Ron Paul authors more bills than the average representative, such as those that impose term limits. He also proposed legislation to decrease Congressional pay. He returns a portion of his salary to the treasury every year too and contributes 97% into his pension plan. Vote Ron Paul 2012
@ThunderPigRemixes I see your point of view but until one is working in totally corrupt system and your constituent asks you to put in an earmark for them but understands that on principle that you vote against it, what would you do especially if it allows them to get back some of the money they paid into the system in taxes? It is a compromise given the system but it doesn't make him a hypocrite.
@ThunderPigRemixes 1. If there are no term limits, he is playing by the same rules as the others. 2. The earmarks allow for transparency and proper allocation of those funds, which are payed into the system by taxpayers in his district. It is a compromise with the established system, which he opposes. If he had his way, the federal government wouldn't have taken that money from his district in the first place.
3. Ron Paul is NOT a hypocrite. Think for yourself (along with facts).
@ThunderPigRemixes --Earmarks are complicated, but as I understand it money is set aside to spend. States vie for that money. If money isn't spent, then Obama gets to spend it any way he wishes. Dr. Paul is just trying to prevent him from getting a "blank check. I agree with Dr. Paul on that! Congress should spend money, not the President.

@craigles1968 You missed the point also. He opposes the system, but the system is what he has to work within. It is called compromise. He does not like that people in his district get federal money to build in the flood zones, but it is a fact. He fights it.
it is obvious that RP dislikes the spending but has to play within the system or his district would have to continue paying taxes but get left out of any 'benefits'.. anyone that doesn't understand that must be LD.
This guy is a living, walking image of Founding Fathers; individual liberty, small government & free market are the ideals that they stood for & today, you get called a "quack" for standing up for ideals & now, we're turning to communism, socialism & corporatism with FALSE belief that govt can "take care of us"
I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them
@jglickma I can tell you don't grasp what Dr. Paul was saying.. Its essentially that blocking earmarks for his district would be like blocking social security payments for his district. Big govt programs like that are woven into the fabric of our current society. Even though those system are flawed and broken.. He has a responsibility to his constituents while working to change the system.
I was really happy when this piece of shit died......for one reason........he never did this ambush crap once.....NOT ONE TIME.....to a Liberal. He was a prick...good riddance.
Essentially everything in the federal budget is an earmark. Not earmarking things for your district wouldn't save any money (usually) because it would just go to someone elses.
I strongly support term limits on all congressman. I would support extending their term to 6 years and imposing one term on them. When a politician can run for re-election, that is what they will make policy towards. That is corrupt and it hurts us.
I'm always amazed that the media can take the great words and deeds of Ron paul and just to make ratings and appease the big lobbies for the 2 party system, they slam him without regard to how great his position is on making this country great again.
Pundits are like mud-slinging children. No point to make, just trying to slander.
Eliminating earmarks doesn't reduce spending. It just means that the money that would have been earmarked goes to the Executive branch to do with as they see fit, usually spend abroad building bridges in Iraq rather than being spent on our own people.
"Remember, earmarks do not constitute new spending, but rather allocation of present spending. Attacking them is a trick by neocons and other advocates of dictatorship to seem anti-spending, when they only want all decisions made by the president. This is an attempt to further weaken congress, constitutionally the senior branch of government, which already has about as much power as the Roman senate in the days of Caligula."
If all earmarks were eliminated we would not necessarily save a single penny in the federal budget. Because earmarks are funded from spending levels that have been determined before a single earmark is agreed to, with or without earmarks the spending levels remain the same. Eliminating earmarks designated by Members of Congress would simply transfer the funding decision process to federal bureaucrats rather then elected representatives.
'Earmark' is unconsitutional, from the research I've done, that's why Ron Paul voted against it. I actually didn't know what 'earmarking' is, until this interview. And Yes, I was disturbed by it and why Ron Paul did what he did.
So I did some researching and the things I found!! Ron Paul is really opening my eyes and educating me on our Government and policy!
If he'll do that for his district he will definitely do that for us as a Nation! I LOVE Ron Paul! Do your research!
A brilliant way of using a corrupt system to help tax payers. What is he supposed to do Tim, allow them to get soaked? He wants to reduce the size of a bloated government which will ultimately help eliminate the corrupt tax system.
Ron Paul did not do well on this show. But the most telling thing about the whole program was...
The Boeing commercial following the interview.
Someone who advocates such a drastic cut in military spending will never truly be accepted by our media. I guess we're lucky that our system still allows for Ron to get his message out, but don't expect to find equitable treatment.
Russert always grills his guests. I've never seen it from start to finish like he did today though.
it's silly these people keep saying earmarks are the problem....the budget for the bills are already there! and he is trying to return money to his district that was taken to them through corrupt taxation! not very cool mr russert!
Dear Mr Russert, I've been watching Meet the Press for a long time. After viewing the December 23 episode, I have become concerned. Your pointed questions to the congressman from Texas and your interuptions during his answers seemed quite transparent to me that you were trying to sway public opinion. You never treated the other candidates in this way, and Ron Paul seemed very honest to me.
I want Dr. Paul to represent me.

Ron Paul ran on the fact that he voted against those earmarks, he left out the fact that he put the earmarks in.

Ron Paul is one of the biggest hypocrites in Congress.
He claims he is against earmarks, yet puts them in spending bills that he knows will pass without his vote, and then proceeds to vote against them.
He says he is for term limits, yet has served in the US House since 1979.
When are you people going to realize that Ron Paul is a hypocrite and has no principals, other than playing his clueless followers for fools?

Good quote from Lew Rockwell on earmarks:
"Remember, earmarks do not constitute new spending, but rather allocation of present spending. Attacking them is a trick by neocons and other advocates of dictatorship to seem anti-spending, when they only want all decisions made by the president. This is an attempt to further weaken congress, constitutionally the senior branch of government, which already has about as much power as the Roman senate in the days of Caligula."
