Use Straight regular bleach (no scents or additives) for water purification and disinfecting. Please note that liquid bleach does lose ~15% of it's strength per year so mark with date & stock rotation is important. Standard dose is 16 drops bleach per gallon of water to purify. Shake and let set 30 minutes, aerate to improve taste.
If the bleach is 4 years old you would just double that dose and you're good.
Tape a medicine eye dropper to bottle so it's ready when needed.

Thanks for showing this basic need topic Larry.
Good drinking water will be Priceless in the extended emergency.
Much too valuable to use flushing a toilet, even with "just" rainwater, which could be purified to drink, that's a Luxury!
I believe those detergent barrels could be Thoroughly washed and rinsed out for potable use. Check chem safety and solubility.
May I suggest digging a Pit Privy, it can be hidden inside the back corner of a tool shed if one lives in a home in the "city".
