@nutnfancy i was just wondering if it was for supporting the fight against breast cancer or something. i sure like the look of it though i would prefer red or blue.
Once on my way home. I was riding my bike and snap! One of the straps on my back pack had jamed between the chain and the gear wheel. And i live a LONG way from school. thats why i use my bike. Anyway i was lucky to have my multi tool. I cut of the strap and feeded it out from the gear & chain. If i had not have it, i was going to lift my bike all the way home. Sorry for my bad english. :D
@CutleryNovice Hiya CN. Nutn says that he likes them ok, but that he likes the Leatherman better...like the Blast, and its about the same price. He says that he doesn't like the short saw, wharncliffe chisel ground blade, however the price IS good at $25. Great to hear from you and hope that helps. -- Veri
I bought this knife and loved it but once I took it apart to thoroughly clean it I could not get it back together. Can anyone help me? I have all the parts still and they all work.
Gerber has been failing me a lot lately and this is just another one to add to the list. If you aren't careful the pliers can pop the slip-joint inside and be rendered useless as there is no longer a stable platform for use. I also know three other people that have had the same issue. Might be worth spending an extra $5 and grabbing a Leatherman Juice.
also, the chisel cut on the leatherman is ideal for those who always use and never sharpen their blade. it is also possible to apply the blade to whatever you are cutting and strike the back of the blade with a hammer. durability is key in multi-tools and they are not meant to be delicate manicure tools. i swear by gerber. (got the para-climber)
@jccrick123 there are no mini multitools like this one or the leatherman juice, because that's not effective. For a saw you need a full size like the leatherman wave (I have one myself, very good saw) or leatherman TTI, there are other brands but leathermans are the best in my oppinion
I was wondering if you could do a review on the Leatherman Surge, i had found it 2 years ao, cleaned it up, and loved it since. I had also found a Nylon gerber belt pouch, what a coincidence.
hey, i was wondering if you could do a review on the Leatherman: Clutch multitool, i had found it outside once, and loved it ever since. i was just wonderin from a pros point of view of knife reviews the ups&downs of the knife
The only thing I dislike about it is I need a multi-tool to open up my multi-tool! So hard to get the screwdrivers open. I've destroyed my thumbnails doing so. Any advice on that? Hope it breaks in maybe..
my leatherman Juice S2 was confiscated by the police when I was tightening the kingpin on my loaded longboard.
I just don't get that ?! I'm not a criminal or some thug !
and leatherman Juice S2 is not a weapon, its a multi tool (I got that from my GF on by birthday) I was explaining to those police officers that I'm carrying that in my bag when I'm taking my longboard with me, just in case that i have to adjust trucks.. but they took it any way, that makes me very angry !
My first multi tool... I think it's pretty good. It's sturdy and compact.. Altough i'd use heavier stuff in the field, i think im gonna put this in my EDC bag or something.
I have one of these and I can flick out most of the tools with one thumb, but the tweezers suck but the blade isn't bad, I tried to use the little flat screw driver to puncture some cans and it worked at first but then the thing that prevents it from going back cracked and fell off after a few, the pliers serve their purpose well and it carries very well
Didn't read all comments, but just FYI: The "Vise" replaced the "Clutch." They might have seen this review, because the addressed some of the negatives you mentioned. They combined the phillips on a 2-sided file blade that is way better than its predecessor. Seperate serrated blade, combined bottle opener with flat head screwdriver. Mini-flathead seems pretty thin. I'm not wild about the outside handle material--an anodized colored metal that has rough edges-needs smoothing. Weight: 2 oz.
Thought I'd mention this. I have owned this tool for a couple of months now and it's been great. This evening, whilst just opening and closing the tools in my hands, the piece of metal that "locks" the small flathead driver broke off. I'm very dissappointed. If you're thinking of getting on of these, don't. Splash out a bit and get a Leatherman.
This is my first multi tool =P. It's great cuz its inexpensive and small and I have used it for things such as getting coins out of shallow drains all the way to fixing the lights onto my bike.
@chjens5 Gerber products are hit and miss! You can either have a decent tool or a junk tool, no in between. I somewhat agree with you. I have have good and bad experiences with Gerber.
Nutn: Are you former military or law-enforcment? You seem quite knowledgeable on your subject matter, and it sounds as if you speak from direct experience. Either way... thanks for your postings.
@nutnfancy I've had a few multitools where the tool extraction was a little tough, i've found if you put a bit of mineral oil in the joints the tool extraction will be alot easier :) Hope that helps
if the clutch doesnt suit your needs becase of the IMO more of everyday mt and you want somethin small tough and more suited for an outdoor role check out the gerber vise it is basically the same but instead of tweesers you get a serrated knife and a regular blade and you still get all of the screw drivers plus a multi function file like the squirt albiet kinda small
I seen one in our local hardware store and tommorrow is my birthday,so my mom bought it for me. I had seen your review and i wanted one so i got one. And im pretty impressed. For a small mt its a good tool to have though even though it is very fragile but what are u expecting, RIGHT lol. And the hardware store is the only place that had one around here so i was happy.
the cap lifter is garbage. It'll work but its a real hassle to open bottles. :) Just a data point, I love this multi tool and have since bought two(I'd buy more but they only had pink in stock, poo!)
Nutnfancy, I bought the Clutch after watching this video, and it's not bad, I carry it around with me. However, you're right, that bottle opener sucks. It works if you're careful with it but it's not fast like a dedicated bottle opener such as those on other multi-tools. Thanks for the vids, keek em coming.
What a sweet toy, i d buy it for my daughters 4th birthday. Its not a Herbertz, its not a Heckler&Koch and its not a Walther, so the steel will fail you in the hour of need and u ll most likely die cutting a piece of paper.
@sigmaree I know...a guy at work whipped one of them out and I about busted a gut laughing and then unleashed my MT from hell...lol....needless to say he borrowed mine.
I went out and bought this a month or so ago. I needed it to grab something i was trying to turn the other day when I had nothing else on me, and the metal that "holds" the plier in place, completely snapped off. It is now essentially useless. Not a bad MT, but those pliers just weren't very good. I'm thinking maybe I don't know...a Juice? maybe even a full size MT on a belt holster.
great review, but i found the clutch to be pretty dangerous to use. the sprung handles snap shut and can easily pinch your skin, and if it bites you towards the end of the hinge it can really hurt you. i nearly lost a big chunk of my thumb tip because of it. also getting the little tools out nearly breaks my fingernail every time. leatherman wins hands down.
I had one problem though... At the spot where the "lock" - actually the spring to help the blade open - is next to the pliers, it jammed...
The "lock" is next to the blade and it pushes my handle to the side, so it doesn't lock when the pliers are open, resulting in the collapse of the pliers when force is applied to it.
This was factory, so I could change it with my guarantee... 4*
I bought the Clutch a month ago, and LOVE IT. Nutn is absolutely right about the still tools. I have found a way to easily remedy the issue. With the pliers open , half-open a specific tool. Notice how the leaf spring (the nested silver liners) in the back of the handle is what puts pressure on the tool as it is deployed? Just bend it slightly up with a mini screwdriver to relieve some of the tension.
I bought one of these recently, it's going back. Just don't really care for the workmanship. The screwdrivers are inferior. Hey, the price was indeed low. It's better than NO multitool if you got nothing else handy! May have to look at that Leatherman squirt. Wish Victorinox made a mini multi tool. Love their workmanship!
Just got a squirt P4. It came dysfunctional and I'm sending it back. There was no nail nick in the large flathead/bottler opener - arguably the most important tool of them all!
Check out Bear and Son Cutlery for a mini multitool I would rank as Victorinox quality. It's called the Mini Bear Jaws Multi Tool.
I enjoyed your review on the Gerber-Clutch, very surprised by the price! I posted a video response on my mystery mini multi-tool. it's about a minute , and does not do it justice. Feels like your holding a full size Leatherman, very tight, solid, scissors spring loaded, razor sharp, saw is awesome, screw driver tips work very well, pliers are very good..
It is a 3 1/2 " long and less than 1/2" wide, very compact. Weak point is the knife blade, just seems to small,1 1/2 " .what do you think
since this knife has a softer steel, you can customize the tools...i turned the micro screwdrier into an AWL, and sharpened the curve on teh nail file to have a rope sort of cutter
If ur cutting stuff then why not just a knife. I have 4 multitools from leathermans juice line up and there all awesome. If u need alot of tools get the XE6 or if u need just a few go with a S2
I have had this knife for two years, and kept it oiled all the time, and it rusted after being in my pocket in rainweather - And Gerber wont do anything about it.
tweezers are not so hot, but the pliers and driver fixed radio antennas on 2 trucks in the same day last summer. Logging roads you know. The wire cutters make short work of guitar strings too.
I want to keep a mini multi tool on my key ring for handyness and an emergency, eg a dog attacking a kid. It has to be legal by the way. What would be the best knife?
I'm not sure of the name of it, I'm looking at it right now and it doesn't have the name of it stamped on it. It is an excellent knife for the price though. I know they sell it by itself at Dicks Sporting Goods if you have one of those near you. If not last time I checked Target still sells them in the combo. I carry this knife with me more then any other knife I own, because of the size/ quality.
I found a Mountain Adventure multi-tool on the street with pliers, 2 knifes, saw, file, flat head, bottle opener, and a Philips head. I bet the person who lost this blade is missing it a lot.
hmm i got mine for 10 worth the 10 imo, though i had mine critically fail. The locking lever/arm for the plier bent inward, and cannot fold completely. Nice blade on it however, and size.
rocked a clutch for about a year, it was quite handy. However, the file is useless, bottle opening takes practice, and the blade retention when deployed falls short. so i had added weight for tools that don't work. maybe i'll try that leatherman
The Clutch seems to work fine for me. I needed a new small pocket tool for college that was no more then 4 inches when open(schools rule). I think it goes like a 10th of an inch over but I don't think anyone will mind.
I have used the pliers on staples and things of that nature and they still work amazingly.
As long as you sharpen the blade you can do some damage to packaging.
The only thing I don't like about it is with its open hole design it gets dust in it that is hard to remove.
depends on your region, I know that in the Canada, at least in Calgary and the Yukon, you can carry anything as long as it is justified. so you you can justify a multi-tool as every day utility, because chances are, the person asking you has run into many situations were they wished for a multi-tool.
I had the Shortcut which is the same multitool as the clutch but with shears instead of pliers - i used it to cut my nails(and a couple cardboard boxes) for a year and then one of the leaf springs for the shears broke rendering it useless. Interesting to see that the spring is cast which I wouldn't have thought would make a long lasting spring.
I've had cheaper tools, which I've used harder, last much longer. These are more expensive in the UK, £20 is cheapest and I wont buy Gerber again.
I have the Gerber clutch that i got with the Evo. It works great for what i use it for but I dont do anything hefty with it though. I tend to use it more while fishing and it works great for that.
I have never been satisfied with any Gerber product I've owned. They all fall apart after some use. Lifetime warranty doesn't mean much when the item isn't worth keeping.
I just picked up the gerber Vise. Its a little different, but is exactly the same size and very similar design. A little more "stylish" I say, although thats not important to me.
Basically, you get a real file, and a saw. The Bottle opener is a better design I feel since it opens up into a dual opener design. I feel that would be easier to open a bottle with, gonna test that out soon.
Check it out! Also has a scissors instead of pliers model like the clutch sister model.
If I'm not mistaken the Gerber Vise has pliers, and the Gerber Splice has scissors. Gerber Shortcut is the scissors version of the Clutch. If I'm wrong, please excuse my ignorance. I prefer the leatherman squirt P4 ,but would like to try the Clutch. How do you like the Vise?
I got the bear grills model with the serrated knife for $16 in california today. It looks pretty cool!!

Love ya NUTN!

the difference is leatherman is twice the price
ivageivage 1 year ago
I bought one of these recently, it's going back. Just don't really care for the workmanship. The screwdrivers are inferior. Hey, the price was indeed low. It's better than NO multitool if you got nothing else handy! May have to look at that Leatherman squirt. Wish Victorinox made a mini multi tool. Love their workmanship!
zhlub4321 1 year ago

Weak point is the knife blade, just seems to small,1 1/2 " .what do you think
xoxoxoxoLIVE 2 years ago
since this knife has a softer steel, you can customize the tools...i turned the micro screwdrier into an AWL, and sharpened the curve on teh nail file to have a rope sort of cutter
arcrobe 2 years ago
yeah this is a nice one,. i customishe the nail file,.thats a bigger skrew driver now.
its great for (car)electronics

u have a tool that you can recommend to a backstage techie, mostly for cutting tie line and hanging lights
vgmax1 2 years ago
maybe try a buck x-tract led???
spiritwolf123456789 2 years ago
If ur cutting stuff then why not just a knife. I have 4 multitools from leathermans juice line up and there all awesome. If u need alot of tools get the XE6 or if u need just a few go with a S2
hulkbuster1026 2 years ago
i think im gonna go with a leatherman crunch because of the vicegrip, it can be used like a wrench
vgmax1 2 years ago
Watever works for u man.
hulkbuster1026 2 years ago
iwould say that a victorinox hiker would do a good job for you

Had this for EDU for about a year now and really enjoy it. Great MT for the money.
Kiwimufasa 2 years ago
I have had this knife for two years, and kept it oiled all the time, and it rusted after being in my pocket in rainweather - And Gerber wont do anything about it.
Apart from that, its great quality!
Swampax 2 years ago
tweezers are not so hot, but the pliers and driver fixed radio antennas on 2 trucks in the same day last summer. Logging roads you know. The wire cutters make short work of guitar strings too.

lol @ "gerber mystery steel." sooo true

I had the compact sport 400 by gerber. The "mystery steel" mysteriously dulled quickly. Lol only forty bucks so can't complain to much.

I want to keep a mini multi tool on my key ring for handyness and an emergency, eg a dog attacking a kid. It has to be legal by the way. What would be the best knife?
effo79 2 years ago
I have this, it came free with a knife I bought, the knife is great, the multi tool is so-so. Not for heavy use.
TheOpenSight 2 years ago
Mine came with a knife too, I lost the knife though and can't remember the name of it! I wish I did, that was a good knife.
MrJwarembourg 2 years ago
I'm not sure of the name of it, I'm looking at it right now and it doesn't have the name of it stamped on it. It is an excellent knife for the price though. I know they sell it by itself at Dicks Sporting Goods if you have one of those near you. If not last time I checked Target still sells them in the combo. I carry this knife with me more then any other knife I own, because of the size/ quality.
TheOpenSight 2 years ago
I found a Mountain Adventure multi-tool on the street with pliers, 2 knifes, saw, file, flat head, bottle opener, and a Philips head. I bet the person who lost this blade is missing it a lot.
Spartiansoldier 2 years ago
hmm i got mine for 10 worth the 10 imo, though i had mine critically fail. The locking lever/arm for the plier bent inward, and cannot fold completely. Nice blade on it however, and size.
gORERubicon 2 years ago
rocked a clutch for about a year, it was quite handy.

XGeneralBeanX 2 years ago
i have one like that that is about 4 incher or smaller

Padla696 2 years ago
do you have to have any license or anything spacial to carry a multi tool around?
do you have to be a specific age?
randysawesome 2 years ago
in this size? most likely not (still, if you are 7 i dont think your parents will be happy to see you with one of those)
kidi1232 2 years ago
depends on your region, I know that in the Canada, at least in Calgary and the Yukon, you can carry anything as long as it is justified. so you you can justify a multi-tool as every day utility, because chances are, the person asking you has run into many situations were they wished for a multi-tool.
MI6CORPORAL 2 years ago
not at all. there are blade length limits for carrying in most states though. you wouldn't want anyone walking around with a machete on their belt.

syrus3k 2 years ago
thanks for the review man, was looking at this knife for camping/pissarseing around purposes, £20, its not much, but it looks worth it
MrWeast1 2 years ago

I tend to use it more while fishing and it works great for that.
masamunekakashi 2 years ago
Yep, Gerber tools fall apart in no time. I dont trust Gerber's name brand.
My clutch broke on the first use!

i got a gerber ripstop its very good. the gerber multi tools look cheap so i dont get them.
superspecialawsome55 2 years ago
I have never been satisfied with any Gerber product I've owned. They all fall apart after some use. Lifetime warranty doesn't mean much when the item isn't worth keeping.
100eyes 2 years ago 2
I just picked up the gerber Vise. Its a little different, but is exactly the same size and very similar design. A little more "stylish" I say, although thats not important to me.
Basically, you get a real file, and a saw. The Bottle opener is a better design I feel since it opens up into a dual opener design. I feel that would be easier to open a bottle with, gonna test that out soon.
Check it out! Also has a scissors instead of pliers model like the clutch sister model.
Koss42 2 years ago
If I'm not mistaken the Gerber Vise has pliers, and the Gerber Splice has scissors. Gerber Shortcut is the scissors version of the Clutch. If I'm wrong, please excuse my ignorance. I prefer the leatherman squirt P4 ,but would like to try the Clutch. How do you like the Vise?
rooster12132 2 years ago
I love it! Been using it daily for a week now. Perfect for its size. All the same strengths that nutnfancy talked about here holds true!
The squirt is really nice! Next on my list to buy would be a juice. For the price of these gerbers you can't go wrong.

I have a Gerber Clutch, and I find that the wire cutters are not very good. I tried to use them to cut my guitar strings and it was a no go.
