One of the best live bands in the mid to eighties. This was shot during their "pre-suck " period. Then they kicked Bobby out and Paul became a serious "Song Writer". Then the "We are boring and suck live" period began.
I checked back on this song and my comment is the last one from a month ago. People should educate themselves each day with a viewing of this video gem. Hey, amg, Bod needed to be kicked out, but he actually left to spend more time with his twenty year old boy in college, LOL, poor guy was older in this video than Green Day is today. Just kidding I know he died at 36yrs of age.
I saw them in Berkeley touring for Tim, they played at the Berkeley Square, the liquor store across the street helped alleviate the college budget hit , and I think Paul and company beat me to the idea. They were so loud and drunk and Chris looked like a teenager with no drivers license. The Pontiac Brothers opened up the crazy show. I also saw them in S.F. the night the Gulf War started, and when they got booed off the stage opening for Tom Petty at the Shoreline/Bill Graham's venue.
Everyone likes to think Paul was the Mats, but Bob proves here, just how great a guitarist he was. The Mats rule anyhow, did I have to tell you that? Awesome clips!!
Damn I miss the Entry, Grain Belts, Tinnitus, and passing out before getting booted out to the curb when it was 7 degrees outside! Long live !st Ave! Love you Steve.
IIRC Twin Tone was video taping at the Entry for 2 or 3 nights on a weekend (possibly Labor Day). I know that they recorded The Hypstrz that weekend too.
I've seen several videos from this show. Has this been/will this be released as a video for jerks like me to purchase??? It was obviously produced for something like that (... multiple cameras, sound recorded separately, etc) which given it's vintage means that someone put some serious time and energy (dollars) into it. Why don't I have this in my collection? Where can I get it? Did Twin/Tone actually sell this back in the day (by which I mean Monday)? Please tell me....
I do believe that they were probably the greatest band in history! One of the world's best kept secrets. Look at them now. Guns and Roses????? As for Paul......I don't know what to say. Urrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhh
This video kicks ass. Shows how great The Replacements really could be. One of the best things to happen in the 80s. They were forever showing the world how it was done... and undone.
This is said to be recorded September 5th 1981. Husker Du played right after. I have a copy of Husker's sets (said to be 3rd generation, pretty good quality) which is awesome too. Now if I could figure out how to transfer it...
Wow! I agree that great songs only started to appear on Hootenany (IMHO), but this is fantastic stuff. Bob sounds great, and Paul is not ambivalent at all.
These 1981 Replacements clips are absolutely mindblowing. The tunes aren't the best songs ever written, but the "potential for greatness" hits you so hard, it's practically blinding. Wow. I only wish *I'd* ever seen Westerberg perform with such emotional commitment. And the production values are surprisingly professional -- I'll have to take a look around the Web, and find the backstory about why a band barely off the ground warranted such a polished, multiple-camera shoot.
I wonder who has the rights to this video? I'd for sure buy a DVD (bootleg or legit) with the whole show on it if it was available! This is great stuff!!
The most underrated band ever!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't believe how clean cut they look! Later on, they looked like the Cure if they were panhandlers.

As if anyone needed any further proof, this clip just goes to show that the 'Mats are on the (very) short list of bands that matter.

The whole set is available for dl at the Twin Tone site in the Replacements section, also with a bunch of great pics.
They have been available there for a long time. Enjoy.
