two problems I saw, 1st: He lacked confidence. if your going to smash something, don't worry about it breaking(DUH)(NO DOUBLE TAKES, DON"T SWING AND BACK OUT). 2nd: he didn't actually break the guitar. Or at least it was difficult to tell if it was broken. A good way to be thorough, is to smash it until the neck breaks off the body. that way we can all see you have trashed a perfectly good guitar. Good effort though :)

It's pretty simple with a bolted-in neck... smash the guitar sideways and it will hold for a long, long time. Maybe the body will come to bits, but the part that joins the neck will stay bolted in.

If you hit it with the body facing up, you'll break it in one hit.

i tried this with a Strat copy at a show. didn't work out so well (i was holding it by the body). my buddy got all worked up, and ended up obliterating his Les Paul (real deal, not an Epi). the Strat copy is sitting here next to me, intact. bits of his Les Paul ended up in my Epiphone, so it wasn't a total loss.
