I have a large degree of empathy with the book; I was undergoing the worst of my disintegration when it came out; I remember seeing it in the mall where I worked, back in 1991-92. At the time, even though I had grappled with depression my whole life, I was reaching that point where the real disintegration was starting; back to back panic attacks, and weeks of nothing but blackness. I also am of the same age as Wurtzel, and had literary aspirations...until the depression hit full force.
hi, if anyone wants to talk to me about their problems or any other things, feel free to msg me. I'll definately listen. I myself suffer from depression and alot of other health problems. I won't say I will understand exactly what you are going through, (cuz everyone is depressed in a diff way, have different problems, lives), and im sure u ve heard enough of 'i understand' when they dont
@3399A well thats rude. have you ever considered the fact that they are actually in pain? that they are hurting? oh and do you also think that someone who cuts themselves and HIDES the scars is trying to "play other people out for attention"?
@Gabriellexoxo17 Let stupid people be stupid people.Don't let them bug you :) and yes, I have been depressed.I have cut myself, and a whole lot of other stuff so I do know what it's like. Some people will never understand because they can't.
You my friend have no clue what depression feel's like, you've never had an experience that would make you that way,and even if you did,OR are depressed you're to stupid enough to not realize it.
@3399A To be honest, I think you might be one of the most depressed people around . Denying your depression and making it seem like you don't understand are your methods of covering it up . You try to hide your emotions by being a jerk . Who knows ? Maybe you're so numb from depression, you don't even have emotions anymore ..
@ishasecret1 Most people dont understand how it works, they think its like cocaine or stuff like that, when it doesnt change you suddenly but slowly takes you out of depression. It helped me a lot, of course it isnt addictive and no one use it forever, it takes just a period of time and then you leave it when you are ready. It has saved lives and worked out where therapy has failed. sorry if it bothers someone, but its true.
I'll need to watch this film, I never heard of it. It was never advertised here in the UK. I now realised that I was depressed when I was around 7 - 8 years old after suffering bereavement from the loss of my grandparents who were like parents to me, then I got bullied at school because I was vulnerable from my personal situation. I felt as no one understood me, not even my parents who thought I was dumb because I didnt perform well at school at the time! but now I understand and overcame it!
This movie is not for everybody. That is one of the reasons this movie was not widely released throughout America. However, if you have read Wurtzel's work or have ever suffered from depression this movie will definitely be resonant with you. There is something about Wurtszel's writing that just speaks the truth, she tells it like it is to the point where you are engrossed with her. Christina Ricci masterfully played her too.
Don't watch this unless you are ready to understand it.
the worst thing about having depression is...well, there's a lot of bad things. for me, it's being laughed at by my entire family, because they think i'm attention seeking or playing on the loss of my grandfather. it's a cliche, but it's absolutely awful when nobody understands how you're feeling.
it is exist in a french language?! i speak french and i don't find this movie in french or just subtile french:'( i watch in english but i don't understand eatch part:(
i used to have depression when i was in highschool... when someone asks me how it feels like i tell him to see ''prozac nation''... amazing performance by christina ricci!
I am thankful to my psychiatrist for helping me get through my depression. IT IS NOT A LOAD OF MUMBO JUMBO. That's what I thought when I walked into her office that day. I thought that what was going on with me was just a part of my personality, but I was seriously wrong. Prozac and therapy helped me overcome a huge obstacle.
For those of you who are being absolutely insulting about antidepressants, I just want to say that I can sense bitterness in your arguments. Antidepressants have helped a lot of people, and just because they didn't work for you or somebody you know does not mean they are not effective for the vast majority of patients with depression.
Prozac and other antidepressants alone will not do the trick though. Talk therapy and a healthy lifestyle is just as important.
@xCrazyKylie08x They've helped me. I think its insane how half the people talk about how they beat depression with shear willpower canabis etc etc. I think those people were just down and not really depressed because ive been so depressed i have 0 will power especially not enough to beat it hell sometimes not enough to get out of bed.
drugs destroy peoples lives. why is it that doctors get away with dealing but somebody on the street doesnt? YOU ARE EVIL..... you so called doctors...you should actually try and help people instead of making things worse by dealing out drugs...your just stupid bean counters who are intelligent enough to pass a university test but have no life intelligence at all. In the end the good will win and pyschiatry wont exist! It just takes time.
Just as alterations in individual biochemistry - for example - developing emphysa - causes emotional malaise. This is because the mind and the body are a unity! While drugs can help in the short term, don't be fooled into thinking you need to stay on drugs - its really just masking the problem. What you need is a revolution in perspective - a lot of the time the depression is trying to tell you something - the key is having the intiative to implement change - external or internal.
i found this trailer while searching for prozac side effects and withdrawal symptoms
i really wanna see it, though im not sure if it actually has much to do with it.
ive been depressed for about 2 years and started taking prozac (which i stupidly thought was st. john's wort) for a year to help me overcome my annorexia.
i havnt taken it for bout 3 days now cold turkey and im just wondering if anyone has any advice on what to expect, i already feel a little different.
i had severe depression at the age of fourteen . i was suicidal and hospitalised but with therapy and prozac i was helped a lot and now i fell i've really learned and grown up from the experience . it helped shape me who i am today , depression makes u much more aware of peoples feelings, i also definitly think it should be treated as a disease and not made fun of . u wouldnt make fun of someone with cancer
@loverofzebras I want to read the book as soon as possible.I saw this movie when I was university student.and I want to know what she was thinking or feeling through the book.
@ExtremeBogom When you were diagnosed with depression etc did you ever consider, and I mean seriously consider, suicide at all? Because if not then you will never know what its like to drag yourself out of those depths of despair...if you did, then of course I apologise and would like to know how it is you managed to get rid of depression? And also, what accompanied your diagnosis - aka symptoms, for example psychomotor retardation, insomnia, neurosis, suicidal ideation etc..
read the book and studying it as well. so good. dont think the movie will be as good because the images i thought of it wont match up to the tv. my best frends sucidely depressed would it make it worse if i gave him the book to read so he doesnt feel alone?
I have suffered from severe depression for years and I found Christina Ricci absolutely mindblowing in this movie! And I'm not someone who is easily impressed. :D
Seriously if you are depressed, DO NOT take meds! Trust me, they'll only make you feel worse!!!
If you really have no choice, better try cannabis first! :D
a lot of people talked crap about this movie. they need to go and read some abnormal psychology books. Major depression is nothing to make fun of. It is a serious mental illness that the person really does not enjoy. This movie is really important and the book is also extremely important. It's a window into the lives of people who suffer of depression to help other become aware. Just like the movie "Beautiful Mind" which speaks of schizophrenia, this movie is AMAZING!
A believed 80,000 people have committed suicide while on Prozac. Oh but of course, its okay to deal because it wasn't the PROZAC that did it, they were unstable to begin with... Bulshit. And more people have died in the hands of Psychiatry globally than all the Americans lost in all the wars combined. And all in the name of "Mental Healing" It would be more sane to execute them in the name of "Mental Healing" You want real mental anguish, trouble and pain see a Psychiatrist.
I'm reading the book now, I haven't seen the movie and I'm not that far into the book, but I like the book a lot. So far I've learned her family on her dad's side had a lot of depression issues which is the reason she's depressed (that's what she thinks). I can't wait to watch the movie after I read the book, although I don't think the trailer captures the true mood of the movie, but I could be wrong.
I was 14 when I was first given prozac 20mg for depression. I took it on and off for 3 months then just never took it again. Im 16 now and glad I stopped taking it.
I read the book before watching this piece of shit movie, so I can say that Ricci's character has borderline personality disorder. She is obviously not depressed in this movie-she is using sex, anger, and bitchiness to convey her fear of imagined abandonment.
Anti-depressants are majorly misused by patients/practitioners in the US. They get you way "up", then slam you down with antipsychotic pills. A big scam.
@gravelandgrain100 I spent a year working with bipolar patients in a clinical research unit, and if Ricci's brilliant performance is true to life, I am convinced that Lizzie was suffering from bipolar affective disorder (which, admittedly, can look a lot like borderline in the manic phase), not major depression. Your point about misuse of SSRIs is all too valid, especially in this patient population, since they can provoke switches and cycling when used alone (a mood stabilizer is first line).
...I am not too sure weed would help? Hope ll goes well, and remember our favorite little mouse from disney was back! I mean, look at how dapsy donald was, how stupid was and looked. Nope, be proud to be represented by disney as a cool little mickey or minney mouse! Good luck with your studies, friend.
america is promised land to drug users.if you dont fit in the beautiful/strong jaw/california tanned/smooth talking mold, youre gonna have to use prozac (or something else shit).and even if you would, you still have to use them.thats sad.
It's bizarre and stunning that we live in a predatory medical culture where instead of telling people to change their miserable depressing lives they tell them to take drugs then they have a "War on Drugs" which is an ABJECT FAILURE as is the DARE program.
They outsource Thousands of American jobs, undermine the middle class, selectively enforce our laws, the real unemployent rate is around 20%, it would be cheaper & less damaging to let people smoke pot and take whatever drugs they like!
Na, she was NOT depressed she's just a spoilt whore all you Wurtzel dick suckers just come out with the same old "you obviously don't know what depression is" crap. I know what depression is, she didn't have it.
i hope the movie's better than the book, the book kinda made her seem really self involved and indulgent. i kinda wanted to slap her and say bitch, harden up you really dont have it that bad. my parent split up when i was young and my father doesnt have anything to with me either, but im not going to cry and go foetal everyday about it.
The woman is nothing but a fucking spoilt arse narcissitic whore who can't keep her cock depository mouth hole shut.
She should have shot herself when she had the chance, save us all hearing her fucking self-obsessed shallow ramblings.
Leave it to people who suffer from REAL depression and isolation, not middle class Ivy League educated Lawyers that seemingly NOTHING is ever good enough for.
i rented this movie thinking it would be another dumb college movie but its actually really good. i want 2 read the book now im really suprised this movie didnt win any awards.
does anyone know the quote when her and jason biggs are in bed and she is running her fingers over his body saying she finally understand what people mean by love and how you want to crawl up inside them just so u can wear there skin as a coat ive looked everywhere ? thankx
Elizabeth got into a harvard university for being an innate braniac since early age. Her home was traumatizing seeing that both her parents were fucked in the head and placed together by the pressure of society of what a woman should do and not do. Like I said, get your shit straight. Elizabeth was not wealthy at all.
I feel that I was simply adding my own experience to the understanding of a complex issue. I have been on medication for almost a year now for major depressive disorder with psychotic features. For many years nobody helped me, neither doctors nor family, all my friends abandoned me, and I spent my days thinking about suicide and fantasizing that I was the son of God. I knew nothing but misery all this time, unlike the pampered wealthy white girl with all the lovers in this film.
This looks like such shit - most people on antidepressants aren't rich, beautiful, successful, privileged white kids at Harvard.
I find it really, really hard to find sympathy for rich, privileged white kids who find that 'life is not worth living' yet at the same time live it up like there's no tomorrow.
Most white females on antidepressants are NOT regularly getting sex either. Put 2 and 2 together on that one ....
Don't talk about stuff you don't know. People that suffer from clinical depression don't want to be that way. Depression knows no social class nor race. it's a mental sickness just like when you get a cold or a fever. I DO know because I am a Clinical Psychology major. Get your facts straight. People that suffer from clinical depression or any other mental illness need help and treatment just like any other physical sickness.
I disagree with you there. I was told those things by a psychiatrist when I was just 14, but I no longer suffer from "depression", "ocd", "anxiety" because I saw things differently.
I got smart, read alot of books, learnt about the brain, and effectively eliminated "depression".
I had brief psychosis for 2 months, but out of sheer willpower got out of it, and off the drugs before they got me...
I hopewe see the elimination of those disorder terms.
@ExtremeBogom I HIGHLY disagree with you. I've had clinical depression, started cutting at 11 & the first time I tried to kill myself, I was 12. When I was 20 I overdosed on 125mg of ambien cr & who knows how many tabs.
I couldn't help or control myself. I am finally turning my life around. I am now on prozac instead of everything else i've taken over the years.
@KakashiHatake212 fuck that dude, anti depressants fuck your shit up more.. MY mother is a perfect example.. Depression is serious but throwing anti depressant at it is NOT the answer.. Doctors also get paid for prescribing drugs as you know of course..
This stuff is poison. I have witnessed it first hand with my wife. It has nearly destroyed our lives and very nearly killed her. My GP told me 1 in 10 of her patients are on this stuff....its an epedemic. Why has mental illness more suicide attempts and worse long term outcomes since ssri's were intoruduced? No one is saying that depression isnt real, just that this stuff is part of the problem, not the solution. Ia clinical psychology major should know that. Stooge!
@KakashiHatake212 Why don't you just try not throwing your "Clinical Psychology Major" at everyone around here. :) As you can see, some of the people contributing to this comment section have made various own experiences with depression and psychological conditions of the like themselves.
@KakashiHatake212 Of course you would say that. You'd be out of a job if people decided to just get over their issues themselves. As a bipolar I went through years of therapy and countless medications and nothing worked until I decided to change my life. I went cold turkey and started making myself develop good habits. It was hard but now I'm back in school and try to motivate others to do the same. I openly disagree with Clinical Psychologist and Psychiatrist, because they don't work.
@KakashiHatake212 oh, how ignorance is bliss, eh? the people that think (my bitch of a mother, as well) depression is 'for attention' or blah fuckin' blah are serious idiots.
@thisferalhybrid how right! But the saddest thing that are more serious idiots than people who understand are there for you when you need.Everyone tells me that my parents should have beaten me and I wouldn't suffer from depression and self harm...
@KakashiHatake212 but u can physically see the problem of a cold or fever by the cells inside the body, you can literally see whats going wrong. With the human mind you cannot go inside and see it.
Psychiatry is one of the most corrupt things in the world as many people who have deep ties with pharmaceutical companies have deep ties with psychiatric philosophy, its all just business. Do they mention the extreme long term side effects? like emotionlessness, suicidal thoughts, dementia etc? no.
No one is being racist, I said that Depression doesn't go by race or by social class, it attacks everyone, black, white, hispanic, asian, etc. Paranoid much.
I still don't want to see it, maybe there is something about this movie that triggers me personally, but I find it hard to sympathize with someone who leads such a party lifestyle turning to pharms ... I mean how many 'bipolar' people, especially celebrities, are really drug addicts whose brains have been addled by endless stimulant abuse and drug- and booze-fuelled sex romps?
I mean, I am depressed - and nothing like any of these glamorous people.
a lot of people who are depressed. use drugs and alchohol to numb the pain. which then causes them to get involved in sex and the party scene. I used to use sex myself. Don't you think prostitutes are depressed? it doesn't matter what class you are. depression doesn't follow only the less fortunate.
I'm on chapter 13 of the book and this movie doesn't look much like it, unless most of this trailer takes place after chapter 13... there are 14 chapters with an epilogue and an after word.

Your point about misuse of SSRIs is all too valid, especially in this patient population, since they can provoke switches and cycling when used alone (a mood stabilizer is first line).

I'm black, going to community college, and taking Prozac for social anxiety and depression.
They'd rather have all white characters than try to be like Disney, which tries to please everyone by trying to be politically correct lately.
Weed is almost legalized in California and I'd take it medically if it didn't stink so bad and if I had to take it only once in the morning.
guerrald 2 years ago
...I am not too sure weed would help?

J20M07, shut up. have you read the book? its obviously a serious matter and she was legitamately depressed so no need to be a dick about it dude
michellexxrose 2 years ago 3
Na, she was NOT depressed she's just a spoilt whore all you Wurtzel dick suckers just come out with the same old "you obviously don't know what depression is" crap. I know what depression is, she didn't have it.

i have no idea of how she is. and i haven't read her book or know any shit about her.
... but ur most probably right =)

i hope the movie's better than the book, the book kinda made her seem really self involved and indulgent. i kinda wanted to slap her and say bitch, harden up you really dont have it that bad. my parent split up when i was young and my father doesnt have anything to with me either, but im not going to cry and go foetal everyday about it.

She sickens me, the Emo C*NT!

And by the way, she also thought 9/11 was "art" and that people "overreacted" to the event.

Sorry, she just annoys me. Of course many prostitutes are depressed - but they do it because they have to, not because of their depression.
To watch a real movie concerning depression and social isolation, watch Monster- also stars Christina Ricci. That's a brilliant film.

she doesn't fit into her life, and that's why she's depressed.

Elizabeth got into a harvard university for being an innate braniac since early age. Her home was traumatizing seeing that both her parents were fucked in the head and placed together by the pressure of society of what a woman should do and not do. Like I said, get your shit straight. Elizabeth was not wealthy at all.

silentsoliloquy82 2 years ago
I feel that I was simply adding my own experience to the understanding of a complex issue. I have been on medication for almost a year now for major depressive disorder with psychotic features. For many years nobody helped me, neither doctors nor family, all my friends abandoned me, and I spent my days thinking about suicide and fantasizing that I was the son of God. I knew nothing but misery all this time, unlike the pampered wealthy white girl with all the lovers in this film.
illegalsmirf 2 years ago
This looks like such shit - most people on antidepressants aren't rich, beautiful, successful, privileged white kids at Harvard.
I find it really, really hard to find sympathy for rich, privileged white kids who find that 'life is not worth living' yet at the same time live it up like there's no tomorrow.
Most white females on antidepressants are NOT regularly getting sex either. Put 2 and 2 together on that one ....
illegalsmirf 2 years ago
Don't talk about stuff you don't know. People that suffer from clinical depression don't want to be that way. Depression knows no social class nor race. it's a mental sickness just like when you get a cold or a fever. I DO know because I am a Clinical Psychology major. Get your facts straight. People that suffer from clinical depression or any other mental illness need help and treatment just like any other physical sickness.
KakashiHatake212 2 years ago 119

silentsoliloquy82 2 years ago
@KakashiHatake212
They do more harm than good.
ExtremeBogom 1 year ago
@ExtremeBogom i'm sorry what? you claim had "ocd" for 2 months? lol'd.
WednezdayAddamz 1 year ago 6
@ExtremeBogom I HIGHLY disagree with you. I've had clinical depression, started cutting at 11 & the first time I tried to kill myself, I was 12. When I was 20 I overdosed on 125mg of ambien cr & who knows how many tabs.
I couldn't help or control myself. I am finally turning my life around. I am now on prozac instead of everything else i've taken over the years.

@KakashiHatake212
Stooge!
neilares36 1 year ago
@KakashiHatake212 Why don't you just try not throwing your "Clinical Psychology Major" at everyone around here. :) As you can see, some of the people contributing to this comment section have made various own experiences with depression and psychological conditions of the like themselves.
TheTinkle 11 months ago
@KakashiHatake212 Of course you would say that. You'd be out of a job if people decided to just get over their issues themselves. As a bipolar I went through years of therapy and countless medications and nothing worked until I decided to change my life. I went cold turkey and started making myself develop good habits. It was hard but now I'm back in school and try to motivate others to do the same. I openly disagree with Clinical Psychologist and Psychiatrist, because they don't work.
KBadtower 10 months ago
@KakashiHatake212 oh, how ignorance is bliss, eh? the people that think (my bitch of a mother, as well) depression is 'for attention' or blah fuckin' blah are serious idiots.
thisferalhybrid 10 months ago 4
@thisferalhybrid how right! But the saddest thing that are more serious idiots than people who understand are there for you when you need.Everyone tells me that my parents should have beaten me and I wouldn't suffer from depression and self harm...
AntiAnetteOlzon 10 months ago
@KakashiHatake212 but u can physically see the problem of a cold or fever by the cells inside the body, you can literally see whats going wrong. With the human mind you cannot go inside and see it.
Psychiatry is one of the most corrupt things in the world as many people who have deep ties with pharmaceutical companies have deep ties with psychiatric philosophy, its all just business. Do they mention the extreme long term side effects? like emotionlessness, suicidal thoughts, dementia etc? no.
