 I have a large degree of empathy with the book; I was undergoing the worst of my disintegration when it came out; I remember seeing it in the mall where I worked, back in 1991-92. At the time, even though I had grappled with depression my whole life, I was reaching that point where the real disintegration was starting; back to back panic attacks, and weeks of nothing but blackness. I also am of the same age as Wurtzel, and had literary aspirations...until the depression hit full force.

I'll need to watch this film, I never heard of it. It was never advertised here in the UK. I now realised that I was depressed when I was around 7 - 8 years old after suffering bereavement from the loss of my grandparents who were like parents to me, then I got bullied at school because I was vulnerable from my personal situation. I felt as no one understood me, not even my parents who thought I was dumb because I didnt perform well at school at the time! but now I understand and overcame it!

This movie is not for everybody. That is one of the reasons this movie was not widely released throughout America. However, if you have read Wurtzel's work or have ever suffered from depression this movie will definitely be resonant with you. There is something about Wurtszel's writing that just speaks the truth, she tells it like it is to the point where you are engrossed with her. Christina Ricci masterfully played her too.

For those of you who are being absolutely insulting about antidepressants, I just want to say that I can sense bitterness in your arguments. Antidepressants have helped a lot of people, and just because they didn't work for you or somebody you know does not mean they are not effective for the vast majority of patients with depression.

Prozac and other antidepressants alone will not do the trick though. Talk therapy and a healthy lifestyle is just as important.

I read the book before watching this piece of shit movie, so I can say that Ricci's character has borderline personality disorder. She is obviously not depressed in this movie-she is using sex, anger, and bitchiness to convey her fear of imagined abandonment.

Your point about misuse of SSRIs is all too valid, especially in this patient population, since they can provoke switches and cycling when used alone (a mood stabilizer is first line).

I disagree with you there. I was told those things by a psychiatrist when I was just 14, but I no longer suffer from "depression", "ocd", "anxiety" because I saw things differently.

I got smart, read alot of books, learnt about the brain, and effectively eliminated "depression".

I had brief psychosis for 2 months, but out of sheer willpower got out of it, and off the drugs before they got me...

I hopewe see the elimination of those disorder terms.
