@TheMarkster1957 Yes, Blanche stews in her jealousy and rage while Jane gets all the praise and glory, however the tables are turned as Blanche grows up to be a successful movie actress, while Jane is forgotten.
So many films from that era didnt adjust to appropriate costuming for the era portrayed...greatfully this one does. the Bette Davis film..Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte didnt...in the scenes from the 1920's..the actors had very 1960's hairdos/cuts...
I live in Boise, Idaho and Julie Alkred, the child actress who played young Baby Jane in this clip, is married to former Boise mayor Brent Coles. Interestingly enough, Joan Crawford's adopted daughter Christina, also lives here in Idaho.
Many thanks for posting this. "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane" is a great Bette Davis classic. The "campy" style of singing was the trend of those days. It was vaudeville for cryin' out loud! It was usually "over acted". As for "lip synching", you may be right. But she is probably the singer nevertheless. In those days they didn't have wireless microphones. I'll bet you didn't know that My Fair Lady was lip-synched too! Rent Baby Jane--it's great!
the little girl wasnt really singing, she was lip singing according to the production notes!!!!! the singing was made to sound that way to give the audience an ora of not liking baby jane.
she sounds like sandpaper. and Im assuming she was a big star because its a rather unusual voice for a child. but to comment on the mother standing in the background, she looks like somebody turned off her brain and took away emotion and expression. horrible face. horrible.
@WolfieMcMuffin Actually, Julie Allred's singing was done by Debbie Burton.
BTW, I noticed the boy handing Julie the Baby Jane doll, I think, is Ralph Hart. Later on in the year 1962, when this film was made, he played Sherman Bagley, the son of Vivian Bagley (Vivian Vance) from 1962-65 on "The Lucy Show" with Lucille Ball as Lucy Carmichael, Candy Moore as daughter Christine "Chris" Carmichael, and Jimmy Garrett as Jerry Carmichael. Let me know if I'm correct.
@MrJayBBluejay You are 1OO% correct, the young actor who hands her the doll on stage was indeed the same the same boy that played Viv's son in those early episodes of THE LUCY SHOW. And yes, vocalist Debbie Burton did the singing here for Julie Allred. There was even a record out called "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" featuring her voice with Bette Davis.
i want to drown that child!!!

I hope those aren't talking dolls. If I heard that voice coming out of that doll, I'd tie it up and lock it in the closet.

@suckittomcat yes, the acting was "overacting", it was carried into the silent films, and some of the first "talkies"...then acting soon changed.
