Allen Toussaint opened his New Year's Eve 1986 set at the Oasis club in San Francisco with this song. The late great Steve Douglas on sax. Yeah, they tore it up.
This was thge first song I ever saw on tl in the jungle of Zaire but then there where poeple (afro-americans) playing piano and singing, anyway thanx for postin'!Lov'it
As much as I dislike covers of songs(and movie remakes) I must admit ol Johnny remained faithful to the original in this case. Both have strong artistic merits! Huey's "Don't You Just Know It" is a participation classic.
Hey Piano Players! Will sombody post a video of the Johnny Rivers version on playing "Rocking Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu on piano!! Thanks for the video!
Huey "piano" Smith and the Clowns had R&B down pat and introduced this beat into the Rock&Roll era calling it Boogie Woogie, whatever it was, it got you up to dance. Huey and his group had some hit records but they were one of the most requested back-up groups in the music industry. Huey had a mid-size tri-cycle that had a piano mounted on it and he would ride it onto the stage. They were truely entertaining and talented. Pure Rhythm! Ron--Highway Stars Magazine
man...this guy is great ! had the pleasure of meeting him in person when i was a boy in Wilmington , NC. Shot pool with him as he was passing thru my home city . Will never forget him...Great guy...& he liked kids...cause he took the time out to play with me . R. L. Jackson...
This Sound is Timeless. The Classic Sound of the great Rockers. Hard to belive they didn't have a name for it yet. This is Rock Music at its Bare Raw Bones.
ROCK&ROLL came from guys like this,,not ELVIS. I liked ELVIS but he wasn't THE KING even he knew it. If not for WYNOONIE HARRIS there probably wouldn't be an ELVIS
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 Haha, that was funny. The thing is of course that W Harris 'took' or was inspired from other and earlier artist et cetera and all the way back to...I don't know when.lol Music is a heritage and not shaped in a vacuum. Of course El was damn more dynamic that Wyonie and I really like W. It's not about that.
@THEMOJOMANsince1959 How did he not know? How was he not the King? I agree from these people Rock n roll was inspired they certianly are brilliant. But I would agree on the fact Elvis isnt the KiNG.
"GERALDO" RIVERS should've used his real name. The ORIGINALS are dying off
BO DIDDLEY,,JAMES,,WILSON,,,I hate to say this but probably BERRY a few years down the road. I was "on the air" in 1958 playing all that stuff. THEMOJOMANdotCOM
The flip side of this was the song in instrumental and was a great "slop" tune for dancing. The New Orleans sound of ACE Records was fantastic- many great artists and songs
Songs are just cooler when you've only ever heard a remake then all of the sudden you hear the original that really has that original sound and a good beat!
@oldies55 Yep NOTHING BEATS "THE ORIGINAL" I've never understood how someone can copy almost exactly someone else's stuff and feel proud of it. Even if they'd just mention the other person or record. I never had any respect for THE DIAMONDS 'UNTIL" they did one of the PBS oldies shows and ACTUALLY had MAURICE WILLIAMS on stage and singing with them doing LITTLE DARLIN' which Williams originated with his group THE GLADIOLAS.
Piano work is really good on both....me thinks the sax is stronger on the Rivers version though. Driving my wife nuts listening to both of them again and again....Long live the New Orleans backbeat sound.

Just looked Smith up on Wikipedia & found out what he did after he retired. Cool!

This is Part 1, on the flip side there is a instrumental version. This record reflects the New Orleans sounds of the times, which featured pianos.
Great sound!!

Huey Smith's version slightly more New Orleans type with rhythm & horns, bouncy beat great for "dirty dances".....

This sounds very similar to Johnny Rivers' famous cover version, though Johnny's version is about a minute and a half longer.
