I finished reading the book 2day nd i loved the ending (which took me a while 2understand) nd i cant wait 2 c the movie but......the only question that i have left is y did Tyler/the main character know all these facts nd all that science stuff?? Its awsome!!
brad Pitt was an alterego created by Edward Norton. Shooting at his throat Norton convince himself that he was shooting at Tyler throat... maybe it's easier think that tyler Durden was insane
No. In the book he was but not in the movie. Look again at the hotel scene when Jack finds out about his alter ego Tyler Durden. Jack tells tyler he's crazy or something like that. Tyler tells him,"No millions of people talk to themselves everyday, but you have the courage to just run with it."
I'm not ashamed to admit it's this very scene that got me into homoerotic sadomasochism. I loved the movie in a thousand other ways, but that's a big one.
And homoeroticism making us uncomfortable? =o I can tell you that there's a large, large fanbase that's lapping it up.
This scene has nothing to do with homoerotic whatever. You missed the point....Just like those who think this movie is about fighting.Dig deeper please.
Also I've had a burn from Lye, and it really does "hurt more than you've ever been burned." Even though I didn't let it stay on my hand nearly as long I do have a faint little pockmark from where it was before I ran and found acetic acid to put on it.
More like a neo-luddite anarchist. Tyler feeds on nihilism, which he believes is the result of living the american corporate dream - when you realize that you won't, ever, be a movie star nor rich or famous. Tyler gathers nihilists and gives them a purpose.
besides the fight scenes this is the best scene of the movie it hasthe most powerful dialouge Tyler is almost a genious "If our fathers are models for god and our fathers fail what does that tell you about god . . . " love that quote
brad pitt should play the joker in the next batman movie, i remember watching dark knight at midnight and thinking, heath ledger is just doing tyler, with a high pitched voice
I put This on my hand..lmao (Y) In Sciece today,, (Y) But it was in Liquid form..Sodium Hydroxide? i think it was.. was nasty :P i got the rest of the day off to go to the hospital though!!! :P
Before i get negati\/e comments saying im an ass... Im not proud of it.. lol
For those who don't understand the reason why he kisses his hand: Lye (Caustic soda) is harmless until it touches water, after which a chemical reaction kicks in (And its a nasty one!). If he had not kissed or licked the back of his hand before pouring the lye on it, nothing would have happened.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Meh. Movie was okay, but it followed the book verbatim. There were absolutely no creative liberties taken, nothing was changed. That's the only thing I can criticize about the movie itself; I thought Norton was superb.
I know the endings were entirely different... and I don't know why you said "assuming you ever actually read the book." Isn't it pretty obvious that I did, considering I can tell how close the movie is to the novel?
I have no problem with movies that stay faithful to the source, but IMO, it's pointless to make a movie of a novel if you're just going to copy the novel into script form and film it. If I don't like it, fine; it's a subjective matter, so how about we not argue over it, hmm?
Considering you forgot to take into account the changes made to the ending, when asserting that "no creative liberties [were] taken", no, it isn't especially obvious you read the book.
My first remark was merely a comment on your opinions, not a judgment, nobody is arguing. However the comment immediately afterward IS a judgment that you need to think before trying to make definitive statements on something.
The ending wasn't specifically changed, just added to - embellished to add a more definite and clever close to the film. It worked for the movie, but it's still just one change - and not a very big one - tacked onto a script that was practically copied directly from the novel. Even with the different ending, they're far too close to each other for my taste.
When I first watched Fight Club, when Tyler kissed The Narraror's hand, I thought he was coming on to him. Lol. I love the gay undertones in this movie.
Both the novel and the film use the homoerotic undertones to make the audience/reader uncomfortable "to keep them from thinking too hard and actually surprising them with the twist."
I had to read the book for my college english class-I actually enjoyed it, and i enjoyed the movie too. I love this part, especially what Tyler says about God...could be why I'm athiest since my dad bailed too
he also says "All great periods of culture have been periods of political decline. The energy required for politics on a large scale or in economy or in universal commerce or in parlimentarism or in military interest usually reduces the level of culture of a people." which is exactly what tyler tried to do by blowing up the credit bulidings
i hate when ppl always say yea "its just a movie." It is acctually based on a philosophy which is proposed by nietzche. he states "We moderns have no culture to call our own we fill ourselves with foreign customs arts philosophies religions and sciences. We are wandering encyclopedias. The point is to assimilate the past to use it in the making of our own life and culture. History is a dead weight on the present"
well, the basis of the movie is seeking fullfilment in this life, through giving it up. but it is still fulfillment of the flesh nonetheless. the path of serving christ goes beyond what limitations our bodies have. its our soul that matters.
all i said was dont just call this a movie and write it off as meaningless. I dunno wtf rant your goin on about, but way to totally miss the point of what i said.
In actual God desires to have a relationship with Him but sin seperates us from Him and if we turn to Jesus and accept Him as a Savior then we are no longer have seperation and God looks at us through His Son. Romans 5:1
I do like this movie too..great actors but a movie nontheless
God and sin have nothing to do with it, it's humanity progressing forward in it's meaningless path to search for it's purpose without risk, reason for determination, or pain. Hence why Tyler gave him the burn in the first place, to reassure him.
If God has nothing to do with it then why mention Him? Obviously the narrator is searching for God and redemption but Tyler is his own demon hes fighting..fear
and musicsoul39 who cares if it was only just a movie, which it is in fact not. the bible is full of stories that supposedly have huge philisophical, spiritual and moral meaning. so just becuas this story is presented as a movie its not valid? well then why cant i say the story of creation is cool but a story nonetheless
Well isnt that the point of movies or art? To critique it in your own form and find meaning for a purpose to grow from it and learn from it? TO bring the art to life in your OWN perspective if its Christianity, philosophy or morality? Thats why its called art. How I have taken from this movie is going to not be the same as you and thats what makes art so beautiful. I see Tyler as Jacks own demon and he saves himself by destroying something he created from his own fear.
acctually its if our fathers "BAILED" not failed as the narrator said earlier that his father left him when he was young and seeing that tyler and the narrator are th same person he says our fathers. Plus it makes more sens with the whole we our gods unwanted children
our fathers were our models for God. if our fathers failed, what does that tell you about God? Listen to me! you have to consider the fact that God does not like you. He never wanted you. In all probability he HATES you. This is not the worst thing that can happen... WE DON'T NEED HIM. Fuck damnation man, fuck redemption. We are God's unwanted children? SO BE IT!
Haha, I LOVE this part.. i memorized most of it.
"its only after we've lost everything, that we're free to do anything"
In the forward to the book, Chuck Palahniuk says that people started doing this to themselves! This movie is like militant Buddhism lol. If you haven't read the book it is worth it. The movie is better than the book over all, but the ending in the book is way better than the ending to the movie. :)

Who's Jack? I don't know anything about the book but, in the movie, the narrator's name is never told.
messofilho 2 years ago
Well in the movie script they had "the narrator" as Jack.
Because of the narrators use of saying, "I'm Jack's smirking revenge." Its like his third person.
Sounds confusing I know.

It sure does. NaOH can easily destroy protein and turns fat into soap. The slime from NaOH is soap made from -you-.

Your gripe is that for once a movie actually stayed relatively faithful to the source material?
You may also have noticed, assuming you ever actually read the book, that the endings were entirely different. Just saying.
