I don't get the big cool factor...I crossed 4.5 feet of water in my Nissan Pathfinder @ Silver Lake Dunes in Mears Michigan yesterday, just let it dry out for 10 minutes, dropped in a new air filter, and drove the 147 miles home. Unless its over your hood, don't bother posting!
um, yes it was....I can't say for sure how much water got INTO the engine, but that filter was soaked through and through....
I should add, that perhaps I was able to flush out the water because I have a ticking manifold on either side, which would expel the water as if I removed the spark plugs as most people would do in the event of getting water in the engine.
Pathy still runs fine today, and now sits on 33x1250's. It was stock back then.
@KSIFLYBOY No, you were just EXTREMELY LUCKY you didn't suck any water into the engine. If you had, you would have been able to shake hands with a conrod, as this oftens happens when a spinning engine suddenly stops because a piston can't compress the water...
Either fit a raised air intake(snorkel) , learn how to create a bow wave, or don't gamble with your engine again. Then again, it's your wallet:)
@koitorob the long story; I crossed the path the day before with an entire group, it was maybe a few inches up my doors, nothin to worry bout. The next day I went through it again, and it had been dug up by somebody, so I unexpectedly plunged in. I don't have 400 bucks for a snorkle, and because I have done it before (I cross water every time I go out) I'm not worried about hydrolocking the engine. I know what happens when uncompressing water gets into a cylinder. Its not luck, its a pathfinder.
@koitorob oh yes, I forgot to add. I have found paper filters do a much better job of avoiding full on hydrolock than anything else, especially when combined with an absorbent module in the intake box. I carry 2 extras with me at all times incase. If the paper fills up with water, I can atleast keep the engine running to evaporate water drops that get through, and pull the filter before it disintegrates.
FYI my airbox is surprisingly water proof, unless I'm stagnant in water, it stays dry.
@KSIFLYBOY thats living too close to the edge for my liking. Sounds like I prefer my bottom to be clenching a lot less than you when i go fording. There is no need to spend 400 bucks on a snorkel, make one up yourself. All you need to do is connect a length of flexible pipe to your airbox then attach that to a length up the windscreen pillar and then pop an airfilter on the end. All you got to worry about then is keeping your sparks dry:)
@KSIFLYBOY Mind you, the last time i was in deep water my ass went into spasm. I followed a landrover discovery (my previous car)into a rather large puddle underneath a railway bridge where the road dips down underneath it. It is next to a pub and i wondered why a group of guys were stood outside watching. I was driving a diesel citroen zx, i slowed to watch the disco go into the water to see how deep it was. Seemed ok... so i followed...
@KSIFLYBOY ...then to my horror i watched the water cover his rear bumper! I couldn't stop, i had to carry on, despite not going fast enough to create a bow wave and the water was over the top of my bonnet. Then my headlights started to flicker, they were on because it was about 10:30 at night in winter. I was crapping myself waiting for that big bang as engine poarts fled the scene, but thankfully it just kept going and out the other side of the 'puddle'.
@KSIFLYBOY The clutch juddered and sueeled for a couple of days, but apart from small brown stains in my underwear there were no other problems.
By the way, you can seal your airbox as much as you like, the water usually gets in through the open pipe where your air intake is. I'd still recommend raising it via a snorkel as it doesn't have to cost a lot of money, just a bit of time and inginuity.
@koitorob I can make one out of 3" exhaust tubing, bend it nice and pretty then paint it, but thats last on my list right now as far as mods go, lol. My open pipe goes through the fender and such, and because of where the box is placed, it really doesn't pull in water unless I sit stagnant and the water can flood the inner fender. The factory plastic tubing is also bent just right that it acts kindof like a water trap, so water won't just flow in...
@KSIFLYBOY My friend i will make this my last comment(until my next one ha ha ). Need i point out that while your engine is running, it is sucking in air?You don't have to worry about water finding it's own way in, your engine will happily suck it in for you. A sort of vehicular suicide:( If the open end of your air intake is behind your fender, it sounds like you are gambling heavily everytime you go wading... If it was my car: Job 1 Raise intake.2 waterproof ignition 3seal cabin but thats me
@koitorob trust me, the air intake is essentially waterproof, of all my water forging that was the only time I pulled water, so until I build a snorkle, I'm not too worried about it.....if I blow the motor, its an excuse to swap in a sbc 350 :D
@koitorob sbc 350 means a small block Chevrolet 5.7L engine. Its a smaller 350 in physical size while still having the displacement of any other 350 motor. Makes it easy to fit lots of power between the fenders of a smaller vehicle (I.E. wrangler or pathfinder vs a suburban size vehicle)
@KSIFLYBOY Of course, small block chevy...i knew that:)
I know how well they go. My cousin had a 5.7 bored to about 5.9 in his volvo 760 four door saloon. As it was built by Don Garlitz, it, er, went rather well! At least it did when he got to his third gearbox...
@KSIFLYBOY When he bought it it had an ex touring car race box in it. It blew up. Next was a genuine rally spec TR8 rally gearbox...it blew up. The last box came from a NASCAR. Sadly he has since broke the car up and sold the parts. It was firts built by Cliff Richard, the singer. He had a stingray and this volvo. Liked the comfort of the volvo and the chevy's speed. Don Garlitz left the 2 cars in a garage and the monster was spawned. I look at Cliff in a whole new light now...
@azminivanracer Don't need to. My excursion into the puddle was a big misjudgement on my part, which won't be happening again! Especially as i have now swapped the old ZX for an identical car but this time fitted with a 1400cc petrol engine. Sadly finances dictate having to cut back for a year:(

@zz572 if that was a ocean in the background im pretty sure theres salt, even if it were a river flowing into a ocean there would be salt from the sand.
@zz572 i see a beach....and unless your playing at one of the great lakes, im pretty sure that is an ocean. name one ocean you know of that is not salt water...and the "its only money" comment...its pretty easy to say when your the one who has money. share the wealth brotha! i got a YJ that needs some love!
