  • Wish they would play that song live again.

  • @fcmike58. Fuck off fatty. Probably mad Cuz u a fatass Ginger too

  • oh my God they are kids here!

    Thank you for this!

  • I Saw "Point Of No Return" Tour 1978 Chicago Ampitheater.........2nd Greatest Concert Mine Eyes Have Ever Witnessed!!!!!!......

  • Wow... Rich lost a lot of weight later

  • Haha fatass Ginger on the guitar

  • @thatwazapdude Dude Get Off Music Pages......Cuz Your Comments Are Lame And Pointless

  • Tragic that there was no HD cameras and and sound recording equipment back then. Now that there are virtually no groups worth watching, we have it all. That Sucks! Love Kansas!

  • @hootch2 : This is off the dvd of the Sail-on box. Sound and image are much better on that than it shows here.I can recommend it!!

  • This is my favourite video on YouTube. I watched this about 4 years ago and I've never been the same since. Thanks Jose Portnoy.

  • My all time favorite band is YES. However, I have been getting back into Kansas lately and I have to say that Kansas tops for best American prog rock band! I can't wait until prog rock comes back into the mainstream. Not that the music nowadays doesn't bring inspiration to people. Its just that, if people gave this music a chance, they might realize its some of the most prodigious stuff around! Blessings to all! Live in love everyone!

  • Brilliance.

  • Awesome! Sould a little bit like Gentle Giant

  • GODS!

  • Fucking awesome!

  • Awesome...

  • Most people have no idea how long Kansas actually played together. The band was originally known as White Clover. They changed their name to Kansas in 1972 after signing with Don Kirshner....At the time they had been touring as White clover since the late 60's...

  • OK look, prog rock is very nitchy...that we all know. Most people don't get all this noodling and space riffs. At least Kansas put some kick ass fucking rock and blues into it. And thank God they had Kerry Livgren who knew how to write and arrange music and Steve Walsh who could scream a decent tenor!

  • Steve sings the hell out of this. 5:56 to 6:54 gives me chills. Incredible, timeless song.

  • @1978lowride If he could sing ONLY one song like this today I would be eternally grateful,I sorely miss the voice of old. Walsh in the 70's was a treat to listen to and it pains me I can't hear something like that anymore.

  • @Zorack10 I'm in 100% agreement with you......I still love Kansas and see them every chance I get, but it breaks my heart to see Walsh still trying to bang out those tunes with those rusty, leaky pipes he has today. At least we still have the albums to take us back in time when we were ALL a lot younger.

  • @YesRushELP jesus I am new to this (not to Kansas )why are you so brutal? Did you think he would be a kid forever, he grew up you should too.Life happens, they are still the music prodigies they always were and are. Cannot wait to see them.

  • @1978lowride I totally relate, his voice blends into the instruments on those a4 to c5 notes. Incredible singer.

  • Steve sings the hell out of this...incredible, timeless song.

  • excellent!!! what really stuck out to me was how small a drum kit Ehart was using....fantastic all around!

  • Wow, look at how young all of the band members are here, and already what great musicians they were.

  • Steve is the greatest rock singer... ever. Yes, his voice has taken an unfortunate beating over these last 40 years but listen to him here.

  • @jhelmwaterw 6:35 to 6:50 pretty much sums up the raw talent and emotion of the voice and the band itself. Where did it come from when these guys were just in their young 20's?? always seemed like this band started at age 30 given the maturity level of the song content and the advanced musicianship. Has any other band ever been compared to Kansas???

  • @4graces The fact that they were as young as they were when they wrote and performed some of their early songs is simply AMAZING. Kansas has always been a VERY underrated band IMO.

  • Thanks Kansas, for keeping Hermann Hesse's memory alive. This song will be a great closer to the "Narcissus and Goldmund" feature film.

  • Like virtually every other Kansas song..... WOW. Talk about talent, I saw them 36 years ago, and haven't stopped listening to them since.

  • These bards are of the genius breed!

  • Here is the real music. Not crap as we have today...

  • Steve's VOIICCeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee..yummy.

  • My brother brought the 8 track tape home to our house, ever since I' ve been hooked.

  • this is one of my favorite Kansas songs

  • 1:05 drum roll reminds me of a blast-beat for a second haha. That was a Good roll!

  • One of the greatest songs of all time (any band). Is this based on the Hermann Hesse book, Narcissus and Goldmund?

  • I love thid friggon song. Love it!! damn it to hell. I love the song, you got a problem with that? AWESOMENESS.

  • Wow! What album was this from?

    Kansas FTW!

  • @RaidonSama

from there first album called "kansas" (1974). Also for me one of my favorite.

  • Kansas has always been one of my favorite bands. I remember when I played in bands. There was one guy, a drummer, who thought he wanted do a few Kansas songs. Though a fairly proficient drummer he couldn't hold a candle to Phil Ehart. Of course I was singing for this particular band and I couldn't hold a candle to Steve Walsh.

Great band! One of the best of all time.

  • Music....Brains..... Music

    Pay attention kids!

  • This is the oldest footage I have ever seen..Kerry sitting playing Keyboards?

    Great post !!

  • I wonder how the heck they kept the violin from feeding back with all that oldskool equipment?!

  • And that's why this performance is awesome.

  • Woot, Kansas with a legal Steve Walsh. After Two for the Show, he started to suck.

  • Where & how did he exactly suck? On 'Monolith' or on 'Audio Visions' or on the albums beyond that? I have 'Monolith' and imho he does not suck there. Also not on the live recordings from '79 - '81 (Alpine Valley, Chicago, Houston, NY, Netherlands) that can be found on YT.

  • you uneducated asshole. walsh from 74 to 83 maybe 85 was the best..look everyone just listen to the devil game, it's you or on the other side....

  • wow and they called bands from the 80's "hair bands" ..lol ..one of the most awesome songs from one of the most awesome bands ever !

  • DANG! That boy can sing and that band can play!

  • my kid just said..."I didn't know Haggard from Harry Potter could play violin!" LOL!

  • I looked up Narcissus and Goldmund on the internet. Sounds like a story of Steve and Kerry?

  • Maybe.. They Were so different, but Steve could be the "young" Goldmund to and Kerry the "teacher" Narcissus.

This is my favorite book of my favorite writer, also the inspiration to this Masterpiece for my favorite band :)

  • in what ways were they differnet?

  • lol Rich Williams Looks like Andre the Giant Playing Guitar

  • what does Mariabronn signify? Anyone know?

  • Is a name of a college. Please read the Herman Hesse's book "Narcisus and Goldmund" and you'll undestand this song.

  • YEAHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ok... for every kansas fan out there... any song with walsh from 74 to 80 is insane... without question the greatest vocalist of the 70's...

  • Without question the greatest vocalist of the 70's? Steve Perry, Jon Anderson, Dennis DeYoung...the list is long and I'm sure I'm leaving out quite a few others. Great vocalist, yes, the greatest, no!

  • @sfxavier: In my book, Steve Perry can't hold a candle to Steve Walsh.

Dennis DeYoung is great too, but Steve has more power in his voice from what I've heard.

Jon Anderson is also great, but still, there's noone like Walsh in my opinion.. But still, they're all great vocalists! :)

  • yes @sfxavier walsh was in a class by himself... his range, intonation, n falseto n vibrato is the best i've ever heard. who care's about now. he is the greatest vocalist of his time.. anyone out there wanna tell me who's better? not... walsh rules!!!!

  • @cdlaino Francesco in Banco del Mutuo Soccorso? =)

  • How can anyone say "this is their Best song!" U freakin' idiot- they had SOOO many full albums, chock full of 1st rate quality songs, beginning with Masque, Leftoverture & PoKR- everything with Walsh on vocal- this band had 6 original geniuses, not just Livgren(the one Christian- later!) as thought by some!

  • is it impossible for someone to hava heard ALL their songs...and still think this is their best one?

  • it's the best one, except for all the other ones ;)

  • Kerry looks like R. Waekman,

    what you guys think??????

  • Saw Kansas on the "Song for America" tour, the opening act for YES, they're "Relayer" tour. I didn't know they're music at the time, but what an inpression they made! It's unusual that an opening act with unfamiliar music has such force and presence! I agree with bigdaddyjohnny59, the late 60's and early seventies produced some of the best groups the Music Industry has ever had the priviledge to record. Certainly at the top of that list is this group,Kansas! Their music, in a word, Symphonic!!!

  • Every time I watch this I start to cry -- like I'm sure people did back in the times of Beethoven and Handel, when their works were performed!!!!!!

  • Why did/do people love Kansas so much?

Was it the spirituality of the songs?

I was fortunate to have seen them live at the Merriweather in the early 80"s and there was no comparison to any other live band I had ever seen. They make music that moves the soul.

I only regret they are not together any longer.

  • Kansas is still touring and they still have 3 of the original band members. I am going to see them in Tacoma in Oct. They have just released a DVD as well which has all of the original band members except for Robbie.

  • they are, i just saw them!

  • I love Kansas but they are no Gentle Giant that is for sure.

  • thank god. otherwise i would have bought all of both of their collections, when i could have just bought either one and saved all that money!

    ;)

  • This is from Hermen Hesse's book Narcissus and Goldmund.

    I recomend it highly.

  • 95% of the music I listen to today came from the 70's. And who can blame me? Hundreds of the greatest bands ever came out of that decade. With choices like Emerson, Lake and Palmer, King Crimson, Rush, Yes, Journey, Chicago, Boston, Styx, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull...well let's face it. It's a very, very long list, and almost impossible to pick one favorite. But if someone asked me, "Who was the greatest band of all time?", I would have no choice but to say...."Who else? Kansas". Nuff said.

  • for me it would be Yes, tho Kansas is up there too, this is their best song!

  • @bigdaddyjohnny59 Don't forget Genesis, Led Zeppelin, and Frank Zappa.

  • @DanSkaMetal813 As I said, the list is very, very long. It would take several pages to list all of the great bands from that era. But, yes, those are certainly 3 of the greatest.

  • @bigdaddyjohnny59 You just said all my favourite bands!

  • @bigdaddyjohnny59 Yeah Bigdaddy--- Great comment. The best music was from the 70's! I am eternally connected to that musical era. Rock on!!

  • @bigdaddyjohnny59 Without a doubt - Kansas is number 1. I like them all - including Zeppelin - but Kansas stands out in the test of time and talent.

  • @bigdaddyjohnny59 You forgot to mention Genesis

  • I always have, and always will love this band. From the first they captured my heart and my imagination with a sound that is clean, lyrics that some how celebrate the human condition, without abasing themselves, and rock music at its best. simply put...Kansas forever!

  • That voice sends shivers down my spine!Exellent!!

  • This band is very difficult play from a drummers point of view. Many time changes. Great challange and a fantstastic band. From top to bottom, outstanding.

  • That's way makes Phil Ehart one of the best in the biz!

  • I second that thought! I grew up on Yes, ELP, Gentle Giant and the like, and no band can "lose me" quicker than Kansas

when I'm trying to play along. Am I the only one who believes that Kansas was the best (rock) band the US ever produced? Their musical arrangements, the harmonies, Steve Walsh's incredible voice, Phil's drumming...I rest my case!

  • the best prog band ever!!

  • Inspired by my favorite book, Hesse's: Narcissus and Goldmund

  • Damn Walsh could sing back then!

  • Kansas is incredibly symphonic and plays so tightly. Did they live together and practice non-stop or what? I don't understand how a band such as this can get this good at playing.

  • this band kansas sounds like a great orchestra they can play anything they want 2 whatever they play sounds fabulous

  • Kansas and Queen toured together in the late seventies! Both great singers - but hated eachother! I think Steve Walsh is great but Freddy Mercury is the absolute top!

  • Comment removed

  • Did u ever heared a got singing? :O and u cant say: a god :| there its just 1 god :)no 2 no 3 just 1 :)

  • KuKluxKlanMix-What the FUCK are you talking about man!!!!

  • lol I know what u mean =D

  • f*** Mercury,Steve rules!Go listen to Queen.Thanks!

  • God damn it... I should have never said anything. Queen's good. Kansas is good. It's all about aesthetic tastes, people. Go with what you like.

  • I love early Kansas, but then again I am a fan of most of what they have done over the years. Can anyone inform me if Steve Walsh is Native-American? What a great performer, singer, and musician.

  • He is! Great eye you have there! Yes, he is Native-American, but he does not know what percentage or what tribe he's from, as he was adopted as a child.

  • Thanks for clearing this up.

  • This song has, and always will have a place in my heart. Kansas has had such a positive influence in my life, I can barely describe how things have dramatically changed for me as my out look has matured. This has happened over many years, but never the less made me more open to people and their ways. Kansas rules!

  • Steve claims he isn't Native American, but, I've known those who are who look IDENTICAL to the way he appears. No matter, Steve and Kansas really continue to Rock! Can't wait for their newest DVD to be released later this year and to see them in concert, again.

  • This looks like an early video, but richard looks really big in those overalls and I thought he didn't gain weight until much later. Does anybody know when and where this was made?

  • simply awesome

  • So great to see and hear them then! Thanks for posting !!

  • the audio is not the greatest but if you are t true fan who cares

  • I am a fan! Thia and SFA are my two fave Kansas CDs! I'm glad Sony finally remastered those 2 in '04

  • Christ. Both Steve and Freddie ruled. Shut the hell up already with the dick-swinging. Sheesh!

  • jeez... don't read the comments while listening to the song. All I could hear is the sound of chickens squaking in my mind. Lighten up fella's. And as the Doobie Brothers sang..."Listen to the music".

  • enfin un groupe americain qui donne une autre image de leur talent

  • Heads up! The Spirit Drum and Bugle Corps will be playing this in 2009

  • Spirit is playing Journey From Mariabronn?? I knew they were doing a Kansas show (which I've wanted to see a drum corps do for a LONG time), but I didn't know what they were actually playing. I can't wait to see their show.

  • This is the tentative closer. The actual song list hasn't been set yet, but rough drafts so far are looking good and staying true to the originals!

  • That's going to be awesome. I'm really excited to see that show.

  • Kansas just made my face melt...awesome!!!

  • steve walsh in his day was vocally insane! no one from the 70's can match him. kerry's story telling just as impressive

  • are you kidding me? yes, freddie was great, always in the upper register. but what planet are you from? walsh in his early days would blow him away!!!!!!

  • @cdamonlaino

Ohohohohoooo, we don't need to bring up this battle again. Hahaha.

Seriously, the Freddie VS Steve debate is like apples and oranges.

  • I must concur, the comparison is unfair to Mercury. It leaves him weeping in a corner in the fetal position. Walsh could beat him to death while sleeping.

  • Er... I'm sorry to disagree but I seriously doubt Steve could sing anything like The Millionaire Waltz or The March of the Black Queen. Those are true vocal bibles, only one of those songs is more than enough to prove that Mercury was and still is unmatched. Not only for his register (which, BTW, is bigger than Steve's) but for his whole vocal performance, phrasing and modulation. Flawless. Mercury is out of this world.

  • If you're going to make a point, it's best to pick examples that actually further it. And whether or Mercrury's range is larger proves nothing (I would have to say you are wrong in that respect). The primary thing that bothers me about his singing is his absolutely horrible vibrato. It's like someone's pressing a board against his throat while he's singing... And Mercury was even worse live whereas Walsh was way better live(I can vouch for that, every performance I have is nearly flawless)...

  • Mercury's highest recorded note is an E4 (on Hang on in There), while Steve's top note is always a D4. Mercury hits a low F on Somebody to Love and All Dead All Dead. Steve's lowest recorded note on Kansas I think isn't even a low G. Whether you like Freddie's vibrato or not, doesn't matter, we're not talking about what we like or not, we're discussing both singers's vocal abilities.

  • Singing ability and vocal range are two completely different things. Just because he can hit the note doesn't mean it sounds decent (and in comparison to his lower notes, that's a big deal). When Walsh hits his higher notes, it's not strained, but controlled and clear. Walsh has flawless control over the entirety of his vocal range. I don't care if he can sing the higher notes if it sounds like he's strangling a cat to get the sound. Vibrato is an important part of singing. His is unpleasant.

  • I know they're two different things but you said I was wrong in saying Mercury had a wider range and I am not. But saying Freddie's higher notes sound strained is something quite silly to say. You can tell the man does not sound strained, mainly because he always sung very high and the vocal cord can't take unhealthy effort without fucking up. There's no use in saying that Mercury sounded strained when you have things like A Winter's Tale or Mother Love which were sung when he was almost dead.

  • 20 years after he started singing. A strained voice wouldn't last 2 years. And I repeat, when it comes to phrasing and modulation, as main things in the overall performance, Mercury remains unmatched. The Millionaire Waltz proves me right.

  • I can't stand that song.. and no, it does not...

  • What's the point in arguing if you're gonna put your personal taste before technical facts?

  • I'm not... you are. Walsh very technically is a better singer. The ONLY thing that is TECHNICALLY better about Mercury is his slightly larger vocal range... Which is, thus far, the only actual fact you've presented. That in no way makes him a better singer, however TECHNICAL you want to get...

  • I talked about phrasing and modulation, you just said 'NO', 'I don't like Mercury', 'I hate that song'. Do you think that's a technical explanation?? Freddie's overall phrasing is much more 'articulated' than Steve's, including falsetto and the passaggio itself. The variation on the timbre and different approach to diverse styles in songs like Jealousy or One Year Of Love. The Hitman or Was It All Worth It.

  • NO. I never even said those were technical explanations... You really should actually read my messages before you call them bullshit. Seriously, you read my posts like a conservative reads a newspaper... This argument is about as mentally stimulating as Fox News, so I think I'll just stop responding to you...

  • If Walsh didn't do what Mercury did, and Mercury didn't do what Walsh did, then you can't compare them, can you? They're two different machines. About the only thing that is comparable at ALL to the two singers is that Walsh (in his prime, of course) could blow Freddie out of the water live. Live. Live live live. It's because Freddie's voice was effected by vocal nodules, which in turn damaged his range when he hadn't vigorously practiced the notes before attempting them.

    That's it, though. :P

  • That's a response I can properly address. The two are not easily comparable because they have entirely different vocal and musical styles, but I would still be inclined to say that Walsh's voice is far clearer (even when comparing studio recordings), Mercury's has a murkier quality to it (especially in vibrato).

And Walsh was nearly FLAWLESS live, in every song. I fact, I would be inclined to say that most of his live performances were better than the studio recordings.

  • Freddie and Steve are both my main inspirations as a singer. Freakin' love 'em and appreciate them both to death, I do.

Fun fact: Did you know that Steve stopped warming up before singing because the band made fun of his warm-up routine? I have a feeling that had a LOT to do with his voice getting shot in '82.

Steve was also inspired by oldies rock 'n' roll singer and blues artists, where as Freddie got his eventual inspiration from opera singers. That's why they're so hard to compare, too.

  • Steve Walsh is my hero! My goal musically is to be like a Steve Walsh/Kerry Livgren hybrid (minus the born again Christianity).

lol, that's pretty humourous actually. But I do think his voice still sounded great at that point as well.

That actually partially explains my extreme preference of Walsh over Mercury. I HATE Opera, the influence of that musical style probably only registered in my subconscious (with my built in Opera filter :P). I still like Mercury though. Just not as much as Walsh.

  • I've always loved opera... which doesn't seem like it suits me, because I'm also a rock tenor very much akin to Steve Walsh, Steve Perry or James LaBrie. And I'm in fucking love with punk rock as well. Hahaha... what I blend I am.

Anything extraordinary that anyone can do with their voice; anything that breaks from the norm, has always interested me. It's sort of an obsession. That's why I love Fred and Steve so much.

Look up Mercury's opera life in the late eighties... you just might dig it.

  • ta weno kansas!!

  • This is the best music video I've ever seen on YT. Lyrics from the heart, music that swoops and soars, this song is one of Kansas' highlights! Thank you for posting this video.

  • You must be schizophrenic!

  • No, just drunk and misunderstood...I love Kansas!

  • Them you should go to my channel! I've uploaded some Kansas songs (audio not video) and have more to come! Rock on!

  • I'm only 22, and when I mention that I love Kansas, especially because of the violin, everyone my age always says "oh, a violin like Yellowcard?" and I have to say, "Ummm, no. Much better than Yellowcard." I mean no disrespect to yellocard, but come on, their violinist can't compare to Robby.

  • i dont beleive in a god,but this is god-like.

or i should say look how great humans can be for a change.

other worldly, any advanced civilization would appreciate this

  • I didn't really mean the vocals, I meant just the whole thing in general. I enjoyed the Two for the Show version more because of it's unbelievable instrumental section in the middle of the song. I do, however, like the vocals in this recording better.

  • Listen to the "Two for the Show" live recording of this song, it's even better.

  • Nah I disagree. Steve kind of held back on the vocal on that one. The vocal on this version is incredible, even with Steve's couple of slip-ups.

  • This is my favorite song of all time. Close tie with "Close to the Edge" by Yes for the longest time, but "Close to the Edge" doesn't give me goosebumps like "Journey from Mariabronn".

  • most underappreciated band ever along with dire straits. every time i hear this song i get an amazing musical insparation and i compsoe classical music!

  • WOW! Steve sings his heart out! I'm in love with that voice!

  • steve walsh is the best ever to me. can't get enough. wish there was more of his ballads on you tube.

  • I'm 47 yrs old... and I'm addicted to Kanza- Tunes...I've tried Doctors, but it dose not help.

  • Don't worry about your addiction; I'm 22 and I just barely been addicted to Kansas for about a year. But that's because the lyrics for their songs actually mean something to me.

  • They'll never be music like this again. This is definitely one of the best Kansas songs ever! Thanks for posting.

  • The very best Kansas song of all time! One of the musically best songs of all time.

  • New Rock Theme Park with KANSAS attractions planned.

Great K Set last night, in Las Vegas.

See my Link for K set-list-info-etc... POTSW K Southwind

  • The real kansas! This song is epic!

  • I saw Kansas in Dodge City in the early 70's but was too young to realize how brilliant they really were. Now I appreciate their songwriting and musical/vocal talents so much more.

  • My God, could Steve Walsh sing!!!!!!

  • I have loved Kansas since 1974. My brother had a band and they played "Can I tell you". I went out and bought their first album after hearing that song. Anyway, to this day whenever I hear 4:10-5:40 of "Journey to Marianbronn" it freakin makes me feel exhilarated. The musical transitions/passages Kansas used are just not found in rock music today

  • It annoys me that some people think they know KANSAS because they know "Carry on my Wayward son" and "Dust in the wind." This is true kansas

  • amen.

  • awesome band...one of the best in history

  • in the 70s it was about what you sounded like, not how you looked. it wasn't about slickness, gimmickery, fancy clothes & put-on hollywood bull shit for dumbed down phonys. you had to have talent, true creativity & PLAY to the seats. That's what people responded to. a time when imaginative bands created art with meaning, powerful music with depth & real feeling. not throwaway, samey-sounding disposable contrived on a marketing farce, passionless, off the shelf uninspiring robotic WASTE like now

  • Agreed. KANSASband c o m - NUMAvox c o m Kerry.

NEW CD out this week : "TWO FORE THE SHOW."

    21+ LIVE tracks, mixed-enhanced-etc by Jeff G.

    A Sony Release.

  • Musically and lyrically the greatest band ever!

  • Also, as a keyboard player to be able to play the way he does and sing as well, takes a lot of talent. Most of the work he does with Kansas was written with two keyboard parts, and he finds ways to mix them in ingeniously on the live shows. I've never used Kurzweil keyboards, but I know with my Roland Rig, doing what he does isn't easy. It amazes me that he bangs away like Peanuts Schroeder, and yet the sounds are incredible, so he may be an odd fella, but I agree he's a master at his craft

  • steve walsh should have kept at the "oh's" at the outro. its the BEST part of the song!

  • I've been a wheathead since the 70's a big fan of Kansas, but do have to say Steve Walsh as talented as he is, is an ass, which is why he does very few interviews, I think the band is afraid to let him talk. He looks to have gotten better over the years, a bit of a recluse, maybe he's got a taste of humble pie, good that he's remained drug free, but hey, Mozart wasn't a prince either.

  • hey navygent, i've been a kansas fan since way back when. met walsh a number of times. yes he seems to be private, but as a fellow musician, i don't blame him for keeping to himself. everybody can't be robby! yes, it sucks he's seperated himself from the fans. but give the man his due. only one thing i don't agree with. he believes his more recent projects are better than anything he did with kansas. sorry, steve it's the complete oppisite

  • I never met Steve, so maybe quick on judgement there, on my end. But from his responses to his fans on his website (which wasn't always friendly), and absence from Wheathead events, it's a shame. I agree with you on his projects, remember now, Kerry Livgren also played keyboards and wrote most of the music. The good news is that Kerry is still an "unofficial" member in that he contributes to the songs so we may see some new material in the future.
