Ben Wienman is handling both primary and secondary guitar work for this album (he did the same thing on Under The Running Board). Pennie had jammed (and presumably written) for this album but left a month or 2 before recording was to take place.

I have been hearing Pennie was leaving for about 2 months now... It's disappointing to see him leave to such a lame band... but Gil rips and hopefully he brings something interesting to DEP...
Chris' departure, to me, is the most tragic band lineup change in my lifetime. I thought it was bad when Opeth lost Martin Lopez followed by Peter Lindgren a few weeks ago-but this trumps that by a long shot. Sharone is great, but Pennie is irreplaceable-and completely overqualified to play in C&C.

Personally, I even like Gil playing drums more than Chris. I mean, I love Chris, the stuff he plays is unique and mind-blowing, but EG the way he jammed with TM Stevens wasn't that impressive.. IMO Sharone has more of a feeling of swing, he's more musical in a way, he plays with more feeling. Don't get me wrong they both are amazing, I love Chris Pennie, but Sharone is just closer to my understanding and sense of playing drums. So really this news aren't bad at all, at least to me.
this has got to be the greatest webisode ever. Musical genius and comical too. Journey are amazing. I've no doubt that these guys will produce an amazing album, they are all individually and collectively too talented not to produce such an album.
I already posted it on lastfm, but gonna repeat it here. If the actual reason Pennie left TDEP is to join Coheed it's just hillarious in my opinion. I mean it's the band that wrote "a favor house atlantic" song and actually performed it in the way it's performed.. Well, and all other their songs.. I mean all this singing and shit.. But I must admit that it could be possibly worse if he joined up with, eg, brazilian girls or wolfmother.. Never the less, weird stuff, Pennie really surprised me.
I dont want to maky any sweeping statements because its not my place to be doing so, but i think that he'll be better off in Coheed because they can offer a better lifestyle. Yknow, signed to a major, bigger band with more 'accesible music' etc. The sole time i met Chris (which WAS a few years ago) he mentioned that between Dillinger tours he would crash on people's sofas and teach drums for a bit of cash. Pehaps he got sick of that? Who knows? I don't! Just speculating.
If he was really uncomfortable with this financial situation his decision seems reasonable... But on the other hand he is a musician and his artwork must be the biggest thing that matters to him as an artist, at least in my perspective.
Anyway I've never experienced such a sort of situation so I'm not really the person to gudge and, most importantly, don't want interfere private life, especially the person's who I respect that much as Pennie. So I really apologize, now I realise some things I posted may sound silly.
Chris leaving is different than any of the previous members because he was responsible for 50% of the song writing. The only people in the band to have ever been involved with song writing are Ben and Chris. Now half of that is gone. That's my logic. "Real" wasn't the best choice of word, but I didn't want to sit around thinking about it too much. Also, his departure doesn't half to be a bad thing. I'll wait and see.
Personally I think Chris Pennie is slightly overrated. He is an absolutely amazing drummer, no doubt, but people acted like he was the ONLY drummer on earth with that kind of talent. I work at guitar center and I see 3 or 4 kids a week come in there with comparable technical ability. As for the song writing, I'm not sure what percentage of the songwriting he's responsible for, I'm not in the band.
Greg said this: "Ben and Chris write the bulk of the music, they start with either riffs and guitar parts or crazy rhythms or patterns that Chris comes up with. The rest of us contribute a little music, but they are the bulk." in an interview liked on their Wikipedia page. I'm assuming he wasn't lying.
that whole thing was pretty awesome. my band and i where practicing last night in huntington beach off of slater at griffdogs and this is where this was taped. we thought it sounded like them and sure enough it was. we listened in the whole time. it was pretty intense. yup. way stoked.

Hahahahah this is awesome. I was so bummed out when i heard Chris has quit but Gil seems fucking insane to boot. Obviously it won't be "THE SAME" But i'm all for change. Bring on the new record..

I have been hearing Pennie was leaving for about 2 months now... It's disappointing to see him leave to such a lame band... but Gil rips and hopefully he brings something interesting to DEP...

Chris' departure, to me, is the most tragic band lineup change in my lifetime. I thought it was bad when Opeth lost Martin Lopez followed by Peter Lindgren a few weeks ago-but this trumps that by a long shot. Sharone is great, but Pennie is irreplaceable-and completely overqualified to play in C&C.

haha, just watched this again, i love how greg and Ben look as if the yare going to break their asses laughing after they finish their "speaking" segments.. especially greg, you just see him start smirking when the before the camera moves! Funniest guys in music.

Personally, I even like Gil playing drums more than Chris. I mean, I love Chris, the stuff he plays is unique and mind-blowing, but EG the way he jammed with TM Stevens wasn't that impressive.. IMO Sharone has more of a feeling of swing, he's more musical in a way, he plays with more feeling. Don't get me wrong they both are amazing, I love Chris Pennie, but Sharone is just closer to my understanding and sense of playing drums. So really this news aren't bad at all, at least to me.

I love Coheed and I love Dillinger, so in my view, both bands now have excellent drummers.

this has got to be the greatest webisode ever. Musical genius and comical too. Journey are amazing. I've no doubt that these guys will produce an amazing album, they are all individually and collectively too talented not to produce such an album.

I already posted it on lastfm, but gonna repeat it here. If the actual reason Pennie left TDEP is to join Coheed it's just hillarious in my opinion. I mean it's the band that wrote "a favor house atlantic" song and actually performed it in the way it's performed.. Well, and all other their songs.. I mean all this singing and shit.. But I must admit that it could be possibly worse if he joined up with, eg, brazilian girls or wolfmother.. Never the less, weird stuff, Pennie really surprised me.

I dont want to maky any sweeping statements because its not my place to be doing so, but i think that he'll be better off in Coheed because they can offer a better lifestyle. Yknow, signed to a major, bigger band with more 'accesible music' etc. The sole time i met Chris (which WAS a few years ago) he mentioned that between Dillinger tours he would crash on people's sofas and teach drums for a bit of cash. Pehaps he got sick of that? Who knows? I don't! Just speculating.

If he was really uncomfortable with this financial situation his decision seems reasonable... But on the other hand he is a musician and his artwork must be the biggest thing that matters to him as an artist, at least in my perspective.

Anyway I've never experienced such a sort of situation so I'm not really the person to gudge and, most importantly, don't want interfere private life, especially the person's who I respect that much as Pennie. So I really apologize, now I realise some things I posted may sound silly.

Chris leaving is different than any of the previous members because he was responsible for 50% of the song writing. The only people in the band to have ever been involved with song writing are Ben and Chris. Now half of that is gone. That's my logic. "Real" wasn't the best choice of word, but I didn't want to sit around thinking about it too much. Also, his departure doesn't half to be a bad thing. I'll wait and see.

Personally I think Chris Pennie is slightly overrated. He is an absolutely amazing drummer, no doubt, but people acted like he was the ONLY drummer on earth with that kind of talent. I work at guitar center and I see 3 or 4 kids a week come in there with comparable technical ability. As for the song writing, I'm not sure what percentage of the songwriting he's responsible for, I'm not in the band.

that whole thing was pretty awesome. my band and i where practicing last night in huntington beach off of slater at griffdogs and this is where this was taped. we thought it sounded like them and sure enough it was. we listened in the whole time. it was pretty intense. yup. way stoked.
