  • i just got my first pattern welded knife, it's a recurved bowie, it gives me happy feelings to look at.

  • @FatGuyWithAKatana

    Cool.

Are you going to post pics??

  • @Conan568 i slapped em on my facebook, might do up a video but my camera probably won't pick up the layers all that well in video mode so i'll have to open up windows movie maker and every time i do that it burns when i pee.

  • @FatGuyWithAKatana

I know what you mean about movie maker, I just use Win Live to do it now..

I managed to get a pretty good clip of my big stag Damascus bowie tho.

Lighting is important when you film knives.

  • @Conan568 vid is up, poor lighting but sorta decent pics at the end.

  • How would I know if I own a damascus knife? Is there a marking on it somewhere? I found a bunch of old knives at an estate sale and some look like on or two of these. Thx

  • @Tboom49 Look at the blade backs, if you can see layers then it's pattern welded Damascus.

  • @Conan568 hello could i ask a little advice on pattern welding,I have a home-made brake forge and have been trying to make damascus on a small scale(small pieces of different sheet metal, thin gauge mild steel,Stainless, and some tool steel from an old file)everything seemed clear from your vids I heated it WHITE hot and smashed it together ,drew it out and when i sheared it to make the first fold as i tapped on the backside to fold it the stack just blew apart.any suggestions?old borax perhaps?TY

  • @MrJsowa

Your welds failed because of one thing, stainless steel.

Leave it out next time and you should be OK.

  • @Conan568 thanks man i really appreciate it,just what i had lying around, but makes sense tho now i think about it SS is tough stuff and surely has a higher melting temp?ty again, and BTW i love the dagger at 35sec in this vid

  • Silly me, who thought that Damascus steel was actually made in Damascus. Like in Arabia and all. By those horrible muslim arab terrorist that you seem to appreciate so much. When was the last time that you saw an arab ? It just seemed funny to me that you would brag about making Damascus steel, while it's just mimics it's appearance, and be such a racist, anti-muslim christian american, while Damascus is BAD ARABS lolololo

  • @rekomsoj Izlam isn't a race.

    It's a cult.

As I've said many times before, there were two types of Damascus steel being made and traded in that city, and both are accurately called Damascus steel.

You obviously know nothing of either type.

BTW if you going to play the "race bait game" at least [pick a race, not a disease like Izlam.

  • In part 4 you had a gloving iron pieace, and then part 5 does not show the finish of the product, but just different knives. When will you upload the last chapter of you making a "Damascus" knife?

  • @BelRiose2000

Watch the video with the title below, it shows the finished knife.

Re: Making Damascus Steel 4 blade forging

  • lol cool dog :)

  • @cleansingfire100

    Yeah he sure is.

  • did you buy blue-colored steel or you made it blue?

  • @AirsofterSLO

That's more of a gray patina left by the acid I use to bring out the pattern.

  • HEY

where can i buy the knives u made?

  • @yoiashi

I'll be back making them when it cools down, it's just too damned hot now.

When you see me forging another blade you can pm me.

  • this is probably a stupid question but what is Damascus

  • @hello34567890

There are 2 types, pattern welded, or folded and welded Damascus, and Wootz Damascus, or crucible Damascus.

  • Very refreshing seeing someone do something they love, keep up the good work!

  • @Mirage469

Thank you, as soon as it cools down some, I will be starting some new Damascus.

  • Those sky blue blades at 0:18 are fantastic. Was it the particular acid you used to bring out the pattern lines or is the blue a type of blueing?

  • @mojothemigo

That's the patina left by the acid.

  • thats some fancy knifes (Y)

  • @nsfrck5

Thanks, some were made back in the late 80s.

  • looks like a galloping gertie!

  • those are some dirty, splotchy blades brah.

  • awesome work

  • @bigaxe87

    Thanks.

  • Bravo!!!Oh i have a question. How did you get the handle for the knifes

  • @GamingReymond

I collected the burls when I was driving logging truck.

I was very picky and took only those with the gnarliest tightest grain.

  • I salut you from Romania,I appreciate the hard work, These knives are some masterpieces.

  • @VALYK29

    Thank you.

  • Very nice job, good continues to you.

  • @mocthegame

    Thanks.

  • Beautiful knives, very nice work. Did you forge the dog?! :)

  • @Eyeball1975

Thanks,,,Rocky is a self made Dog.

  • 1:14 the machete bowie i want that how much?

  • 0:18 i would consider the middle one a bowie/nachete

  • @IsaacClarke1000

Yeah it will out do a machete though.

  • anyway i can get a short fixed blade knife from you?

  • @40kDakota

Not until I make more steel.

I'll post the video here, and thanks for asking.

  • Hey Conan, did you sell those knife ?

  • @zaimjuwani

    Yes most are gone.

  • 0:17, middle blade.

    What blade length and thickness?

  • @Dafoodmaster

That's an 11" blade of 320 layer steel 5/16" thick at the ricasso.

  • @Conan568 Nice.

  • @Dafoodmaster Thanks.

  • the art of making damascus is gone, there's no way this is legit

  • @proskillz89

Educate yourself, we've been reproducing both Wootz and pattern welded Damascus for years now, and both types are shown being made here on Youtube.

  • @Conan568 hey conan why does Damascus steel have these patterns? and where do you sell these knives? thanks

  • @topguntin

Those patterns are caused by the different layers.

  • @proskillz89 There are people, most notabley Al Pendray making monosteel wave pattern blades. However, even for all the very interesting chemistry in the old wootz steel it was not as good as modern tool steel, monosteel or patternwelded. Look up metallurgist Dr. John Verhoeven

  • Damascus blades can be bent into a ring, I think it's just Russian bulat.

  • @32167BD I've bent mine right around until the tip meets the blade.

  • Holy crap! You forged a dog?!

  • @Karnalsyn

Yep, and he's not for sale either.

  • @Conan568 is te knife at 0:35 for sale

  • @IDontSpeakChinese

    It's long gone.

  • @Conan568 make antother one :D

  • @akinorhan5

    Soon :-).

  • YOu can see all the beautiful layers in the metal

  • @TormentsGateway

Yeah, I've settled on 336 layers now, 448 layers was a bit too fine to see easily in smaller blades.

I like that pattern to jump out at people and grab their attention..

  • do you make knifes and stuff as an hobby ?

  • @Banger896

Yes I wouldn't do it full time, it would take the fun out of it, and turn it into a job.

  • dude great work i always wanted to make a sword. i had this idea for a gunner sword but the only issue i have is weight and ammo. its a small idea but i need to research. but do you think its possible to make a sword out of diamond and stil l mak it tough?

  • @360spider06

They've been putting diamond dust in steel for years.

  • @Conan568 but i mean like straight diamond all the way through. And do you make diamond dust swords too?

  • @360spider06 It's very likely impossible.

I only make very few swords and those are all pattern welded Viking type.

  • @360spider06

Holy shit, that'd be expensive, but maybe possible...

  • WoW u made a dog outta steel... looks soooo bloody real :O very well done :P

  • @jjleejj

    :-)

  • Just wow. Sensation knives.

  • @CampingHappy

    Thank you.

  • the knives are beauties but what exactly is damascus steel

  • @MasterGrunt245

Thanks, there are two types of Damascus steel, pattern welded, or folded steel and Wootz or crucible steel.

  • VERY NICE WORK

  • @MrNightshade69

    Thank you.

  • did you also made the hilts? your knifes are truly amazing piece of art.

  • @yo0yo0yo0

    Thanks, I make everything.

  • 0:56 would have to be my choice.

  • @thing503

312 layers and a maple handle.

  • Those are beautiful! Right on. I am glad this art is being kept alive.

  • @penguinprogrammer

    Thanks.

  • Hey man, nice knives!! I hope I never cut my hand like you (saw in other of your videos), I would scream like a baby lol...

Now, well. I'm from Brasil, I have a machete here that I like a lot but as much I sharp it's blade as more it DOES NOT cut nothing, even to start cuting my skin it needs a good amount of pressure, I want to make it able to shave hair, so, if you do not mind, I would like you to post a video showing how to sharp a big blade.

    Many thanks and Good Job.

  • @arucardseito

It sure hurt when I banged my hand against the car door while I drove to the hospital.

    I almost blacked out.

I have several videos here showing my big blades cutting things like 1.5" thick hanging rope, a 5" thick dried hard fir tree and a 2" by 4" and 2" by 6".

Just have a look you'll find them.

  • Hi, I was wandering if your knives are functional, and if you sell them?

  • @Meixafuhellzman2

Yeah they work pretty well, but I have to make more steel before I can make any knives.

    I'll be at it soon.

  • @Conan568 You make steel? Dang!

  • @TheFr1ch

Yes I make pattern welded Damascus steel.

    Thanks for watching.

  • @matiseq

That is correct, we can make the pattern look like many things.

  • nice job!

  • @BMXERBOY1996

    Thanks.

  • totally bad ass

  • @Tat2urface

    Thanks.

  • these knifes are beautiful art work, should professional photoing these master pieces

  • @FondueLau

    You're right about pics.

Thank you for the kind words.

  • @Conan568 just a silly question, as a blade smith, any commend on using titanium as material?

  • @FondueLau

It's been done and it's colorful.

That's about as far as it goes.

  • @Conan568 i sure it cannot be better then what i saw here, but is there any way i can see a titanium blade?

  • @FondueLau

Sure, Google "titanium blade" you'll see lots of them.

  • would you be willing to sell?

  • @MadNerf

I'm not taking orders at this time because I'm out of Damascus steel and I won't risk cracking a machine casting by forging more Damascus when it's below freezing.

    Been there done that.

I should have a good supply by the spring.

    Thank you for your interest.

  • @Conan568 they are very good looking knives

  • @MadNerf

    Thank you very much.

I'm going to be trying some new things this year.

    One could be a Master-work.

  • well done thats art

  • @360crowley

    Thank you.

Art to most, a weapon that needs banning to a Liberal.

  • really knives well done

  • @360crowley

    Thanks.

  • for some reason when i see damascus steel knives i think of them being in a showcase instead of being used out in the wilderness

  • @romano008

This steel cuts as good as it looks, and when it comes to meat, nothing beats it.

  • do you have a website? i would love to purchase one of these knives.

  • @witchy892

No I don't, it's only a hobby and right now I'm making Damascus steel, and won't be doing knives until late spring.

I make it in batches so I'll have enough to make a dozen on more knives.

    Thank you for your interest.

  • really nice!

  • @jameshem

    Thank you.

  • @cumesoftware

    Thank you.

  • @cumesoftware

Thanks, I do the whole build everything is from scratch including the burls, and wrought iron..

  • what kind of wood is that it is very nice keep up the good work .

  • @hrick3511 I use burls that I collected when I drove log truck.

  • Awesome work!

  • @TheSurvivalResource

    Thank you.

  • you made the dog too?

  • @pRHLT

No, Rocky is his own Dog.

  • Is the small knife at 0:31 and 0:50 the same knife? It's beautiful!

  • @shmuckling

    Yes it is, thanks.

    Good eye.

  • 0:17 how you got blue metal??

  • @HappenZ50

That's more of a gray color, and it's caused by the acid I use to etch the steel.

  • The dog is beautiful:)

  • @Jrowys

Thanks, his happiness shows doesn't it.

  • per square inch how much would Damascus steel cost and also if someone was to make the ultimate sword would this be the right metal to use. soz this is for a school project, cheers,

  • @suckonmycarepackage

You can by lower quality Indian Damascus pretty cheap on ebay.

Leaf springs are ideal for swords.

  • Hey mate, just started looking at making knives and i have to say yours are awesome.. Any chance you could make me a custom handforged damascus boot knife??

  • @fuckusername87 I can't make any knives until I make more steel.

    Thanks for asking.

  • @Conan568 :O You make your own steel? Awesome!

  • hey im just starting into the knife making hobby and was wondering if you know about the quality of purchased blank blades from rocky mountain knife work, im thinking about getting a Damascus blade blank and working it into a nice knife because i have neither the skill nor the equipment to forge or temper my own blades

  • @justindiehl26

    Go for it.

    The steel should be OK.

  • Can i haz knife?

  • @MrFrederiktorp

Most of these were sold years ago.

  • Was that a blue blade at 0:15?! what material was that made from?

  • @Kryptonian42042

That is just gray from when it got etched.

  • right now i neither have the skill or the resources to try my hand at Damascus forging, how good is the quality of file steel for a knife?

  • @IRealBored

    Files make great knives.

    Just anneal it first.

  • @Conan568

i've made several file knifes and none seem to be holding a good edge, i'm sure it's hard, and it just keeps going blunt

  • @IRealBored

Did you harden the files in oil?

Because the knives I've forged from files stay sharp for years.

  • @Conan568 yes, its probably that i'm not sharpening them appropriately

  • 0:49 looks like its made to kill.

  • @missingo3886

Viking sword based on the Suttun Hoo sword.

An 18" blade that is as fast as lightening and just as lethal.

  • @Conan568 willing to sell?

  • @missingo3886

Not until I make more steel.

    Thanks for asking.

  • @Conan568 When you do how much would it cost for a knife with these specs:

    20 cm long blade

    10 cm long handle (wood)

    damascus steel

engraved last name on the blade.

  • i've been trying to look for a good video on how to make a deer antler handle, i was quading last weekend and found a very large antler, and i reaaally want to make it into somthing, but cant find a good video at all on how to do it. Any susgestions or videos youve seen that could help?

  • @SinOfYesterd

Just start drilling until it fits.

  • @Conan568 no lathing, sanding, or anything needs be done with it?

  • @SinOfYesterd

Drill it until the tang will go through.

Go ahead and bend the tang if you have to.

When you get the tang through you can worry about squaring the end the abutt's the guard.

  • 0:32 i like, a lot! your very skilled. im making a sword out of wood at the moment, just this is really intresting. really really good job. :)

  • @theskyisfalling100

Thanks, good luck with your sword.

I've been working on mine for 15 years.

  • are those designs in the blade just from making them or what?

  • @brutalnessities1

Those designs are usually the layers of steel in these blades.

  • howd you do the finger guards on the handles did u make them?

  • @DCMWDC

You file them in, but I don't use them.

  • what steel or material did u use for the blue blade

  • @themightyman1998

It's not blue, it's gray from the acid bath.

  • how long have you made knives?

that was the finest knives I've seen!

  • @ammehmasne

    25 years, and thanks.

  • the best knife is your dog xD

  • @RockingOrange11

    Yeah Rocky's pretty cool.

  • Oxpho Blue.

  • at 0:18, how'd you make the blade blue? 0.0

  • Start your own shop man! ur gonna make some profit

  • @TheBrackNinja

I do have a great shop already.

    Thanks for watching.

  • nice knives u made!! u are good smith!
