How old is Kili? I recently rescued a Jenday Conure, he's nine years old. I would like to try doing some tricks with him, but would he respond to training now that he is older? He does seem a bit set in his ways, but will do just about anything for a sunflower seed.
@prasinikerkida no its a little ring that shows that the bird is legal, I think. If a parrot doesn't have that, then it was brought here illegally I think. Or that's what my mom told me when we had our parrot.
@Tacoflavoredpocky It's a band that the breeder used to tell that bird apart from the other chicks. It really means nothing to an owner, it was just a breeder's call number. I like to remove those from my parrots because they can cause problems later on.
@PartAwesome I would like to add that if you know the numbers/letters on the band you can use them to prove ownership of your bird if he ever escapes. Kind of like a serial number. :)
@123masterwar Oh i just figured it out its a budgie parakeet its so cute,He is very scared right now so i try to judge everything i do based on what i would think it would be like such as a random man grabbing me doesnt sound fun but do you think you could give me some tips?
@TheCookieSide Clicker makes a sound when pushed. The trainer makes the click when the animal presents he desired behavior correctly. It notifies the animal that it did the right thing and to expect a treat (because it always or usually gets treats at sound of clicker). This is important because sometimes it is impossible to give a treat to an animal in the middle of a trick so it lets it know it did the right thing while doing it and allows postponing the treat until after.
Hi, I got your email. thx love Kili and Duke! I tried it out with my parakeet Percy, but when i take him out of the cage, he sits for a minute and starts flying around. So... any tips?
@tiklovesaom Eh, the outside part was kind of stupid. She used to be clipped so I didn't think she could fly off outside and I was lucky. Since, her flight feathers have grown back and she flies all around my apartment. Come to me when I call her. I use a flight harness when I take her outside now. And now she can do a load of flighted tricks as well, see my newer videos.
I have a cockatiel and he is very loving but he doesn't want to do anything but go on your shoulder when i try and teach him tricks he just flys to ,y shoulder could anyone help me how to fix that problem ? please
@totalninjabanana Use going onto the shoulder exclusively as a reward for performing tricks. Don't let him on your shoulder any other time. That way he'll learn to do what you want if he is to get what he wants.
@kiliparrot oh my gosh its soooo cute... i have a parakeet and it took him a month to learn how to play dead.... do you think parakeets are better or cocatiels
@GameOnGlitter Birds are much more challenging to train, as they have the intelligence of a toddler and the will of one. Most dogs, when started early, warm right away to training. Birds have to see a point and have to want to learn.
im having trouble with getting my cockatiel to take treats from my hand at all ): how do you suggest i solve that? as soon as i put the treat on the table or in the cage or anywhere other than my hand he goes for it, any ideas?
@NightWing02041 am sure u can find it in any bird store just ask some employee. but actually u can also try to make the "click" sound with your tongue. the training is like ummm ur supposed to make the "click" whenever the bird completed the trick and right after that u give him some treat.
@ImABieberGrrl That little blue thing in his hands, (he puts it down once you can see it) it basically tells the bird that he did a good job and he can come get his reward. he does it after every trick, when he hears the click he stops doing the trick.
@lpsfangirl1 Of Course not, birds usually see the bird food and carefully and calmly take the food out of the hand without biting, if u keep shoving ur finger or hand in the bird's face or beak then it will try biting, but usually bird biting doesnt hurt. It only hurts if u have a big macaw or parrot. But i would say keep the bird food in ur hand and just calmly rest ur hand on the floor or out so the bird walks to ur hand and eats the food...
the actual effort is to make the parrot do these tricks without bribing with the reward. My macaw does all this and many without any expectation of reward. I put my whole energy to train him that way !
This video is hilarious (and also very touching--to see the trust your bird has in you). I have 4 lineolated parakeets; they are semi-tame (don't bite, but don't like to be touched by me) but I love them just as they are and I just let them hang out in their big cage together (I let them out to play, too). Tomorrow I am adopting a Senegal who is very shy and timid (history of neglect). I am going to read all the articles on your blog in order to learn how to make her comfortable with me.Thank
OMG that is so cool! especially the "waveing" trick! but i especiallier love how you can keep your bird outside safely with just a little ankle collar! can i train my 2 cockatiels to sit outside? please tell me! :D
