I Love The Temptations BUT I always loved the THE FOUR TOPS much more because they took more risks and experimented more with jazz and avante garde sounds. They weren't just structured on secular R&B rhythms and sound. The Four Tops added haunting choirs, strings, odd chord structures and such that also eventually influenced Marvin Gay to move in that direction. This song is one example of The Four Tops thinking outside of the box.
Lawrence Peyton and Sylvia Smith who began her career at Motown and joined Holland-Dozier-Holland's Invictus Records family as a member of the Glass House and later recorded an album for ABC Records and Qwest Records.
This is top drawer stuff.
