  • To die young is a waste. There has been no greater waste than Paul Kossoff.

  • paul kossoff... genius

what a band they must have up there

  • Beautiful song and great video tribute to the late Paul Kossoff.

  • l'un des plus émouvant et plus bel hommage rendu à ce magnifique guitariste qu'était Paul Kossoff par ses amis de Free - Paul on t'oublie pas tu es dans nos coeurs

  • i love free but this song never fails to make me sad and it will be th one played at my funeral in the how ever many years i got left!

  • Rest in peace, Paul :(

I love "Highway" because all tracks are magnificent and they are very sweet, too. Free are, in my opinion, the most underrated band of Blues Rock music! They are so fuckin' great!

Even if i'm just a young girl of sixteen, I can say that I love them with all my heart. They are a band that made me grow a lot. Thank you, Free!

  • GREAT music !

  • toon ,you hit the nail in the head mate ,they brought a lot more to the table ,for me the best free honest band who weren,t competeing against each other as musicians ,very much a band ,and what a voice .Mate you know your oinions {and im smashed lol}fair play .

  • Paul has such a beautiful tone to his voice. How amazing.

  • ...utterly ingenious!!...I mean Kossoff

  • Yes he was underrated but mostly because not everyone knew about Free back then...they should have played many tours in America. Also, another unrated British guitar player is Tony Hicks of The Hollies. And they didn't play outside of Britain enough either. The States was where you went to "make it".

  • thank you to whoever posted this song. I only came across it when i bought a Free DVD!! Such a beautiful song for a fantastic guitarist. RIP Paul Kossoff

  • free played st..louis 1971 kiel aud. kick ass blues

  • Paul you are sadly missed Brother.

    Such a talent.

For more of Paul's music pick up Jim Capaldi's " Oh How We Danced " Album on which Paul played .

An excellent Album selling used from $45 and up to new starting at $75.

Glad I got mine back in the day.

  • beautiful too bad heroin took over

  • Paul Kossoff . . absolute legend . . . RIP sir

  • One of the great guitarists, taken from us before his full potential could be realised. So sad.

  • Beautiful song indeed. Writing credits should also include Rodgers and Fraser though, according to the highway album.

  • thanks so much for putting this together. love kossoff, what a player !

  • Hey, just saw on WIkipedia that Koss is interred at Golders Green Crematorium. That's just down the road from me. Think i'll pop in there this week and pay respects from us Youtube lot. He was only 25 RIP.

  • So glad you took the time and care to put this together. Thanks.

  • One of the greatest ever, up there with Eric, Jimi and Pagey, able to say more with one note than the widdlers can with 100. Wring the soul out with that great vibrato Koss.

  • Koss is the greatest guitarplayer I´ve ever heard. R.I.P.

  • the best.soul emotion.just genius no one to touch him.

  • Beautiful song, Beautiful video.

  • Beautiful song, Beautiful video.

  • totally out of this world rock band, put their heart and soal into every performance they ever did, powerful music that really gets in deep, live on Free

  • Es ist ein sehr emotionaler Song den Roger gesungen hat. Er ist mir sehr nahe gegangen

und ich glaube Paul weiß, da wo er jetzt ist, das

es nur für ihn war. R.I.P great Paul Kossoff.

    LOVE YOU

  • Free: one of the best bands ever

  • RIP Paul Kossoff - the most underappreciated blues-rock guitarist out of the 1970s, possibly of all time.

  • Actually, I have to disagree. I can't imagine anyone who does not rate him as one of the greatest guitarists of the era.

  • @dudestr5552 I think Peter Green is

  • Remember there is a hard cover book on Free as well, Simon and Paul are wonderful people. We miss you Kozzie!

  • The composite of this band didn't last long...but their music will last forever for those of us that know what "Free" is

  • Right on.

  • pure essential free.

  • Rock n roll is a dangerous place .

  • yeah this will be one of the songs or many songs pumping out at my cremation righton R.I.P. paul you left a mark om many lives ,

  • This and Be My Friend at my crem. too !

  • Paul is gone but his music remains. These images of his short life are frozen in time, frozen in my mind. Thank you very, very much frozenfish91!

BTW Where did you get all these pics of Paul as a young boy? Is there a book? Heart-wrenching.

  • Hi, the clip shown is from a DVD called FREE-FOREVER FREE. A large amount of FREE clips on Youtube seem to be taken from it.Lots of footage of Free, and interviews with band members and Pauls brother Simon Kossoff,if you are a Free fan you will definately enjoy.Free, one of the best Rock/Blues bands ever, utter perfection.

  • strepitoso...paul era uno dei piu grandi e promettenti artisti..un personaggio mondiale...up the free!!!paul ci manchi!!!

  • a jueputa esta cancion me hace llorar cada vez que la oigo................

  • FREE - a unique band. The blend of Rogers, Kossoff, Kirk & Fraser was superb at all levels - their composition and performance will never be matched in my opinion. Great memories!

  • Awesome.

  • the last thing anyone is going to hear at my funeral is this song

  • Fuck....that song left me empty & sad , but glad that Koss gave us -what he did.

FREE ..what else is there to say ?

  • saw Free in a concert at Birmingham Town Hall around 1970,/71, watching this video brought back wonderful memories of a great band. Rest easy Paul Kossoff you will always be remembered by true music fans everywhere.

  • dunno if I commented before, but this was played at my friend's funeral...gone too soon mate....49 is no age x x x miss you x x x love you so x x x

  • MY warmest condolences to you..so sad to read your note...:(( take care and always be well, and remember your beloved friend..

  • free were around long before i was but i wish that wernt the case. i listen 2 them now nd drift off in my own little world. no other guitarist can hang on a note nd make it sound so powerful, kossoff your the man! nd rodgers vocals can make hairs stand on end. Thanx for the great music......

  • Kossoff we will not forget you

  • Beautiful and heartwrenching,Free, at their very best, one of the best Blues/Rock bands ever!!!

  • That made me cry.

  • it¨s crazy that my friends hate Free... i´ve listened to FREE since i were 10.. But back then i only listened to "all right now" and "fire and water"..

Free are Truely my favourite band overall.. Not even Kyuss is better. Love Free AND Paul. He have inspired me and my guitarr playing alot.

  • Sounds like you need some new friends.....

  • ehh wha?

  • Beautiful song, Free were the most soulful rock band ever.

  • On March 23rd 1976 I saw Man at Newcastle City Hall. At the end the DJ Andy Dunkley came on and said - 'How about a big hand for Man - and I've got announcement to make - someone that a lot of you have seen on this stage died earlier today - Paul Kossoff.

Paul Kossoff was - and still is - God in the North East. We all stood there silent after this announcement and there were girls crying - a really sad moment.

  • Paul Kossoff, Michael Bloomfield, Jimi Hendrix...just three of the gigantic musical talents lost to drugs. Imagine if they had not gone down that road, the joyful sound, the visions and the knowledge they might be sharing with us today. It pains me deeply and blackens my heart to this day and all the days of life that I have left.

  • How great is a band when the drummer writes a song like this....and he wrote Bad Co's "Anna" and " I'd Lie To You For Your Love" (Frankie Miller)

  • Eric Clapton went backstage and asked Kossoff how he got that vibrato

    True story.

  • Perfect......x

  • miss you Koss and Boz clearwater beach

  • My Most favourite Free song EVER! What a total waste of a brilliant talent - it must have been devastating for his family.

  • Yes, his dad David put together a stage show called Late Great Paul he performed in schools all around the country, telling kids what happened to Paul and warning them about the dangers of drugs. Lots of people still remember it making an impression on them.

  • never seen or heard this before and its made me cry, i suppose a 46 year old male should be past all that now but this song is a killer. Koss was so underated and it is such a waste. I hate drugs and pushers even more now

  • Takes my breath away....

  • beautiful song to such a talented person long may his memory live on

  • a beautiful song to such a talented person who is no longer with us it will remain like that for eternity

  • Plaintive, beautiful song, Kossoff's playing on all the early albums will stand for time immemorial. One of the true geniuses of the electric guitar. May you serenade the angels as you did those on earth. Sleep restfully.

  • Sad enough to end my day... cheers!

  • For John Leonard Thompson RIP we all loved ya mate.

Free were one of the greatest bands to ever record. Love this tune

  • I listen to this song every now and then when I'm feeling a little down and it helps even though it is so very very sad.

    God Bless you Koss RIP.

Thanks to the band as well for this wonderful legacy.

    I miss you Koss.

  • The lyrics say it all........sleep well Koss

  • Very sad..Paul was a great talent. Nice to see these early photos. I remember his dad very well. Thanks a lot to the drug peddlers......

    may you rot in hell.

  • Beautiful tribute to an incredible talent.

  • geoff=thanks for the long chats, so glad I met you, your passion was contagious, r i p

  • beautifull sentiments,a fitting tribute to one of the most gifted axemen we ever had, respect Koss.

  • couldn't remember the name of this song for ages..... just in memory of my mate who left a few years ago..... so glad i found it again! x (Kirsty x)

  • One of my favourite Free tracks. Played it to death when I finally managed to drum up the money to by Highway all those years ago. Thanks for posting it.

  • well Im an old lady but this song will be played at my funeral, its beautiful. If it isnt Ill haunt my son and daughter, from a 57 granma.

  • rock on ,lots of hugs

  • I wouldn't have thought of "Changes" had it not been mentioned. And Boz was in Bad Co. lol Just kiddin' folks, please no hate mail!

  • The best song that could be dedicated to Paul.

    I love you so-

    Paul, you are sadly missed.

  • sounds like Changes by Black Sabbath...wonder who wrote their song first ?!!!

    P.S. I SO love this song......V.SIMPLE , V. MOVING

  • Free released this song on "Highway" and according to the linernotes the song was written in 1969...way before Changes by Sabbath that was released on their Volume 4 album in 1972

  • Highway came out in 1970 whereas Black Sabbath's Changes is on Vol. 4, which came out in 1972. I still think it's a coincidence though but they do sound similar.

  • made me Cry...without a doubt my favourite player....next to Angus Young

  • oh and fish you know how too pull the heartstrings, thankyou again xx

  • frozen thankyou its beautiful.xxxxx

  • Doesn't the riff of that song resemble the one from Nazareth's - Changes? They've stolen it!

  • not sure what you mean, which band has stolen the riff

  • As the Free's song was recorded in 1970, and Nazareth's in 1972, I suggest It was Ozzy who might have stolen this riff.

  • Black Sabbath

  • Sorry but what has Ozzy got to do with Nazereth?

  • Ozzy was in Black Sabbath, not Nazareth. And if you are comparing this tune to Sabbath's 'Changes', you might want to get your ears checked, they sound nothing alike.

  • I agree I was just about to say that they're totally different speeds, and tunes.

  • Does anyone have the MP3 of this song they could hook me up with. There was recently a death in the family, and I want to put together a tribute like this one.

    I would greatly appreciate it.

  • ... do a yt search for mp3 download ... there are instructions in a vid on how to download from yt for mp3 ... hope that helps ... don't have time at this moment to look for it but will if i get the time

  • This band made me the musician and writer I am today. No-one has made as much of an impact on me as these guys, their songs and their story.

  • Free, Bad Company and Paul Rodgers are still the best favorites in my life. I always love this song. It's a nice one.

    I wanna have that song.

  • Greatest fucking rock band in the world - dont get the credit that they deserve. Cheers PK - thank you

  • bang on.tight rhythm, class vocals, class guitar and soulful lyrics.add on the name of Free and were all there.

  • Sad,Sad,Sad.

Paul Kossoff was a lovely shy, unassuming guy.

When he died it broke his father David's heart. So much so,that for the rest of David's life he visited schools warning young children against the evils of drugs.

    R.I.P. Koss

  • Great song to a great guitarist.

  • ive searched for this song for years i seen it once on a documentry and didnt no the name of it thanks for putting this on youtube

  • It isn't just a song, along with the video it has become an epitaph to a sad life. People feel moved and want to pay their respects and share their memories. Is that a problem?

  • Take the song and apply it to your life; people you've lost. I have it. Makes me wanna cry. I need to adjust my Will to include play some Kossoff songs at my funeral. Kossoff was connected to something that jerks it out of the rest of us when we hear his wailing guitar and the lyrics. Geezers like me feel it.

  • dear vampireazrial,

Yes it has that power to make you think of all the people you loved and had to say goodbye to. It reminds me of their other lovely song, 'soon I will be gone' which brings a tear to my eye too. Has anybody put that song on here?

  • probly the most real song ive ever heard...i love kossoff and free

  • GREAT SONG MAKES ME CRY EVERY TIME.

  • R.I.P. Koss. You were a diamond. Your music lives on forever.

  • Ain't that the true dude. Probably the most underrated guitar player of all time.

  • just a few more days and it will have been 32 years since pauls untimely passing.when all these tv shows talk of talent i think back to free, talent they wouldnt know it if it bit em in the arse,r.i.p. mr kossoff

  • I know how you feel, I hate when entertainment shows don't bother to mention anniversary's of some of the greatest rock gods of all times deaths. Such as; Paul Kossoff, Bon Scott, Jimi Hendrix, Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and so many others. Bon Scott's death went without any mention, and I highly doubt if Paul Kossoff's gets any recognition.

  • Those were the days. Those were the days. Like someone else posted on another Free vid; makes you wanna take a trip back in time and hear it all again. Live. Once more. Koss had the gift to make that guitar speak to you. Cry out.

  • I saw Free at Manchester University in '71 or '72. I was right at the front, crushed against the stage. Fraser and Koss had 4 Marshall stacks each! My ears were ringing for 3 days afterwards. It was, and remains, the best concert I ever saw. My favourite singer, guitarist, bassist and drummer. Raw music. Never to be forgotten.

  • Beautiful. Thanks for posting. Makes me choke up.

  • sumthin in my eye...

  • i cried when i heard the news that you died

  • Paul, and Free, WE loved you SO, many happy memories of this time and much missed friends, thanks frozen fish.

  • There will never be another. What a shame. What a waste. Paul is one a few guitarists that makes me tear up...Miss you Koss.

  • mmm that's my baby. Perm and all.

  • What a great tune. This could have only been released when it was. I was just born when Free broke up for good.

They were/are a huge influence on me. I'll always wonder what could have been had Koss stayed with us. I'm glad still have the music to remind us how great he truly was.

  • R.I.P. KOSS

  • moving montage and great song - the late David Kossoff, Paul's father, tribute Late Great Paul is available on VHS, anyone seen it?

  • love this song, possibly the best song Free ever did, always makes me fell like crying, and makes me think of my father, thanks for posting it.

  • thank u very much...frozenfish91

  • No prob ! cheers

  • This is probably my favourite ballad from Free (tied with the live version of "Be My Friend" and "Heavy Load"). Free's fourth album, entitled 'Highway', harbours the band's finest ballads, imo. Beautifully sung by Paul Rodgers (he's unsurpassable in the ballad department, imo) . . . the best Rock singer ever, imo. Very fitting song for the video.

  • So beautiful song. is so sad at kossoff die so young

  • Well I seem to be hooked on this video. This is really moving.Haven't felt this strong about a guitarist in quite some time. And I have had some heavy musical insperations. The late 60's early 70's Stones,Hendrix. Two of the main reasons I started playing the guitar at age 13....But this is really to the heart and soul of rock-n-roll. Free forever!! Long live Paul Kossoff!!!!

  • Fantastic!! Kossoff was such a soulfull Guitarist...Strong stage presence.Bueatiful video.I remember Free as a young child, and even at that age these guys floored me!!Wish I could have seen Kossoff play live.....Paul Kossoff forever!!!!!(Thanks for the playing "Koss"....Miss ya Brother.

  • This is my MOST favourite song by Free. It is also on their 'Songs of Yesterday' complation of 5 CDs. Makes me cry everytime!

  • very sad song, played it at my fathers funeral, sad but such a nice song

  • Free - simply one of the best 70's bands! For me they are in the same league as Jimmy Hendrix, and the Rolling Stones. Magical, and brings a tear to one's eye - such good lyrics - expertly sung with such emotion by Paul Rodgers. Paul Kossoff strangling such beautiful sounds out of the Gibson Les Paul! Simon Kirke with every single drum pitch tuned to perfection - and all held together by the magical bass of Andy Frazer!

  • Yes it is Free and on one of the albums. I think on the Highway album from memory

  • Yes, Highway. My favourite band ever.

  • This is a very nicely made video, very heartfelt. Thanks. Is this a song from Free?

  • thank you for posting this...it almost makes me cry :'( oooh paul...you were such a great musician...

    thank you frozen
