Are they old lathes? I always thought there should be a cover that pulls over the chuck, that has to be in place before you can actually switch it on. making it impossible for this kind of incident to occur. If there aren't any then maybe they should fit one! Always remember our lathes at school had these covers on. Think maybe a health and safety assessment should be carried out immediately. Kids will always do stupid things regardless of mentality. Fit Safety covers with cutouts fitted!
@markg0nmy Yes, there should be guarding. If not around the chuck, then definately at the rear of the machine. Maybe it was removed for some reason. An unguarded machine (especially in an educational establishment) is a lawyers dream. Laws vary from country to country, though.

Not turning fast, but it's stronger than you are (dumbass) , it's a bad idea to leave the chuck key in because it might get thrown out, or catch stuff like your hand (dumbass) or your clothing (dumbass), and, oh yes, it will wrap you around the machine (dumbass).

To stop an accident we only need to brake the chain at one link. For example if this kid had been paying attention in class, or any of his class mates had been paying attention this accident would likely have been averted. I think of this dumbshit everyday at work. Not sure why anyone would think this is funny, who in their right mind wants to see someone they work with get hurt like that? I would have to fire the dummy caught in the lathe, the moron laughing in the background, the guy holding the camera because he just stands there and does nothing, and then have a safety meeting with the rest of the shop. It's hard to make good parts when a guys leg is stuck in the lathe.

Are they old lathes? I always thought there should be a cover that pulls over the chuck, that has to be in place before you can actually switch it on. making it impossible for this kind of incident to occur. If there aren't any then maybe they should fit one! Always remember our lathes at school had these covers on. Think maybe a health and safety assessment should be carried out immediately. Kids will always do stupid things regardless of mentality. Fit Safety covers with cutouts fitted!

@markg0nmy Yes, there should be guarding. If not around the chuck, then definately at the rear of the machine. Maybe it was removed for some reason. An unguarded machine (especially in an educational establishment) is a lawyers dream. Laws vary from country to country, though.

A perfect example of how things go wrong on a lathe. Not turning fast, but it's stronger than you are (dumbass) , it's a bad idea to leave the chuck key in because it might get thrown out, or catch stuff like your hand (dumbass) or your clothing (dumbass), and, oh yes, it will wrap you around the machine (dumbass).

To stop an accident we only need to brake the chain at one link. For example if this kid had been paying attention in class, or any of his class mates had been paying attention this accident would likely have been averted. If the shop instructor had been in the shop while these kids were f-ing around he could have put a stop to this.
So what happened instead? Looks like a broken leg, a lawsuit, higher insurance premiums, and the end of the program.
