They housed eight gas chambers and forty-six ovens that could dispose of some 4,400 corpses per day. Trains would arrive at the camp and those most fit—approximately 10-30 percent of the arrivals—would be selected for a work detail. The remaining prisoners were sent to the gas chambers.

@WhiteRavenHawk - There were roughly 12 ovens and EACH oven had 3 muffles which could house one body. No doubt about it. Based on coal shipments to Auschwitz it is estimated 80,000 were cremated. As to gassings, you need to try harder, so far, not a shred of forenic evidence exists to support the gassing cliams, which was a Russian supplied hoax. I have been to all 6 Polish camps, so I have forgotten 1000 times more than you will ever know. PBS is wrong.

I watched this series just some 10 years ago on VHS for the first time and although I have read and watched a lot of books/documentaries about WW2 and its atrocities, this series made me REALIZE the past for the first time instead of only knowing about it. I was 9 so my parents didn´t let me watch it ´cause it was too violent. It was so successfull, that it was repeated. They let me watch it this time. @kenfig You have to understand that this was the FIRST time that the Holocaust had been presented in dramatic form on television in a serious way (not like the Twilight Zone episodes). They couldn't make it too hard to watch and were treading on new ground. What they did do successfully was to introduce the Holocaust to America. I watched this show as an 8th grader and became hooked on the subject. I now teach world history to high school students. This program is tame, but powerful too!

Many, many thanks for this upload. I was about 14 when this series first aired in Gemany and it was only by this series, that I learned about the Holocaust. If I remember correctly, the term"Holocaust" was first used back then, before, it was called "the genocide committed to the jewish people". In the aftermath of "Holocaust", our TV and media were flooded with documentations, etc. about this issue. I think although the story is fictional, it covers the main aspects and the actors are stunning.

I am very glad of the oppoturnity to see this again - I saw it on the television in 1978 - or at least those parts I was allowed to watch.

However some of the historical mistakes are glaring now e.g. talk of the Nuremburg laws (which were hastily put together in 1935), Hindenburg still alive, aggressive talk of Poland - Germany's ally then etc.. As I recall it gets worse so I won't dwell on them any longer.

Overall, the historical accuracy is not bad at all by the generally abysmal standards of television, but it is a pity they were so sloppy at fact-checking. In this opening scene, for example, it would have been easy to refer to Hindenburg in the past tense or even move the date back to 1934 when Hindenburg was still alive

Of course you are comparing and unless one knows what you are comparing it to then it is hard to say one way or the other.

In my opinion the historical accuracy of this film is extremely abysmal, a couple of mistakes - OK but this is full of them.

On the other hand the directors could argue the mistakes were in the book - which they are.

But it was this film that put the Shoah into people's minds.

I am grateful that it was posted, I watched it in one go in bed after falling off my bike.

According to Wikipedia, "the teleplay was written by novelist-producer Gerald Green, who LATER adapted the script into a novel" [my CAPs added]. The series was certainly influential in Germany where its basic message -how through many incremental steps a great civilized country came to perpetrate one of the greatest horrors of all times- survived intact and had a large positive impact, despite the historical errors. Even today the series still merits viewing, but the mistakes need to be noted.

In Germany a call centre was opened to take messages. One caller said words to the effect of 'What happened to those people was bad, but it was necessary to protect the race. Heil Hitler.'

The "Heil Hitler" types were not going to be cured by this or anything on TV. What I think did change (reduce) was the sentiment (to the effect of): "This was bad, but we weren't involved, we had no idea it was going on" and "it was like what America did to the Indians" or what the Brits did to Dresden. In the meantime, the mistakes in this TV series are probably more apparent now than in '78, but in part because people were inspired to study the actual history.

David Warner the actor chosen to play Heydrich seems a little too old for the role. Reinhard Heydrich was born in 1904 and died in 1942 at the age of 38, i dont think the actor here was a good choice for Heydrich.

When it comes to WOII, this is the most shocking movie ever made. Many scene's actually happend according to the Eichmann trial. Everthing from de the Kristalnacht to the gaschambers, how it all started and why, you can see in this masterpiece. Many former SS-men commited suicied after seeing this movie. This production shows us 2 sides of WOII, how someone makes a carreer and how others where victomiced in a world beyond the point of no return.

I studied Jewish Studies at university as well as a whole seminar on the Second World War, I watch every documentary I can find - even the revisionist ones - and none of them convinced me that the Holocaust was NOT an atrocity, a black spot on humankind's history. So, let me get this straight. Your one major beef with the documentation is the Six Million number? Somehow the tragedy is less great if the number is incorrect? Where exactly does a less large number NEGATE the FACT of the Nazis systematically eradicating an entire race? Besides, I think the six million figure is wrong also. I think the total is even higher. Hell, my mother's family stopped counting after 80. STOPPED COUNTING. Stop focusing your life on a number and start looking at the people.

Their family was not so lucky. To see you speak like this about people that I KNOW died in the Holocaust, that were killed by the Nazis, stills my blood. You weren't alive then. They were. There are numbers of photographs and films (taken by SS and military personnel), testimonies of survivors, Allied liberators as well as from many perpetrators themselves and from Nazi documentation media and their war-time propaganda. Not to mention the minutes from the Wannsee conference.
