  • Thanks for the info. I did not know that these actors had died. They created something that will live forever. Have they done anything else I should be looking for?

  • I've loved Sherlock Holmes for many years. Loved the old movies with Basil Rathbone, before I read any of the stories. When I first saw Jeremy Brett play the character on P.B.S., I became inthralled with the character and would not miss an episode. I don't know much about you, Jeremy. Don't know what you're doing now. But you gave me an appreciation for this iconiclastic character that had surpassed me prior to your portrayal of him. You made Mr. Holmes come alive for me. You'll be hard to beat.

  • @SuperJneel Jeremy Brett died a number of years ago. It broke my heart because he was my favorite Holmes of all time

  • Comment removed

  • @SuperJneel P.S.- I believe Edward Hardwick (Watson) also passed away more recently.

  • Jeremy Brett is by far the best Sherlock Holmes there has been. also i find the new films very insulting to the legacy of Sherlock Holmes.

  • Anyone else see the older version with Basil Rathbone as Holmes??? I enjoy both actors very much.

  • Absolutely, RDJ made Holmes fit his character but . Brett developed the Sherlock Homes character .;

  • Dude Jeremy Brett WAS Sherlock Holmes

  • Brandy! :D

  • It was 1985/86. I was 9/10 years old When I saw this on TV for the first time . Thank you soo much from Portugal !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Genious !!!!!

  • It's not to say the deductive sleuth is not present here, but he should not have to be parsed out of the excess, however entertaining the latter.

Therefore, I think it not false modesty that Mr. Brett himself forthrightly honoured Basil Rathbone as THE Sherlock Holmes, whatever the defects (though roundly enjoyable) of the 40's series surrounding him. Holmes as 'masterful', efficient, brusque but not curt, naturalistic in dialogue, with a special economy of action only Rathbone portrayed.

  • Conan Doyle was quite clear about his motivations about Holmes: detective work based on deductive reasoning, in contrast to the fictional detectives of his day.

A series losing that core thread—however true to the books—in atmospheric excess, stilted dialogue, manneristic acting, high drama more suited to Shakespeare or Jane Eyre, Holmesian eccentricities distorted into a distracting bundle of borderline-personality disorders, bellowings and near-whispers, has missed the point, however elegant.

  • @Tubeistdan hear hear!

  • I love the episode where sherlock's brother shows. Does anyone konw the title? Thanks!

  • @jinliangwei Mycroft first appears in the 'Greek Interpreter' and is also in the 'Bruce Partington Plans'... both are excellent episodes.

  • This is awesome!! Holmes is the coolest character ever! This series is much better than the movie by Downey, the movie is good though.

    Thanks a lot for uploading!

  • Jeremy Brett was BORN for this role as Sherlock Holmes.

  • Just for curiosity, what exactly was in that silvery tube that Watson was holding? One sniff of it and that man woke right up!!

  • @bluedust11 It was probably smelling salts which I believed included sal ammonia the strong smell of which would usually rouse someone from a faint.

  • Dr.Huxtable was said to be the doctor that was whith Holmes in his dying moments.

  • @Wildave007 Silly, Holmes is still alive now :)

  • @Wildave007 In which book was this mentioned?

  • Jeremy Brett is the best Sherlock holmes!!!!! He has got everything to make the perfect Sherlock Holmes, his expressions, his language....Just Awesome!!!!!!!! Love Jeremy Brett!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What would Holmes and Watson do without Mrs. Hudson :)

  • What is this upperclass-twitty thingy? I think when he deal with this upperclass smart-asspish like the duke and this headmaster - he acts accordingly. I think he is wise and think objectively when he is cracking a case. Jeremy Brett give Holmes a personality - shows his weakness and strength and make him human at least for me to relate to him which I can't find in the book.

  • viva el peru, pais libre e independiente

  • I think I like Brett the best because he really cared to portray Holmes and not to make it his own character. There needs to be at least one faithful adaptation for the screen, and he is it.

  • @cornwallace Yup. "This" sherlock holmes fits exactly like my own imagination of holmes

  • now this is cinematography

  • Well... as I live and breath if it isn't Henry Gordon Jago!

  • LOL, you have penned 'Not as good as the book' in every single description! Come now, that's hardly fair to say that a generous 30 minute production can't *occasionally* improve upon, let's say, a 13 page story? (which I think is indeed the case with 'Scandal in Bohemia')

  • That "HA!" at 5:05

  • Holmes loves it when the bloke passes out

  • To me he was the Sherlock Holmes, period.

  • Brandy is the cure for everything.

  • WOW I've not seen these in a long time...good memories. Thanks man :D

  • English in the Victorian period was way more classy and devoid of cheap slangs unlike today. I wish to be teleported to that period in England.

  • honeslty i still think basil rathbone and nigel bruce did it the best!!!

  • the closest thing to"elementary, my dear watson" in the books is "elementary my fellow"

  • i love how at the same time sherlock gets up, that guy falls down

  • AND AGAIN WITH THE BRANDY!!!!!

dont try to tell me other wise i know damn well it's brandy.

  • @GlassCtiy Brandy actually is beneficial to drinkers as a mild source of antioxidants.

  • For me Brett was the best Holmes ever!

  • @ ForeverTheBeat7..I respectfully disagree with the RDJ/Jude Law version. I think it was a good movie, just lousy Holmes. Agreed on Mr. Brett however.

    Regards

  • Pemberley! 5:25

  • Brett was the ideal Sherlock Holmes.

  • Mr. Holmes is a very arrogant individual. ;)

  • What is the piece of music that is being sung when they go to the school?

  • @AGDIRGIA It is called "Libera Me" written by Patrick Gowers for the soundtrack and can be found on the soundtrack cd and on his choral and organ music cd.

  • In the books, Sherlock isn't this "smart-ass-ish" and upperclass-twitty.

  • @Jammed9000 lol thats not true, he can be an absolute snob sometimes. He gets in these moods but youre right that most of the time he is more cordial. I think there has always been something royal about Sherlock, he holds himself like a cat.

  • @tiemedown

Yeah, but in the books he is only a snob to people who deserve it. (And that's quite rare)

But it seems for this show that he is a permanent upper-class twit.

  • @Jammed9000 lol watch the earlier episodes, he is rarely so blunt with the earlier watson to counter him. he's always been a bit aloof though, in one scene I recall him being quite rogue-ish with watson in a snobbish way. but the man is fluid so youre right, he can turn it on and off. But he is a bit cold and I think brett conveys that well.

  • Jeremy Bretts ACTING IS AS ELEGANT AS A CATS MOVEMENTS

    beautiful to watch

  • Jeremy Brett brought a new dimension to the role of Holmes which was really very good, and no doubt coloured by his own severe bouts of depression. He was an excellent actor and is underrated in my view.

  • " The Duchess returned to her father's Palazzo in Venice..."

     is it me????? *_^

frankly...I would have lost my mind for a British man like Jeremy Brett...

not for that awful red hair man....!!!!

  • 'You may have heard of it...?'

    'No.'

  • i gotta say i love the guy ritchie version of sherlock holmes veeeerrry much and RDJ and jude law are genius together but jeremy brett has this something that makes him THE sherlock holmes...

  • @ForeverTheBeat7 I agree that the acting in that movie was good, and that it was a pretty good movie overall. However, my feelings are mixed, as I also feel that it is a very poor adaptation that never really feels like a Holmes story.

Jeremy Brett is not only a superior Holmes, but the entire Granada series is very faithful to Doyle's style. The series also brilliantly recreates a very plausible version of Victorian London.

  • @ForeverTheBeat7 i love RDJ but i hate guy ritchie's version =) just felt like sharing..

  • @lovycat29 yeah i get your point, its not really like sherlock holmes right? its more like something new...

  • when I read the books, I can't help but imagine brett as holmes. I loved guy ritchie's version, and RDJ, but when doyle writes about holmes, that is brett

  • @lordrandal90 Totally agree. Best regards from Portugal.

  • I especially like the boy's Choir, they sang Holmes' drama Theme in vibration, with middle Age's feeling!

About the show!It is not allowable to talk so loudly as Jeremy as Holmes in the school labby!

  • I love Jeremy Brett's facial tics....

  • Did he say the Abergavenny murders? Love that place!

  • i agree ..as he always said "elementry" my dear watson......

  • @manojnanda001 actually, as he never said 'elementary, my dear watson. one of those famous quotes never actually existed. in the books, anyway.

  • How much was £5000 in those days?

  • @kitzlaihel In 1885 (I think that's about when the stories were set) it would equal just over 500,000 pounds today ($US740,000). A lot of money in other words.

  • Thanks.

  • Jeremy Brett : probably one of the best actor we ever had :)

  • I love Jeremy Brett in this role. R.I.P. to the greatest Sherlock Holmes on screen and on stage. I love his unique energy I love, and adore the following moments in this clip:

    3:25 (his face is perfect!)

6:45 (his gestures are amazing! and so much like Holmes it's scary.. :] )

7:43 (epic face, "im so annyoed with you!)

    love this ..!

  • @firetrucksnfishcakes No way, Basil Rathbone was the ultimate Holmes!

  • What ever happened to the frist Dr. Watson?

  • @CheeseGrater107 David Burke, the first Watson, left the show after "Adventures" in order to spend more time with his family. I believe he also personally recommended Edward Hardwicke to take over as Watson.

  • Just saw this episode on PBS - thank you so much for uploading. Mr. Brett really is phenomenal.

  • Watson is in his own right is a fantastic doctor..he doesn't get alot of credit for that.

  • 5:27 -- Holderness hall is actually Chatsworth house in Derbyshire.

  • With Brett gone, the person I think that could play Holmes is Jeremy Irons.

  • @Poplin2412 no at all...

Sherlock Holmes died with Jeremy Brett....

Nobody else could act this part as him....

  • @ChiaraMichela you are right in every way. Robrt D. Jr. did horribly in the role and showed the public the completely hollywood Sherlock Holmes that was never meant to be.

  • @firetrucksnfishcakes I completely agree with you. RDJ even copied some of Jeremy's own mannerisms in his portrayal of Holmes (the flickering half-second smile, the flamboyant hand-gestures, the manic energy). It's like he himself is acknowledging the fact that JB was the BEST SHERLOCK HOLMES THERE WILL EVER BE -- and he himself was simply a wanna-be.

  • Glad to see people keeping the Cosby Show jokes to a minimum. Sherlock Holmes certainly doesn't need that.

  • So the two doctors can picnic away! XD

  • Agreed, I love the start of this episode..Holmes deductive reasoning at its finest...executed with the patience and grace of a leopard and the eloquence of the finest wordsmith...

"........a small occurence perhaps, but only small I think, in the way a vibrating needle may signal an earthquake...."

  • Ah, Holmes at his dismissive best! I love how Brett plays up the detective's cocky side so well.

"My proudest moment, Mr Holmes! Ever since Blackwells published 'Huxtable's Sidelights on Horace' - a notable little success in its day, you may have heard of it!"

"No. How old is the boy?"

Poor Dr Huxtable, he looked so pleased too!

  • @msuprand faggotB without B

  • Ha! Almost half the letters of the alphabet!

  • I love the opening theme to this show. :)

  • I think this is a fair interpretation - as close to the books as you can get. And yes, BBC dramatizations keep closely to the words and it makes it more palatable. Never watch a movie that is 'based on the bestseller, XXXX' They are never as satisfying as the real thing...

  • Movies are never as good as the books so I just go with it now. I'm to the point where I just watch it for entertainment purposes only. The BBC versions are more accurate though. You should check them out. The one with Peter Cushing.

  • anybody know of the hindi translation of this..now a days aired in Fox history in India?

  • thx for posting

  • BAD SPAMMERS. Why would you do this to my Sherlock Holmes? :(

  • @nicghillian do what? what did they do? who are" they "?

  • this is a tv series not a movie, you wankers

  • @guittarTarenverma go and suck some whre else you bloody fool

  • the boys choir is stuningg

  • one of my favorite episodes. the locations are breathtaking

  • One of the best episodes of the series.I also love many of the scenes between Holmes and Watson in this one.And the theme music is beautiful and haunting, fits well with the story.Jeremy is the best Holmes without a doubt.I don't know about anyone else but it's him I see when I read the books.Great series thanks for posting this episode.

  • Another reason I love YouTube: Taken in the aggregate, this series showed the most true-to-Doyle adaptations, ever.

I will salute the Rathbone/Bruce films for being extremely well-acted and -made, fun to watch (and, due, in no small part to WW II England being not that different from Victorian England), surprisingly faithful to the plots and the mood of the originals, even though they were set in what was then (with two exceptions) a contemporary time.

  • And who would you have selected for the part? Any mention of RDJ wins you a kewpie doll and a raspberry.

  • Cushing was memorable as was Rathbone in his own way although Nigel Bruce will likely never be surpassed as the worst Watson ever.

As for Brett he brought a humanity to Doyle's detective and came closer to capturing him than just about anyone else.

  • I am assuming Bruce was that white haired bumbling Watson that was Rathbones sidekick. I agree completely with that. Brett may have come the closest to what Doyle had in mind, I grant that, but still, he's just too bland in my opinion. There was some Russian Sherlock Holmes that was pretty good too.

  • Livanov? well he was good although I'll always take Brett over him as far as a fidelity to Doyle's character goes and capturing his essence,

plus having the whole Russian Symphonic Orchestra blasting away whenever Livanov entered 221B never really worked for me..

  • Brett certainly portrayed Holmes as a logical thinking machine like Doyle portrayed him in the original stories although he also let his humanity show through especially concerning his friendship with Watson unlike any other actor who has ever portrayed Holmes IMHO and he is someone quite a large number of Holmes fans feel will always be the essential Sherlock Holmes.

  • I disagree about Bruce: An amiable bumbler in most of them (Watson was anything but), he was absolutely perfect in "The Hound of the Baskervilles," the middle third of which is his, and exactly as Doyle portrayed him.

  • This guy paying Holmes has the PERFECT voice.

  • lol just as good as the books

  • I found this so touching! Sherlock Holmes lying asleep in the sofa. He mast have had a hard job just before. And then that other man is there, just to call his help for a new problem. Has Sherlock ever a moment done to work. He's not a machine that can work endlessly

  • i just watched another episode on the TV. now i am addicted to the TV show! :P

  • Thank you for posting this sequence. Having read the majority of Doyle's series, I confess that I had not yet stumbled upon this one. As any good Holmes story, it leaves the viewer puzzled and guessing until the very end.

  • My god!

Brett will surely turn around in his grave having so many admirer...and that without Dr. Watson!

Who or what will save him ?

    Perhaps the russian version hahahaha

  • Oh what I would give for a mrs Hudson always there with a plate of food or a helping hand I bet she was a knockout when she was young

  • Jeremy was the best Holmes. I only wish they would have filmed Valley of Fear

  • Brett was a great Holmes. To me, he was far more compelling than any of the others I saw, Rathbone, Cushing, Williamson, etc. Having read all the Holmes stories, I'd go so far as to say Brett was even sort of better, more interesting, than the character imagined by Conan Doyle

  • Jeremy Brett will always be the Holmes for me, such a legend and an amazing actor. He really makes you feel that Holmes existed more than just in our hearts. Love him so much :D

  • Brilliant.

  • The client stumbles in and collapses. It's a classic opening to a private eye story. At least the fellow does't have a knife sticking out of his back!

  • I know it's silly, but every time I hear Sherlock Holmes say 3:36; it makes me giggle.

  • I keep getting a mental picture of sherlock holmes showing up at the Huxtable residence. That would be an interesting episode!

  • I wish I had a Mrs. Hudson to make picnics for me.

  • God, Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes is definitely one of those ten real-or-fictitious people I would invite to my dinner party- right up there with Jesus Christ and Woody Allen!

  • @herodotus53

Jesus and Mohammed would be MUCH more fun than Woody Allen!

  • thank you 4 putting these on here for us.

    shima

  • Wait a minute. I know that Holmes' grandma's sister was a French artist. But I never know that it affects Holmes' pronounciation of 'r'.

He speaks a lot of 'rrrr' like occurrrence, vibrrrating, rrretain, rrrrun of his feet. Is it because of his French blood or something?

  • Actually, Brett had difficulty pronouncing the "r" correctly in his youth (I think it is called rhotacism or something). However he practised enough to improve his pronunciation, so that it is hardly noticeable.

  • After you said that, I searched for Jeremy Brett in wikipedia and you're right! I can't believe he made that much sacrifice for Holmes.

Not to mention his '.....77-page "Baker Street File" on everything from Holmes' mannerisms to his eating and drinking habits.....' and his '......started dreaming about Holmes, and the dreams turned into nightmares......'.

Such a legend. Is he our wonderful Sherlock or what?

  • It's amazing what some actors go through to act well their part. That's a sign that he was a great actor, I think.

  • You kidding me? I love it when he rolls his R's - it's fun hearing him roll his R's. And you are mistaken about the artist as well. His grandma was a sister of Vernet, his great-uncle and the French artist. I'm studying up in his family tree, so I know.

  • An ASTOUNDING performance by Brett, as usual.

And what's more, to make it all the more remarkable, this is in the third and last series he did as Holmes, when his health was fading fast and he was in terrible shape...

RIP Jeremy Brett- you live on in every fan of Holmes heart.

  • This is part of the "Return of Sherlock Holmes"--after this he did the "Casebook" and the "Memoirs"--so about five more years as Holmes after this point. The saddest part is you can how radically his appearance changes in just a year...makes the later episodes hard to watch, for me. It's like watching him fade away right in front of you. He was SO good. There will never be a better Holmes.

  • No, he wouldn't.

  • Jeremy Brett became a legend in such a role and no one equals him. He s the character in person who s turned into reality.

  • @ken73al I agree with you totally.

  • I didnt know bill cosby was a pasty english guy in disguise

  • I was introduced to the Holmes stories with the old Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce movies, and I thought was were excellent...then I saw this Granada series with Brett and its much better. Jeremy Brett is my favorite actor of all time
