Yes he did. But Warren actually made alterations, and added some additional lyribs. But Mitch Albom had the original ideal. Warren just embellished. Thank you.
Thanks Ed: We were both big "Zevon fans" . When you have an IQ of 160 like Warren had, his song writing was prolific. Warren used expletives, that many average rock listeners wouldn't understand. That's why he never received the recognition like his contemporaries like Glenn Frye, and Don Henley did. His songs actually told a story like this song did. The best hockey song of alltime.
Another example of how wide a horizon Warren had in his song subjects. Warren loved history, and sports. His father, "Stumpy Zevon'' was a boxer at one time in his life. He later became a mobster. Warren had a rough upbringing. H was handed money by his Father, and living on his own at 16. Warren was brilliant. He was truly one of the exceptional rock lyricists of the 70's, 80's, and 90's. An unsung hero of rock.
@lockwoodisafaggot why? Despite the underlying message of the song it's a humourous song and a great story to be enjoyed however you want... laughter included.
your screen name and your attitude makes me worry you're the kind of idiot who will waste most of their life hating before realizing you're gay.you'll be a bore. and you'll wonder why you can't keep a relationship. you'll alternate hating your parents until you realize it is you. sigh. i've met a hundred of you.
I was there that night at the TLA. Great show, as always. Caught Warren a few times when he rolled through town. He was (and remains) one of my heroes.
Now it's easy to see that Mitch Albom's lyrics (although not intentionally) mirrored Warren's own experience. Warren saw the "flashing red light" of outpouring appreciation of his immense talent at the final moments of his existence.
Also, Warren took an intermission during this show (unusual) which signified things sadly to come.
I love this song!! It actually inspired me to write a song about backyard ice rinks and hockey. Don't think I would've wrote my song until I read about Kevin Smith's movie project. Search "The Backyard Rinc. Song" on Youtube! to check it out! Thanks!

Total genius. Name another song that puts you on the edge of your seat, wondering if the hero will score. In a song. He does this in a song. Funny, great choice of words. Masterful. This guy is in the same league as Dylan, Springsteen, Simon in my opinion. In certain areas, maybe better than all of them.
I'm not into hockey at all, still the song tells a moving story. Thumbs up and also thanks to Californication, without the series I would never have discovered Zevon's music.
i have been a zevon fan since the 80's..can remember when I first heard "working in a factory' na dthinking holy shit that is me...was floored when I heard this song as a proud Canadian,,had this image of Warren as a hard partyin california type whom would not have a clue re hockey..should have realized the man was a freaking genius!!!
I've never thought that this song was funny but sad instead. It's probably the story of many aspiring hockey players who dream of being true players but are disappointed to be told that instead all they can do is fight. I think those people laughing in the audience don't really get it.
I first heard this song when I saw Warren Zevon perform it on David Letterman's show and instantly loved it. I have been searching for the video of that performance ever since with no luck. Anyone know where I could view it online?
@yrb37: glad u like it. I can't believe so many people have watched and commented on the little video I put together. People seem to like the cool, rarely heard live version of the song with all the screaming going on. It's got a real hockey aura about it!
@hwyisalive love the description- its amazing how Warren could take something as seemingly simple as a story about a hockey player and make it seem so much more meaningful.
Cool, I actually lived in Big Beaver, down by the borderline (6 miles from the border) for six years. was 50 people there then, down to less than 15 now.

this song is incredible for anyone who loves hockey. imagine waiting that long for your opportunity to light the lamp. i picture buddy picking up a rebound in the high slot and beating the goalie high glove side perfectly.
@fitedamann89 i hope he isent gonna use sws for the movie. especialy since he is playing a simular roll in the movie goon and there are much more talented actors they can use for the roll. hell id rather see Jason Mewes in it;P
I was watching sportsnet and they were talkign wit ha movie director who is actually going to be making a movie based on this song. The movie will be called Hit somebody aswell.
"Speaking at a live event in London on October 13, 2009, Smith stated that funding had been secured for Red State but he is more in the mindset to proceed with Hit Somebody and hold Red State off for a year."
He actually is going to be the director, wasn't just wishful thinking haha
I've always loved this song. But I think it fits one of our guys best. Lynon Byers the semi famous Bruins goon scored a goal in the stanley cup finals. Actually the last Bruin goal in the stanly cup finals. let'shope we getback soon.
Mmm its a funny song but I'm not sure if its meant to be laugh out loud funny. You wouldnt know it from the reactions of the drunken rowdy (redneck?) audience but the song is sort of sad and poignant. Kevin Smith feels very passionate about the moral of this song and is trying to adapt it for his next film.
Yah, you keep cut the tension in the room on the final verse from the sounds of it. Hell, even I was wondering if he was gonna score... suspensful...which is really really rare for a song!
yes he did.with the dude who wrote, tuesdays with Morrie.his name escapes me right now.but Warren and this dude definitely wrote it.and on the original recording,David letterman did the "hit somebody" refrain.
If you download from the Zevon archives, he says "This is a song that I wrote with a very good friend of mine by the name of Mitch Album[sp?]. Mitch is a sportswriter...wrote a moderately successful book called Tuesdays with Morrie." Zevon doesn't qualify his remarks in any way, so he clearly claims to have written the tune, at least this version of it.
What he states is that it is a song he wrote with a very good friend, which is the case. Mitch Albom wrote the lyrics and Zevon wrote the music. What is there to qualify?
I know Buddy got his goal, but "the last thing he saw was the flashing red light, he saw that heavenly light" implies that Buddy was killed by the check from the Finn.
While it's not exactly tragic, it's the best word that I can think of.
@cowpacino - Actually Buddy was not killed through the check. The "heavenly light", also referred to as the "flashing red light" he saw, was the light behind the goal that is turned on with each goal and is accompanied by an infernal siren. It is described as "heavenly" because it meant Buddy got his big wish. Goons on hockey teams get "coldcocked" all the time, and multiple times at each game, without dying.
Well you can think that, but why would Zevon say, "the LAST thing he saw" that implies that after the flashing red light, he didn't see nothin' no mo' and "heavenly light" could mean the goal lamp, but it could also mean the bright light people often report seeing in a near death experience.
And of course goons get checked all the time without dying, but it's not unheard of for someone to die on the ice, think Bill Masterton.
this song really touched me emotionally the first time I heard it, a message of having your dreams realized have seldom been executed so flawlessly. each time he sings the line "twenty years of waiting went into that shot" I get shivers.
anyway, does anyone know if you can get a hold of this entire concert?
If the guy that yelled "YES" twenty-seven times towards the end of this song: SHUT THE FUCK UP!! If I was there, you would have been knocked by number three, And stop ruining great songs like this one!!
Dude, that is part of the point. The guy was enjoying the moment of listening to a real artist. Enjoy every sandwich-to the fullest. And that includes some occasionally jackassery.
THIS is the definitive version. Warren at the piano, preaching the gospel, the crowd hanging on every word. One voice cries out "Hit Somebody", then a few more, and eventually everyone.
I triple dog dare anyone not to get chills when Buddy scores.
I'm from Saskatoon. This is an anthem. Warren Zevon is the greatest.

What is there to qualify?

what a great tragic song
one of my favorite Zevon songs, and one of my favorite tragic songs period.

Ummm, I think you missed the point.
Buddy got his goal.
Life and hockey aren't measured in stats but in living your heart's desire.
hekidanjo 2 years ago
I know Buddy got his goal, but "the last thing he saw was the flashing red light, he saw that heavenly light" implies that Buddy was killed by the check from the Finn.
While it's not exactly tragic, it's the best word that I can think of.
cowpacino 2 years ago
I guess it's an outlook thing.
A life spent doing what you are good at PLUS being able to achieve your highest ambition is a life well lived.
hekidanjo 2 years ago

@cowpacino yes, i think it was meant to be left amiguous. maybe buddy went out in a blaze of glory or maybe he's running a pub back in saskatoon.
either way, roland the headless thompson gunner is going to take care of that finn one day.

this song really touched me emotionally the first time I heard it, a message of having your dreams realized have seldom been executed so flawlessly. each time he sings the line "twenty years of waiting went into that shot" I get shivers.
anyway, does anyone know if you can get a hold of this entire concert?

dude chill out it's a funny little song he wrote about a hockey player...not a statement on the human condition

And that includes some occasionally jackassery.

ok, his ranting works with the song; and i like it!

THIS is the definitive version. Warren at the piano, preaching the gospel, the crowd hanging on every word. One voice cries out "Hit Somebody", then a few more, and eventually everyone.
I triple dog dare anyone not to get chills when Buddy scores.

I hate sports, but I broke into tears and cheers at 3:52 I think only Warren could make me do that when performing a song like this.
