@belcantomania E te ne intendi! Pavarotti aveva infatti una voce di timbro "aureo" chche "ufficialmente" sembra essere ritenuta più bella di quella "argentea" di Kraus; per il resto è come confrontare la latta pittata con l'oro: la tecnica di Kraus è ECCELSA (scuola "belcantistica", che ha avuto il massimo esegeta nel più grande di ogni tempo Giacomo Lauri Volpi) quella di Pavarotti poco più che mediocre (scuola "carusiana" decisamente inferiore alla precedente);
Facciamo parte dell'ARISTOCRAZIA: a noi piacciono solo I MIGLIORI.
Quite controversial - Too many amateurish listeners without real knowledge of Bel Canto. Pity! Bel Canto in not Abstract Painting... All these, with the exception of a few, who held no prejudice in judging.
You only hear fundamental in recordings, no overtones. Fundamental only is flat, Kraus has so much sound that most of it was overtone. You need to understand these things if you want to comment about these singers.
I wasn't referring to overtones or the voice. I was referring to his phrasing and inflection evoking little emotion (especially around 4:14); I didn't find them effective in the slightest. I didn't think the tempo was the most effective one either, and I'm not a big fan of the way Bonynge conducts in general.
It's not all about the overtones. I have other recordings of Kraus in the '70s which were dramatically thrilling.
The music is not always going to be pretty, and the phrasing of the music is just as important as the overtones. I find that the rendition hear is uninteresting and stoic compared to Kraus's earlier renditions.
It is not all about overtones, so many other things contribute to the dramatic impact of the piece.
that is why for example when you hear Bjorling, you hear something shrill or buzzsaw-like. His overtones were unbelievable, and that is what made him great.
This is how people like Pavarotti were exciting, its about overtones. Fundamental by itself is in fact flat.
The music is ALWAYS going to be genial and very pretty, what makes it exciting? The overtones, which you need to experience live.

Kraus may have had great technique, but sadly his voice was not beautiful.......compared to Pavarotti's voice, it is simply mediocre.....and that's why he didn't have as big a career....it was no accident...
You may be a radiologist, but I suggest you go see an esr, throat specialist - no pun intended. I fear there's great distorsion in your sound peeception.

Kraus was older here but his voice held up so wonderfully. I heard him do this on stage he sang it perfectly. His singing was always technically perfection.
Scipa owns this aria...cannot be done better....his light voice is perfectly suited to the passagio...also his timing and phrasing are absolutely spot on....Kraus's version sounds totally hamfisted in comparison.....soory to say....

That felt quite dramatically flat. It wasn't completely Kraus's fault though, poor chorus and orchestra contributed.

Actually, it IS about the overtones.
The OVERTONES are what make opera/the voice exciting.
I'll say it again, you only hear FUNDAMENTAL on recordings,

Tu che a Dio spiegasti l'ali
o bell'alma innamorata,
ti rivolgi a me placata,
teco ascenda il tuo fedel.
Ah! Se l'ira dei mortali
fece a noi sì cruda guerra,
se divisi fummo in terra,
ne congiunga il Nume in ciel.

Raimondo: CHE FACESTI? [what have you done?]
Edgardo: A TE VENGO,O BELL'ALMA.. [I come to you, oh beautiful soul]
Raimondo: SCIAGURATO! [unhappy man]
Edgardo: TI RIVOLGI,AH AL TUO FEDEL. [Oh! turn towards your true love]
Raimondo:PENSA AL CIEL! [think of heaven!]

Kraus was wonderfull. I can suggest you to to listen Bulent Bezduz. So easy and touching.

This should be required viewing by any tenor who currently sings this role. Kraus demonstrates how this scene should be sung.
Bravo.
