Looking for years for these versions of Stardust & Deep Purple, but couldn't remember the artist. Just got the idea of Googling "Doo wop song Stardust" & it came up halfway down the page. They both bring back so many memories! Thank you so very very much.
This group has an interesting background dating back to the late 40's. Billy Ward wrote, and arranged music plus he was a pianist. From the early 50's untl 1957 the Dominos had great lead vocalist such as Clyde McPhatter and Jackie Wilson in addition to Billy. He took this Classic song and arranged it into a million seller 20 years after in was written. There is no better vocal rendition of Deep Purple. Billy Ward and the Dominos own this one forever!!
when i heard star dust by this group i thought how wonderful if only they would have recorded another favorite of mine.......and wow, here it is many thanks
The greatest lead voice inspiration to us. The impeccable delivery, the precision control and range of the lead of Eugene Mumford. A great decision for Billy Ward to let Mumford have this rare moment to shine in his Dominoes era. Eugene Mumford, a vocal hero to us. Beautiful.
"ricfive"...your post below got me digging on the Internet. I had just always assumed that Billy Ward sang lead on "Deep Purple"...not to mention "Stardust"...and now I find differently. Props to Gene Mumford.
"Unquestionably, one of the most talented, influential 1950s group leads was Eugene Mumford. The North Carolina native lent his golden tenor to the pioneering, influential Larks and later enjoyed his greatest successes fronting Billy Wards Dominoes on Star Dust and Deep Purple.
On YouTube...off YouTube...almost impossible to find...impossible to buy...PlunkyJunction you have done us a huge favor with this. Billy Ward is one of the, if not the, greatest male singers of all time...!!!

Gene Mumford, one of the premier great voices of all rockdom, gets his due in this ditty along with Stardust a few months before. He had great range.
