I was there folks...Nisssan Pavillion, Virginia, my very first SD concert and I'm not proud to say this, but I've also got the bootleg double CD of this same show. Wayne Krantz on lead guitar. What's curious is that they played an experimental-slightly different version (the bridge had different mel./changes) of 'Jack of Speed', w/ Walter Becker singing lead, and a still unreleased tune called 'Wet Side Story", which from close listening, sounds like it had 'dummy lyrics'.
It's bands like Steely Dan that inspired me to become a musician, Steve Wonder, Prince, and many more. Even so the younger musicians are taking it to another level, and I am not referring to the pop music we hear today. The music we hear today is suited for the toilet, and need to be flush, before it contaminate the youths.
IGY definitely sounds like a Dan song, like Deacon Blues or Time Out of Mind, but the other songs on the Nightfly album are less Dan-ish, as Fagen explores different jazzy styles and such, like Ruby Baby, New Frontier, and Walk Between the Raindrops.
This was not one of my favorites, although growing up listening to Steely Dan, I really didnt know this was Donald Fagan of "Steely Dan" as I heard this always on the local smooth jazz station during the early 90s. It wasn't till later on I realized Fagan's voice and kinda recognoized it as a Steely Dan sound and voice of Donald Fagan, but wasnt like all the others. About ten years ago I realized it was a "solo" album Fagan did in 1981 "Nightfly" that sounded very similar to "Gaucho" 1980

It is not uncommon. Sometimes they play one of Fagen's and one of Baker's. I think in this same set they play Baker's Book of liars.
