Just watched this again. This is for me the pivotal aria in the opera for after this the spiral into disaster and horror can no longer be prevented. Gavanelli is supreme, his sheer presence makes him THE Rigoletto of the 20th century for me. Absolutely fantastic.
When this production was transmitted, live, from Covent Garden I was very ill.My husband too was sick, but got up went downstairs and set the video recorder. True love and devotion I've never forgotten. Thankfully now I have the production on DVD, a fabulous cast and with the late great Sir Edward Downes conducting. I love Davis McVicar's take on this, the saddest of operas for it shows a court weighed down by depravity. A set of desperate, disparate people spiralling to their inevitable doom
Incredible performance in incredible production. The decadence of the Duke's court was perfect-lets not forget that he was a 'serial shagger' whose court was as corrupt as he. Gavanelli is a triumph in this production. I felt priveledged to see it first time around and have it on DVD now. This aria sums up all his energy and brilliance. Fantastic.
The artistic direction is strange with these sticks. I read that Gavanelli abandoned them after the opening night. Fully agree with you that his vocal and artistic interpretation leaves a lot to be desired. Strong voice overall but not well placed. Leo Nucci is in another universe by comparison.
Where is this tremendous voice gone? I have heard Gavanelli in 1990 as Gerard in Andrea Chenier in Stuttgart. Here we hear just the end of a great voice.
paolo gavanelli canta ancora xke i contratti vengono fatti molti anni prima...e non rompete xfavore xke ci sono molti baritoni piu bravi di lui ke vengono messi da parte...ormai ha la voce logorata ke si ritirasse!!!!!!
Gavanelli's voice is definitely too light for the bitter and sad Rigoletto. In his first part of the 'Si tremenda' the orchestra has to hold in, play less dramatic than one would wish, otherwise they outplay him. The conductor by the way knows what he is doing! It didn't like the interpolated high notes at the end, but the last few bars of the orchestra are great!
Gavanelli is an amazing stage presence, although I agree that he sacrifices some of the role's acting potential to that soft rapture that often slips over his face. Vocally, I like the coarseness of his Rigoletto although this isn't the best performance, even of Gavanelli's Rigoletto, that I've come across.
mamma mia ke orrore! una pecora sembra sto gavanelli poi se poco poco urla la voce e tutta ingolata! a lecce nell otello te l ho urlai di ritirarti ma tu ancora canti!
one caracteristic of a production (like the orgy in this case) is not going to define the entire thing.otherwise, we didnt meet verdi, so we don't know what he was really thinking.
I don't think much of whoever designed the sets, costumes and production in general, it is awful! Which is annoying as Rigoletto one of my favorite operas!
I agreed i have seen it at thr Royal opera house, it was obscene lots of nudity and indecent scenes in the first act do they really need to do all that to attract people? Verdi never imagined it like this! Neighter have I!i sure wont go back to the Royal Opera House untill they decide to do some decent Setting Design. Afterall its all part of the performance!
I was just glad that when I saw it that I didn't get seats with a good view! However I suppose it is an achievement for a director to ruin a production of what Tito Gobbi described in his autobiography as an indestructible opera!
P.S. as far as I am concerned any director that feels that any opera needs an orgy in it should have their head examined and find a new job as they have obviously missed the entire point. And yes I know I am getting a bit carried away.
no, i disagree. I think the orgy is justified, as verdi wanted to show extreme behaviors. Obviously it was imposible in the 1850's to show this, so now is the equivalent. What don't like is the settings and the whole view. Is an empty production.
Talking about decency or not, it doenst matter. art is art and life is life. Being pissed off for nudity i find is stupid. Our world is quite different than in 1800's , so s good to get up to date in productions, and sex is part of our world now.
No, in my opinion Verdi wanted to express strong emotions in his operas. He was attracted to Rigoletto because of Rigoletto's emotions not the Duke's behaviour. Another thing, why does it have to be "up to date", the music and libretto are over 150 years old? And the final and most important point, an orgy doesn't fit the music!
I think that's probably the fault of the filming and youtube. Schafer's voice is phenomenal and REALLY powerful. I bet in person, you would have heard it perfectly.

This was a great production. Love the way Rigoletto is like some big insect, the way he scuttles around on those 2 big walking sticks.

Well, that's why this world is wonderful ... different people, many tastes. I also like Rolling Stones' "Waiting on a friend"
X0NYKWLMgx0
and Coldplay ... Beatles ... Norah Jones ... Kalinka - a Russian song, Hungarian dances, Zorba's dance (and the movie).
What do you like?
