Edgar Bergan, one of the worst ventriloquists but surprisingly the most famous! It's funny when you think about how he was famous doing a RADIO show too! This is one of the few times I've seen him perform "live". I mean I always saw him in films or on the radio, so he lips were not moving then. Love Charlie though, especially with WC Fields! Thanks for posting. If you want to see a funny ventriloquist skit search this "Cheezy Ventriloquist Act - Chuck McCann" totally cracks me up!
Edgar knew he was getting "rusty" as far as his ventriloquism went (it started to atrophy when he became a big success on radio)- once, he was concerned his young daughter Candy {Candice} believed "Charlie McCarthy" was real. He recalled addressing that issue one evening by asking her, "Isn't it wonderful how Charlie can talk?". Candy said, "Yes it is, Daddy, but you DO move your lips a little...".
why do i think this is the forerunner to Johnny Carson's Whom Do You Trust? In other words, the Bergen show was re-tooled and Carson was made host with McMahon his sidekick.
Also, kind of obvious that as he got older Bergen lost his ability to cover while throwing his voice.
You're right as far as I know. Who Do You Trust? began as Do You Trust Your Wife? Carson remained until he took over The Tonight Show in 1962 taking Ed McMahon with him.
Don Fedderson's answer to Groucho Marx's "YOU BET YOUR LIFE" (also on film), featuring Edgar Bergen and his famous dummies. This was originally telecast in late 1956, but Liggett & Myers' L&M commercials {"..brought to you by L&M, the modern cigarette-' Live Modern'...smoke L&M!"} are missing. Eric and Helena Goude were the biggest winners in the short history of the series [January 1956-March 1957]; in this edition, they came back for a fifth time. They appeared for a total of over 20 weeks...

I liked Paul Winchell better.

That is an unfortunately short run. I like this show. The Goudes were excellent.
