Just to join in the conversation about Mike, I actually like Mike's character too. The Young Ones needed a fairly normal person in the mix, so although he's odd, he's necessary. For all the amazingly histerical things about this video, I absolutely love Mike's non-preformance. There's something inherently funny about him just standing there amist the chaos onstage. He was my favorite character and horribly underrated.

@komedycuts Except that Mike, unlike Zeppo, actually had a personality outside of just being the straight man. His greed, chauvinism, and smugness combined with him being not just down to Earth but also fairly comfortable with the weirdness around him--his initial reaction to an atomic bomb in the kitchen is to sell it, for heaven's sake--make him much more subtle and therefore a bit funnier than the random zaniness of his roommates.

I remember hearing, however, that Mayall and Edmondson had been Rick and Vyv before the show, in stand-up, and Neil and Mike had also been stage-characters first but for whatever reason Mike was recast for TYO. I would like to see who played Mike on-stage.

@komedycuts Mike's a great character, brilliantly played. In a comedy like the young ones u need an understated performance in there to make Rick and the others look even more mad and, thereby, great characters to watch. If everybody was crazy all the time in the show, nothing would seem that out of place, insane or funny. He's the 'cool', so layed back watching the others shout and rush about is even more funny.
