I picture John listening to this song for the first time, Staying quiet the whole time not knowing how to react at first. He looks up at Yoko, she nods. He looks down and shakes his head and then yells. He throws things around, cursing Paul. Yoko sits there and lets it happen, she gets up quietly, grabs a pen and paper, brings it to John and holds it out.
Paul knew John shot 'The Beatles' in the head with Yoko's 'gun'. If you were alive in 1971 you knew it too. Measure it out George had 3 good albums after the Beatles; John had 2; and Paul had 6 in the excellent category; Yoko had Zero. (Ringo had 1).
@pjs69828 Which Paul albums do you say are the 6 good ones? Trying to figure out where to start... the only post Beatles solo albums I have are Lennons first two.
I don't want to get all preachy on youtube because that's ridiculous, but the fact of the matter is that getting pissed at someone for not liking something makes no sense. Matters of preference are for the most part unarguable. Even if someone doesn't like the Beatles (coming from a crazy Beatles fan here), there's no reason to get upset with them.
Like what you like. Everyone has an opinion. I love both Paul and John and enjoy their solo careers a lot~
I don't know how you're all listening to brilliant work by both John and Paul and all you can focus on is who was better alone. They're both geniuses now listen to the music!
Don't know how it happened, but while he was part of The Beatles, Paul McCartney was definitely the one of them who wrote the best music. But after The Beatles... This shit isn't just bad compared to The Beatles, this is just bad music period. I'm not too big a fan of Lennon's solo stuff, but everything he made was miles ahead of this shit.
@SimaanFreeloader Dude! Paul's solo career was great. He just took a step to his own way :P I love the Beatles but the music from the other members of the beatles are good
@spacecowboy7580 You might have point there. Maybe they all just sucked after The Beatles. Lennon just had a single good year after they broke up. In any, that must be the real tragedy of their breakup, that they all started writing shitty music afterwards.
You didn't reply to my question...but if you think Band On The Run was shitty music you have no taste.
It's the best post Beatles album by any of the 4...period.
Obviously the music was not going to be as good because they weren't writing together and didn't have the other ones input...but to dismiss everything after The Beatles as shitty is senseless and totally wrong.
@spacecowboy7580 Band on the Run is decent. No more than that. The best post Beatles music was probably John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band.Although still, had it been a Beatles album, it would have been one of the worst.
As to the decline in quality following the breakup, it's not obvious to me it was because they lost having each other's input.AFAIK they didn't collaborate on anything much from The White Album and forward. If you haven't you should watch Let It Be to see what I mean.
It's a tie. No winners or losers. Both were very talented in their own right but I think they prob. got into arguments about who was the boss of the group. Power struggle. John felt threatened by Paul b/c he was the "cute" one and Paul liked John's writing ability.
John Lennon definitely took some of the lines of this to be directed at him like "Too many people preaching practices" "You took your lucky break and broke it in two". John repsonded with the far nastier "How Do You Sleep" which was a direct attack on McCartney.
JFrugby what is your basis for saying paul is dead? we went thru this really in real life years ago. If you say he is dead your going to have to say why you say this. Your talking to me then your talking to someone who has seen more amazing things than the entire world has ever imagined. and DONE THEM. But then this question would indicate something to that effect " Who is it who beckons from the waxing and waning light?" v7howkloosh@aol.com
Paul and John were great friends. Paul wrote this song because he wanted to know why John had deliberately chosen Yoko over him. This song is as much about Yoko as it is about John.
@bud19601978 I had the same experience as you. I used to come home from school, put on the headphones, and listen to either Ram, Rubber Soul, or Sgt. Pepper. I loved it then and still do.
My thought is that people always want to give John credit for being the innovative one, but I really think it was Paul. Paul came up with the idea to do Sgt. Pepper. Paul had the idea for side two of Abbey Road. John said that he thought Paul was trying to sabotage his songs because Paul would always want to "experiment" on them by making them all psychedelic. If you listen to Paul's solo work he's tried a little bit of everything. John never did anything like this song except with Paul's help.
@mattymath1, unfortunately John was almost a wasted talent. ALMOST. He had obvious stretches of greatness, but I would agree that Paul was the most innovative member of the Beatles. And Paul's post-Beatles work was by far the best. RAM and Wings, none of the other Beatles came close...
@j3ffrugby - Well put, totally agree. The Yoko influence didn't help she was just a Pete replacement he tried to be to creative IMHO instead of just getting on with the music as Paul did. I wonder would he have been with her today if he had lived ?
@j3ffrugby - Three Beatles "died" after the band broke up. But one of them, Ringo Starr, was reborn. He had one great hit after another up until the mid-70's. Of course, the other three Beatles wrote songs for him at that time, and I think that John produced his 1974 album "Goodnight Vienna." The Beatles were a band that was far greater than the sum of its parts. Musically, Paul was the most talented by far. Lennon was without doubt the better lyricist. George was George.
@smilinstevie88 George wasn't just George.... he was one heck of a guitarist and an integral part of the Beatles. I personally like alot of George's songs that had more meaning vs. some of Pauls "fruity songs"...lol.
@mountainman482 - actually I agree with you. George was fantastic and wrote most of the best late-era Beatles songs (Something, While My Guitar Gently Weeps", Here Comes The Sun, etc). I said what I said about him above to be semi-witty, and mainly because I didn't have enough characters left in the comment to say much of anything else. George was great! ( :
@mountainman482 geese they both are great important parts of the beatles. This song (I think) is about all the other people trying to reach for a piece of cake. (Yoko, that guy in India, their owners who screwed them over pay wise.)
@lrd9999 It does sound like he's talking about overpopulation. But I've read in books (about them) that John wrote "How Can You Sleep" as a jab to Paul and Paul wrote "Too Many People" as a jab to John. They apparently wrote many other songs about eachother. And I agree with you, I enjoy John and Paul's meaningfull songs. But some people just listen for the catchy tunes... ;/
I own this on the original vinyl along with 'Wings Over America' & 'Wings At The Speed Of Sound'. I got all 3 at a pop culture convention. Best McCartney album!
@livy36916 Probably, to some extent, it was addressed toward John. However, Johns diatribe toward Paul made this song pale in compairison. " How Do You Sleep " is a fine example of that where John just rips Paul but good !
@livy36916 I always assumed it was about overpopulation, that the "broke it in 2" part was about each generation having to split the same resources into smaller pieces, and that the ending was about the conception of yet another hungry child. Anyway, it must have been frustrating for PM in the '70s and '80s: write something brilliant and it gets mostly ignored, write some silly, trite POC and it's a gold record. Then they turn around and accuse him of peddling tripe.
@thewho186 Don't get your panties tied up in knots. I merely stated what thousands consider to be a fact. If you wish not to believe it that's fine too. Some believe in God, others don't. Some believe in UFO'S others don't etc... You believe in Faul, I believe in Paul. It's all good!
@ramon19141, you are misinformed. I don't know why people insist on this lie. I saw Paul on his last world tour stop this year in Cincinnati, OH and I assure you he is far from dead. So quit being an asshole.
@ramon19141, show me proof. You can't. Paul is alive and well and you are spewing poisonous hate. Spreading hate about a member of the most influential band in history. Shame on you and your trolling ways.
@j3ffrugby "Spewing poisonous hate"? "Spreading hate"? We're talking about a Pop Star here, not world peace. You really need to chill out. Take two asprin, get into bed, and listen to your favorite Faul McCartney CD's and you'll feel better in the morning. Good Luck!
@ramon19141, you are obviously a lost cause. I am as chill as it gets, because I don't need to go around spreading lies to get attention. Some of us move out of our parent's basement, get a job and GROW UP. Try it sometime...
@ramon19141, my excuse is that some punk teenage kid who doesn't have a clue is spreading lies about Paul McCartney being dead. That explains everything. I rest my case.
@j3ffrugby For being a "punk teenage kid" I really got inside your head, didn't I? And allowing that to happen as an adult says something about your background, doesn't it? Just the same, I'll share one last thought with you: A lie is a persons concept of what the truth is. Some people choose to ingore the facts because the truth would hurt to much. I'm afraid you fall into that category. Enough said.
@ramon19141, no, misinformed punk teenage kids "don't get in my head." The only reason you even register on my radar is because I thought maybe you liked the Beatles and would like to be free of the ignorance you are displaying before us here on a Macca video. You choose to ignore the facts that you are repeating some stupid crap one of your friends told you about McCartney being dead. A lie is a falsehood. Quit repeating what your underpaid tired teachers tell you about what a lie is.
@j3ffrugby Now we know something about your educational background as well. Did you finish school? I coud take this to a higher lever but you're no match for me. I need to find someone else I can have a more substantial conversation with. But let this one fact remain: The REAL Paul McCartney is DEAD. This is my last word on the subject.
@ramon19141 Look, do you really believe this absolute crap? I'm a 16 year old still in high school. It's just a hoax!!! Paul is still alive. He still sounds the same (with the exception of his voice deeping throughout the years but everyone does that). If Paul McCartney has really died, Then Elvis, Marylin Monroe, JFK, MLK, and and John Lennon are all still alive but are on a hidden island in the pacific ocean that nobody will ever find. The "Paul is dead" Hoax was created by the media!
@Beatlefanatic9 Take a look at my user name: RAM ON. I got it from the RAM album. It's the 3rd song on the album. I'm telling you this, to prove how much I love the Beatles including Sir Paul McCartney. Is he dead? Of course not! I just love messing with peoples brain, like I did with j3ffrugby. The "Paul is Dead" thing is the greatest hoax in rock history! Ram On!
this is the enduring song off this record for me...had great disdain for this record in the face of harrisons all things must. this song is supposedly a slam at lennon for being one of the too many people.
i think its cute how paul and john fought with each other through song.
think about it, they were like brothers making fun of each other. and they show theyre personaility through it too. johns is straight up offensive, and pauls is more creative and thoughtful. they were true brothers, being a little cruel but would never do any real harm. great song however!
@rollingstonesgirl99 Paul's insult more creatine and thoughtful?? If John had felt that way (Oh we're just brothers making fun of each other) he never would have written such a "straight up offensive" song and record it publicly for all the world to hear! By the way, in May Pang's book, she wrote: " Paul's song referring to John had a lasting effect on John, it really hurt him". "Being a little cruel would never do any real harm?" Get real!!
@ramon19141 by creatiVe & thoughtful i ment he didnt come straight out & say john sucks in the way that john did to him. i dont see why it was such a horrid thing. havent you ever made fun of your friends before, just to be sorta sarcastic and funny because you know in the end its alright? hey, john should have thought about writing that mean song towards paul if he wasnt ready for the feedback. no matter who went first. they were in their 30s, they should be able to take the heat like men.
@ramon19141 oh and by the way, i said being cruel but would never do any real harm, as in its not like the two would actually ever go and fist fight each other. it was more of an intellectual thing. and what happened happened, so why argue about it?
To use a classic American car companies John was G.M. a vehicle made up of many different brands and unique styles under one parent company. Paul is Ford. Durable tough and all around basic regular George was Chrysler. Chasing the others while still making a name for himself with his own unique styles and Ringo is A.M.C. Borrowing from the big 3 while producing his own yet quirky product
HOW DO YOU SLEEP WAS MEAN. MEAN STRINGS FROM SPECTOR, MEAN RIFFING FROM GEORGE, MEAN KEYS FROM NICKY HOPKINS, JUST A FUCKING MEAN SONG IN GENERAL BUT GODAMN IT WAS ONE MEAN TONE AND IT IS A AWSOME MEAN ROCKER!
@chookieJS Mean? equally mean is paul's words to John, which by the way started the whole damn thing: "That was your first mistake,You took your lucky break, and broke it in two. Now what can be done for you. You broke it in two." So...John and friends replyed with HOW DO YOU SLEEP? Paul knew better, HE was just being outright MEAN!
@ramon19141 I don't agree. Dude "The only thing you did was yesterday and since your gone your just another day" and "the sound you make is muzak to my ears, you must have learnt a thing or two through all those years" and these even more but I just can't remember. Too Many People was more subtle... And Paul always seemed to say nice things about John in interviews... And to me John was always saying mean stuff about Paul. As much as I love John, he had a shit attitude.
@ramon19141 You don't seem to understand nuance. Paul, in this song, NEVER ONCE criticizes John's songwriting or music. Paul only says to John: You threw away our band, the best thing that ever happened to us. By contrast, John in How Do You Sleep is vicious and nasty, attacking Paul as a songwriter and slamming Paul's music. It was a jerk move on John's part. If John wanted to call Paul bossy and controlling, fine. But John crossed the line and it only made John look bad and it still does.
@TheMrosin "You threw away our band, the best thing that ever happened to us" I see. We're back to "creative and thoughtful" . The lesson here kids is: "Being a little cruel would never do any real harm".
@ramon19141 You dodged the point. John's song was a jerk move. He deliberately sought to sabotage Paul's reputation. Paul never did that to John. And what did Paul say in this song that wasn't true. John DID take his lucky break and broke it in two. John WAS preaching. "Too many people preaching practices, don't let 'em tell you what you want to be." GREAT line. It means think for yourself. And John, as a free thinker, should have appreciated it. Instead, Mr. Imagine Peace became a hater.
@janet19able So true. For example: It was John that quit the Beatles, but it was Paul who ran to the press, saying he quit the Beatles, just to get the publicity!
@ramon19141 And John was jealous that he didn't think of it first. By your twisted logic, if John had announced it first, he would have been "an attention grabber."
The Klee respectfully got this back to front. Ram came out before Imagine and McCartney acknowledges the "your took your lucky break and broke it in two" lline was a swipe at Lennon. Lennon's subsquent "Imagine" album (which contained a mono postcard take-off of the Ram cover), contained "How Do You Sleep?"
Paul's jibes may have seemed gentle but they were laser sharp, John responded in the only way he knew, with Yoko egging him on and George's whole hearted support. Great song though, as is how do you sleep
@bibsteenson I´m not sure if George was happy with John´s answer - I saw some "making of" videos and when John sings some nasty parts of lyrics, George looks at him like if he wants to say "that´s enough, John, calm down". Ringo was also present at the recording, but did not want to contribute, he felt it´s not fair...
To add my 2 cents to the conversation: Both John and Paul put out great solo music. However, they were just very oil&water in the directions their lives were taking them. John harbored alot of resentment for Paul, calling his music pop crap, among other things. But when John finally found peace in life through baby Sean, his music became more McCartneyesque than ever. Just listen to Double Fantasy.
Comparing Paul and John = comparing apples and oranges. Paul was (and is) still great in his own way, John was great in his own way. END OF DISCUSSION!
@ramon19141 On what planet? Earth? Come on, this is an old Yoko 'Take That' line from back when they were suing each other. One that I'm sure even she never really believed. No sense quoting it now.
Wow! Paul actually played the guitar on this track!
He is awesomer than I knew... guess he played bass with the Beatles, but that was just because he was so good he could do both, and George was ... just was.
@joseypussycat Paul actually played every instrument on "The Ballad of John and Yoko"...Lennon had laid the vocal track...but the band was close to splitting at the time, Paul was adding and removing stuff from various tracks in the Studio..He laid down the tracks and George Martin mixed them
@524pmdnyc actually they split the instruments on that song. Lennon sang lead vocals, and played all guitars and percussion, while McCartney played drums, bass, piano, and backing vocals. The session was actually a very good time for both of them said people who witnessed it "John called out "Go a bit faster Ringo" and Paul replied "Ok George" pg 551 'Many Years from Now' book by Barry Miles.
his ballada and softer stuff may have gotten more attention but it's his harder stuff like thiis number that hold up the best. this was the B side for Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey but became a radio hit in it's own right. and dig that great early 70s guitar riff.
I like Paul (Whatever his undertaking is). Let's face it,If we are listening to this stuf,(We are "Geek's" or "Old Farts") I don't have a problem with that,Do you? As far as John is concerned, I think it's interesting that he get's the most Hit's. What's your take?
I was like 10 years old when this came out. I took the city bus into town (Michigan City, Indiana), to purchase the 45rpm. I still love all The Beatles. I recently heard this on Chicago radio, I forgot how much I loved it.
class ilike everything from captain beefheart to abba to shirley bassey but the beatles will never be surpassed

smilinstevie88 1 week ago
@mountainman482 geese they both are great important parts of the beatles. This song (I think) is about all the other people trying to reach for a piece of cake. (Yoko, that guy in India, their owners who screwed them over pay wise.)
midraw1 6 days ago
@lrd9999 It does sound like he's talking about overpopulation. But I've read in books (about them) that John wrote "How Can You Sleep" as a jab to Paul and Paul wrote "Too Many People" as a jab to John. They apparently wrote many other songs about eachother. And I agree with you, I enjoy John and Paul's meaningfull songs. But some people just listen for the catchy tunes... ;/

This song was actually written by Paul to insult John
livy36916 3 months ago in playlist More videos from mccartneymusic
@livy36916 Probably, to some extent, it was addressed toward John. However, Johns diatribe toward Paul made this song pale in compairison. " How Do You Sleep " is a fine example of that where John just rips Paul but good !
mrstevehartman 3 months ago
@livy36916 I always assumed it was about overpopulation, that the "broke it in 2" part was about each generation having to split the same resources into smaller pieces, and that the ending was about the conception of yet another hungry child. Anyway, it must have been frustrating for PM in the '70s and '80s: write something brilliant and it gets mostly ignored, write some silly, trite POC and it's a gold record. Then they turn around and accuse him of peddling tripe.

ramon19141 3 months ago
@ramon19141, you are misinformed. I don't know why people insist on this lie. I saw Paul on his last world tour stop this year in Cincinnati, OH and I assure you he is far from dead. So quit being an asshole.

@j3ffrugby Who you saw in Cincinnati was Faul. But hey, he's pretty good too, so hope you enjoyed the show!
ramon19141 3 months ago
@ramon19141, show me proof. You can't. Paul is alive and well and you are spewing poisonous hate. Spreading hate about a member of the most influential band in history. Shame on you and your trolling ways.
j3ffrugby 3 months ago
@j3ffrugby "Spewing poisonous hate"? "Spreading hate"? We're talking about a Pop Star here, not world peace. You really need to chill out. Take two asprin, get into bed, and listen to your favorite Faul McCartney CD's and you'll feel better in the morning. Good Luck!
ramon19141 3 months ago
@ramon19141, you are obviously a lost cause. I am as chill as it gets, because I don't need to go around spreading lies to get attention. Some of us move out of our parent's basement, get a job and GROW UP. Try it sometime...

@ramon19141, my excuse is that some punk teenage kid who doesn't have a clue is spreading lies about Paul McCartney being dead. That explains everything. I rest my case.
j3ffrugby 3 months ago
@j3ffrugby For being a "punk teenage kid" I really got inside your head, didn't I? And allowing that to happen as an adult says something about your background, doesn't it? Just the same, I'll share one last thought with you: A lie is a persons concept of what the truth is. Some people choose to ingore the facts because the truth would hurt to much. I'm afraid you fall into that category. Enough said.
ramon19141 3 months ago
@ramon19141, no, misinformed punk teenage kids "don't get in my head." The only reason you even register on my radar is because I thought maybe you liked the Beatles and would like to be free of the ignorance you are displaying before us here on a Macca video. You choose to ignore the facts that you are repeating some stupid crap one of your friends told you about McCartney being dead. A lie is a falsehood. Quit repeating what your underpaid tired teachers tell you about what a lie is.
j3ffrugby 3 months ago
@j3ffrugby Now we know something about your educational background as well. Did you finish school? I coud take this to a higher lever but you're no match for me. The "Paul is dead" Hoax was created by the media!

i think its cute how paul and john fought with each other through song.
think about it, they were like brothers making fun of each other. and they show theyre personaility through it too. johns is straight up offensive, and pauls is more creative and thoughtful. they were true brothers, being a little cruel but would never do any real harm. great song however!
rollingstonesgirl99 4 months ago
@rollingstonesgirl99 Paul's insult more creatine and thoughtful?? If John had felt that way (Oh we're just brothers making fun of each other) he never would have written such a "straight up offensive" song and record it publicly for all the world to hear! By the way, in May Pang's book, she wrote: " Paul's song referring to John had a lasting effect on John, it really hurt him". "Being a little cruel would never do any real harm?" Get real!!
ramon19141 4 months ago
@ramon19141 by creatiVe & thoughtful i ment he didnt come straight out & say john sucks in the way that john did to him. i dont see why it was such a horrid thing. havent you ever made fun of your friends before, just to be sorta sarcastic and funny because you know in the end its alright? hey, john should have thought about writing that mean song towards paul if he wasnt ready for the feedback. no matter who went first. they were in their 30s, they should be able to take the heat like men.
rollingstonesgirl99 4 months ago
@ramon19141 oh and by the way, i said being cruel but would never do any real harm, as in its not like the two would actually ever go and fist fight each other. it was more of an intellectual thing. and what happened happened, so why argue about it?

To use a classic American car companies John was G.M. a vehicle made up of many different brands and unique styles under one parent company. Paul is Ford. Durable tough and all around basic regular George was Chrysler. Chasing the others while still making a name for himself with his own unique styles and Ringo is A.M.C. Borrowing from the big 3 while producing his own yet quirky product

Too Many People was creative and cool. How Do You Sleep was just straight up mean.
chookieJS 4 months ago
@chookieJS Mean? equally mean is paul's words to John, which by the way started the whole damn thing: "That was your first mistake,You took your lucky break, and broke it in two. Now what can be done for you. You broke it in two." So...John and friends replyed with HOW DO YOU SLEEP? Paul knew better, HE was just being outright MEAN!
ramon19141 4 months ago
@ramon19141 I don't agree. Dude "The only thing you did was yesterday and since your gone your just another day" and "the sound you make is muzak to my ears, you must have learnt a thing or two through all those years" and these even more but I just can't remember. Too Many People was more subtle... And Paul always seemed to say nice things about John in interviews... And to me John was always saying mean stuff about Paul. As much as I love John, he had a shit attitude.
chookieJS 4 months ago 4

The lesson here kids is: "Being a little cruel would never do any real harm".
ramon19141 4 months ago
@ramon19141 You dodged the point. John's song was a jerk move. He deliberately sought to sabotage Paul's reputation. Paul never did that to John. And what did Paul say in this song that wasn't true. John DID take his lucky break and broke it in two. John WAS preaching. "Too many people preaching practices, don't let 'em tell you what you want to be." GREAT line. It means think for yourself. And John, as a free thinker, should have appreciated it. Instead, Mr. Imagine Peace became a hater.

@ramon19141 You know, Paul Is an attention grabber.
janet19able 4 months ago
@janet19able So true. For example: It was John that quit the Beatles, but it was Paul who ran to the press, saying he quit the Beatles, just to get the publicity!
ramon19141 4 months ago
@ramon19141 And John was jealous that he didn't think of it first. By your twisted logic, if John had announced it first, he would have been "an attention grabber."

@TheMrosin Lennon deserved to be the "Attention Grabber" because it was his idea to leave the band! Not Paul's. Do you finally get it, moran!

Great song though, as is how do you sleep
bibsteenson 5 months ago
@bibsteenson I´m not sure if George was happy with John´s answer - I saw some "making of" videos and when John sings some nasty parts of lyrics, George looks at him like if he wants to say "that´s enough, John, calm down". Ringo was also present at the recording, but did not want to contribute, he felt it´s not fair...
MichalFokt 4 months ago
To add my 2 cents to the conversation: Both John and Paul put out great solo music. However, they were just very oil&water in the directions their lives were taking them. John harbored alot of resentment for Paul, calling his music pop crap, among other things. But when John finally found peace in life through baby Sean, his music became more McCartneyesque than ever. Just listen to Double Fantasy.
