  • dat is niet waar

  • Kitsune88 is right - this is Flemish. I can recognize Dutch when I hear (and read - just look at the subtitles) it.

  • Gee it sounds so germanic, and dutch, I'm quite dissapointed...to be honest

  • Well done, uploader, now everyone thinks the narration is in Gaelic when it's not. PEOPLE: the only Gaelic in this video is the female voice interviewing in the streets. The rest is Flemish (Belgian Dutch) or English.

  • So pretty! It's what I hear when I try to imagine what English must have sounded like before the Great Vowel Shift.

  • @AnaBanana311 I hadn't heard of this even until I read your comment. Haha, it is very interesting.

  • How do you say with proper grammar in Gaelic, "My shillelagh I let fly."

  • The Irish language has been under assault from the Anglo-Saxons and Normans since approx 1166. No wonder it is a minority language! It is a great language, more native Irish should speak it.

    Slainte` !

  • Wat een fantastisch kwalitatieve opname -_-

  • "The Irish are born with hatred to the English, and with good damn reason." This is a negative stereotype. Only people like the man in the video are the ones that give you a reason to dislike them. There are lots of nice English people who don't even care about this stuff. Some of which would even like Ireland to preserve the language. Don't judge people by a name, title nor group. Only hate them if you have reason to. Go raibh m'agat.

  • I think it was the cannerbury tales and beowulf I read in my Brit literature class..the original writing was a real real old english that the anglo saxons spoke. it was an english that people today wouldnt understand. Did gaelic branch off that language too cause it sounds like it?

  • Gaelic seems pretty sick. I would rather take Gaelic instead of Spanish any day.

  • I am learning Gaelic now.

  • it would be a shame to let another language die, good for Ireland to preserve its native language against imperialism.

  • Why are the subtitles in Dutch?

  • @JorisKanters It's taken from a Flemish news programme.

  • @JorisKanters Because this is a news report from Flemish television... The uploader should have mentioned it in the title... and should have recorded it better

  • Kevin Myarse!!!

  • Irish is such a lovely language, I would love for Ireland to give the English language the boot. There's already enough parts of the world speaking English, Irish in unique and wonderful.

  • This language should be spoken in Galicia, Spain which is were it originated. The Irish people are from Galicia, Spain, Galicia means the land of the gaelic people. The people of Galicia do speak Galego which seems to be a mixture of Gaelic and Spanish, Gaelic the traditional language of the region should be taught.

  • I will not allow the Irish language to die. I am a college bound american youth proud of my heritage and I will return to the land of my ancestors and hel bring irish back. From what I can see with the hugely supported Gaelscoilanna (all Irish speaking schools) the language is making a comeback and will become (eventually) the community language of Ireland again. I will make sure of it personally. What many of you are saying is right: it's just a stupid attitude that is hurting the language.

  • I want to learn the language very badly. It's part of my heritage, and a heritage I am damn proud of.

  • the horrible truth is that KM is only saying what most Irish ppl think. Norewgians speak an archaic language. Doesn't seem to've handicapped them!!

  • dubliners are far too sophisticated and 'new ireland' (and all that shit) to speak irish

  • It's not a living language anymore, it's a part of Irish hisory.

  • it's such a beautiful language, dont let it die!

  • @handofnergal Best case scenario's for preserving languages predict the demise of Irish by 2050, along with 75% of all languages in the world today. Worst case scenario's give a figure of 95%. There are already some voices even where I live to just make the make everyday language English. The planet gets smaller and smaller and these are the side effects. This would be a pity from a lot of perspectives, not in the least the Sapir-Worf hypothesis. Only one upside: we all understand one another.

  • Kevin Myers its the english peoples fault we dont speak irish that much!

  • sounds like Turkish

  • Is'nt his name spelt wrong here? I thought it was Kevin My-Arse !

  • I love Irish. My fathers main language is Gaelic, however he speaks old Gaelic, which i'm not sure how different it is. I'm currently trying to learn it but it i find it very hard to read and write it.

  • ?????????????????????????

  • at the begining thats flemish

  • The first part of this film is stupid, just because 2 people or 2000 people do not respond to a question in local language or in a dialect, it does not mean that the many Irish that do understand do not exist, there are people in every city and country who nominally speak the same language but they can hardly understand each other. There are 10 of thousands who do speak Celtic languages worldwide including my own gaelic from Scotland. Bliandha mhath úr gu càirdean ann an Eireann

A proposito ..il naso = An t-sròn (Alba).

:) ciao

  • @libertycaps666 hahahah Irish man. calm down. don't you know irish either, ha? 8D It's ok it is not a problem. Don't worry.. you are still an irish.. xD

  • Pog Mo Thoin. LOL

  • I don't understand why people whose the first language is English call themselves being the Irish. If you don't speak Irish you are not Irish.

  • @qqq1985 get fucked will ya you fucking mong, you dont know what the fuck your'e talking about stupid nepalese cunt

  • @libertycaps666 Nigger, I am glad at least you are one who knows. :D

  • @qqq1985 i aint no nigger dickhead, so stop talking shit about my country or i will personally track you down to that shithole nepal and rape your mother you prick

  • @libertycaps666 You are a piece of shit. I am wonder I paid attention to the piece of shit. Okay...bye, asshole. lol

  • @qqq1985 yeah go fuck yourself buddy

  • I'm American but, my heritage is Irish. I don't know why, but everytime I see an irish word or hear Celtic music, I think Froddo from the Lord of the Rings. Haha. I want to speak Gaelic.

  • Visit NEWSNET SCOTLAND

  • Fuck off you English bastard. Mon the Gaels!!

  • They come over to Ireland and do a documentry on Irish and ask an English wanker to give his opinion? fucking ejits why didn they talk to Hector or somone positive about the tongue.

  • What are those subtitles?? I speak some German and I can understand them, but it's not German

  • @samanthaksa Dutch.

  • My grandmother spoke "original Celtic Irish". Todays Irish language is far removed from what my grandmother spoke and far removed from the old Celtic Irish I learned at school.

Irish is no longer our national language. English is our national language. Irish is our historic language and only used in gaelteacht areas.

How many air traffic controllers etc, converse in cupla focal when talking an aircraft down.

Irish is out historic language. So is Scots Gaelic and Welsh Gaelic.

    Live with it.

  • @goinghomesomeday1 Sure ppl of the Gaeltachtaí, Gaelscoileanna, & Irish-language media like Beo, TG4 & Radió na Life wld disagree w/u there. Just cuz you don't speak it & it's not ever-present in your town doesn't mean it's not alive & kicking. Maybe if you travel around da island a bit u'd understand that better.

    And btw:

    1) Welsh (not "Welsh Gaelic"...that's retarded) is still very much alive & well, too.

    2) All 6 Celtic languages are being taught in schools again & have native speakers now.

  • The bloke reckons a tenth of Irish ppl regularly speak Irish, what does that tell you about the passion commitment blah blah, and all the rest of the clichés they aspire to, of the other 9/10s?

  • The man doing the reporting isn't speaking irish btw, maybe thats why some think it sounds dutch?

  • Oooh neilhosey, you said exactly what I wanted to say!! HA, thank you! I'm from the U.S. and frankly, couldn't agree more. Like hell it's not worth preserving. Assface.

  • It doesn't matter what this man says. If the Irish have a will to revive their language, they can achieve that. No one else can make up that decision for them.

Hebrew made a come-back in Israel and aficionados of Esperanto can be found all over the world and Esperanto is not even a historic language.

I think it's funny that some people say Irish is beautiful and others say it sounds like Dutch. No offense to the Dutch, but Dutch is not easy on the ears. I like the sound of Irish much more

  • It sounds like dutch. As a German speaker, I can even understood a few words :D

  • @WeaponX2007A DUTCH???? wow...no idea wich kind of dutch u heard then....I'm from holland....Maybe if u have an other diaclect out of holland like south neer to belgium or northern...it's eassier.....but with my amsterdams accent i cant follow it...

  • Please don't tar all the Irish in Britain with the same brush just cos of kevin myers. I am from London and my parents are native Irish speakers from connemara. I love the Irish language, I just think it's a shame the second generation Irish in UK weren't encouraged to learn it, even though we're Irish citizens.

  • Oh yeh Kevin Myers, just the man you want for a balanced report. "noone speaks Irish" - I speak Irish every day. It's true most people use English, but then most of the world speaks Chinese it doesn't mean English or French is dead

  • this kevin myers is definitely a cunt

  • cape breton used to be really strong in gaelic

  • What a DOUCHE

  • kevin myers is the excrement of humanity why is even allowed to breathe? he is an oxygen thief

  • Hey look what I can say!

Dath dearg ata ar an rothair

Yep. The bicycle is red. Thanks Rosetta Stone!

  • @MikeGlassVideos ha, you should've ended off with "Slàn!"

  • Sounds like dutch

  • all thanks to the British Empire! "For King and Country"!

  • It is part of the irish cultural heritage, so why not preserve it? On the other hand, I don't see why people are getting so riled up about it.

  • The EU is meant to be countries respecting each other not domination by Dutch/German /English etc. Wars and are caused by Foreigners going to other countries and imposing their way on others. Can you say " Flamms fur Alles , Alles fur Flandren " or should Dutch be finished as a minority Language in Europe.

Arrogant Teutonics we had here before ....

  • Kevin Myers is a ridiculous eejit. He loves being the centre of attention. "Nobody speaks Irish". I speak Irish every day you sarky old bollox!

  • @SeanOBriain Tabhair é dó, a chara! ;-)

  • @SeanOBriain Thumbs up for you a chara

  • @SeanOBriain

Myers is a troll, if people ignored him he'll be soon out of a job

  • Germans rule.....

  • Ireland and Scotland had better stand up loud and proud!!! Throw down on their Engish oppressors. America has had multiculturalism shoved down our throats to the point where we have NO CULTURE.

  • irish is nice, want to learn it

  • What a prick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hes just a posh English Sounding get!!! Just the type of person In england who is anti welsh, gaelic, scots tyke, Lanky Northumbrian cornish etc. The anouying folk who think everyone should speak "queens/standard english" all day every day. "warr'a ruddy naffin' numpty"!!!!

  • What a prick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Irish is not really spoken in Dublin. it is in other parts.

  • Let me be bold. Fuck this. I am a Serb living in Canada. I know Serbian and English. You've gotta read up on philology to appreciate why a language should be preserved.

  • phew, got a bit worried at the start for not being able to understand the man! But its Dutch or something, grand...

  • Trust an Englishman to say that about the langauge.

  • This video is in Dutch.

  • It sounds a lot like German to me

  • Ék rännde opp snoppen imellom bena po en jenta fra Irland en gang, òg hum sau hum sku liggja med snes andra.

  • Ní thuigeann an focail 'gaelic' ar an teideal????- tá na daoine ag caint as Gaeilge!!!!

  • h brd rdhrdrgd rbhshdr

    0__o

  • agreed. lol

  • What town did you live in? I'm an Irish American student planning on going to Ireland specifically to learn Gaelic.

  • @theFriendlyHughes they don't teach gaelic in ireland, go to scotland

  • @R32SKYLINEBWD ...Gaeilge is the standard term for Irish but In Munster they cling to their traditional Gaedhealaing (prncd Gael-linn) and in Ulster it's all GAELIC (Gaeilic in the dictionary) and they teach same in the schools there! I have gone to Scotland to learn Gaidhlig and hope to go again. Is beatha teanga í a labhairt. Why let diversity bother you?

  • Gaelic is a nice language and e.g. german speakers can pronounce the words correctly. Too bad that it is a rather difficult language (all this lenition, eclipse and strange grammar...), maybe thats one reason why this language is not so polular...but it doesnt deserve extinction anyway.

  • Its too bad that the Irish don't preserve their language. For a nation to remain they need to protect their Borders, language and culture. The Irish are too "multicultural". Nations that become too multicultural lose their own culture and language, while they embrace the culture of Aliens. Its sad and Pathetic.

  • There's no such thing as being "too multicultural". There are many countries and societies that are multicultural and still preserve their indigenous culture and practices. The US is a good example.

  • A wise friend of mine once said, that culture is a dangerous delusion. I think that this is essentially true. The only sane culture, is culture on the individual scale, or in other words, the aesthetic.

  • @JayAntoinette The US is a Bad example. We have to embrace the cultures of those that are coming here such as the Mexicans and Muslims and we have to be "sensitive" to their ways all at the same time they spit on our flag and never learn our language. America is so multicultural that she has practically lost her culture ( Pop culture and Hollywood and the like is a pseudo form of American culture)

  • @shgibby61981 That's absurd. It's been a minority language since the 19th century, mainly because of British suppression. Until 1871 Irish was forbidden to be taught in state education, and efforts to reintroduce it have only been made by the free Irish state. The Welsh had a similar measure.. the 'Welsh Not'. As far as I see it, colonialist policies abroad broke the back of language and culture abroad in the past, not 'multiculturalism'. Agreeing with JayAntoinette, the US is a great example.

  • sounds like a mix of dutch and german

  • I speak german, french, english and an old european dialect less or more fluent. It does not sound like german. Maybe some words.

  • Comment removed

  • My cousins in Sligo speak it fluently. Wish I could understand it, it's such a cool sounding classical language.

  • The language sounds beautiful.

  • @korisx The documentary is dutch or something, the only Irish spoken is the lady asking the question,..and barely audible. You can't really here it on this

  • @seanoceallachain Belgian, Flemish that is.

  • lol

  • kevin myers ya fukin prick

    bi ag caint gaeilge

  • i dont know what u said but it sure looks funny

  • my grandparents spoke gaelic.. i wish they tought us.. they just wanted us to speak english when they came over to Boston(irish) and Nova Scotia(scottish) .. yeah ima mutt and watt

  • itunes used to have a decent audiobook called "Pimsleurs Irish." it's a publishing firm that also has german, arabic, and many of the more popular languages. it's unfortunate that irish isn't more popular here in the states. even the boston area doesn't have much to offer in the way of it's cultural heritage beyond the colonial era.

  • Why can't the Scottish speak their native tongue between them and speak English for business and foreigners like most of us Maltese do?

  • Cause they haven't got the backbone to stand up and fight for their own language. They have their own education system and parliament but Gaelic is generally regarded as a redundant language. And guess what, they still have nerve to dress up in medievel costumes and call themselves Celts!

  • Comment removed

  • Bollocks smowkmylungs. I've met quite a few Maltese in my life, and not once have I met one who can speak Scottish.

  • You've misunderstood our native tongue is Maltese.

  • No, I was being sarcastic.

  • Now saying that puts you in a rather awkward position, you either misunderstood my comment or don't know what sarcasm is.

This is like saying its "Its freezing in the south pole" and tell people you are being sarcastic. Its just not sarcasm, especially since what you said is true, but I will tell you one thing your comment was very dry.

  • Sorry man. I just looked back and realised that I may have misunderstood your original comment. Your point about Scots switching between English and Scottish is a good one.

  • my US high school just offered a gaelic class im taking i love this language ITS NOT DEAD

  • (Start of M. McGeehan's comment)

I strongly feel that this report is bias, unfair and deliberately targeted towards making people believe that hardly anybody in the country speaks our native language Gaeilge.

  • Comment removed

  • (Cont. McGeehan)

I myself speak the language, as well as my son and hundreds more I personally know throughout the country.

My father at 16 didnt speak a word of English until he went to England to work back in the 50s. I was taught through Gaeilge, my text books were in Gaelige and I am not from a large strong Gealtacht.

I live in London now and when I meet anybody from Eire who has Irish and there are quite a few it becomes our language of choice in our conversations.

  • (Cont. McGeehan)

The producers of this joke of a report would have known from their research the vast area in this country that do speak Gaeilge, and choose to go to the biggest area that doesnt speak Gaeilge. Even today in my parish at home there are children who start school at four years old who do not speak English, they learn it at school.

The producers of this report should be made to recognize that the reason only a third of our population can speak our language is not due to cultural

  • (Cont. McGeehan)

ignorance on our behalf but because of the English spending hundreds of years trying to kill it along with our culture. The best way to eradicate the Irish problem was to eradicate the Irish language and culture.

They saw the Irish famine as a blessing and a mean to kill our language through death, immigration and submission through the soup kitchens where in many cases the Irish could only receive food if they stop speaking Irish and changed their names in to English.

  • (Cont)

Many a time Ive been in Dublin where this report was made and was on public transport were strangers beside me are talking in Irish to each other or on the phone.

If only the report had went west. No harm to the east coast but you must remember our history, after Cromwell killed more people in Ireland that the famine and immigration combined, he then deported another 500,000 more and the English then evicted nearly the entire east cost population and moved them west across the Shannon,

  • (Continuation)

so they were contain and settled at the east coast, bring in their langage. That is one of the reasons why there are very few Gaeilge speaking areas on the east coast, where this report was filmed.

How would the Dutch feel if we went over there and made a bias report saying that 90% of the population in the Netherlands smoked marijuana and the porn and red light districts are in every area, by just filming the report in the areas where these activaties are happening.

  • If the decline of Irish is the Brits' fault, how come the reGaelification of ireland since the 1920's has been such a flop? Deep down, I fear that the Irish simply don't feel the need for it, and have a ready made excuse for not learning it.

  • When the interviewer met Irish speakers they would have laughed at her horrible South Dublin, faux American accent. She couldn't even pronounce the words correctly. As an Irish speaker I can only say that she was pretty much speaking gibberish. The only person worse is Kevin "WWI-ILoveTheQueen- Lets join the Commonwealth" Myers. What an English cunt! Oh yeah, fuck of Holland, you German cunts. I would say mind your own business but you're the next country for Anglo-Saxon assimilation.

  • hmm, sounds like german and danish mixed together. haha :D simply amazing

  • I hope you noticed that the first 15sec were not in Gaelic but in Dutch. Same for the commentary from 1:10 and for the subtitles..

(just making sure you're not confusing Dutch for a Celtic language)

  • aah failure. :D meh, i was probably very tired :P xD

  • Latin is a dead language too, but there ARE some ppl that still learn it. i mean, me and my bf wanna learn Gaelic, and i'm sure other ppl do too. it's never too late to revive a language. (:

  • Yeah, as you can prolly tell, in Ireland there are several tv stations that are only in Gaelic.

  • Gaelic Brod!

  • Don't get angry with Myers who does reflect a lot of the same sentiment in Ireland. Instead you should resolve to learn as much of your language as possible. Scots Gaelic or Irish.. Go n-eiri libh..

  • If more people don't speak the indigenous language of Ireland it's only because the English and puppets like Kevin Myers have done everything they can for 8 centuries to destroy it. And then they have the nerve to say it's a "dead language." Well, Kev...you better think again...

    Go hIfreann leat!

    Tiocfaidh ar la!

  • The decline of the language had nothing to do with the british rule. The brittish rule strenghtened the language, Irish politicians, the clery and the national school system were the main contributers to the decline. Stop blaming the English for something that happened years ago and does not effect us in any way today. And by the way, Thainig ar la, ta siochan againn anois, nach bhfuil se sin go leor duit?

  • HMM, just a while ago I stated over a debate that the English have changed the culture and language of every place they ever "visited" and called it theirs.....

  • Sadly, Kevin Myers is only echoing the opinion of the vast majority of Irish people who see it as a pointless irrelevant language whose sole purpose is to provide cushy made-up jobs for the middle class elite.

  • Kevin Myers is a total cunt! He has NO time for Ireland OR Scotland, Ireland being a country on which he feels he has the right to comment on over Irish born people just because his parents were Irish and Scotland who he regards as 'the laziest nation in Europe, completely dependent on England and a country where only a minority of the people work'

WHY are they taking the opinion of a man who clearly has NO time for Celtic culture or anything which isn't 'British'.

  • kevin myers is a CUNT.. totally anti anything got to do with being irish.. hes not even from ireland, hes english!! why the fuck does he get an opinion on this??? hes a cunt whose famous for being a cunt.

  • @neilhosey 'Cause he's a douchebag who wants to promote the world speaking only English. It's a workin' language. Its a livin' language if its used. Fuck, people speak Esperanto and that's made up of a buncha languages.

  • @neilhosey The Irish are born with hatred to the English. And with good damn reason.

  • @slingshotmcoy

I'm half english and I won't usually admit it. I look irish, I was raised irish, I speck like a broke ass irish american, etc.

  • stop crying, the english aint all that bad you racist ira cunt!

  • @gohodohji Yes, a white person not liking a white person is o so racist. I might as well wear the white cloak and go around hating white people.

I hate the English because there is not one English i have met that was not a complete cunt to me. And I live in America. Obviously I am in the IRA, being in America.

  • @slingshotmcoy why?

  • and..."Chlanna nan con Thigibh" mean?...im a Cameron
