I don't regard this as a porno at all. Yes, it's exceedingly explicit on the nudity and naughtiness front, but Caligula existed once, he was a real, living crazy bitch-ass tryant. Porn generally neglects to embrace plotlines of any kind, while this production has a significant plot. This is a period drama that happens to be rife with tits, arse and willies ^_^

Caligula was recognized by the general Roman population as a descendant of the goddess Venus. He was told he was a God by the wisest men of the time and therefore believed it.

Caligula attempted to put a statue of himself in a Hebrew Jewish Temple around 2,000 years ago, at the time he received a great deal of criticism from Jews in the Southern Roman provinces. In modern day times the Jews who run Hollywood often attempted to portray Caligula as a monster. However a great deal of this film is historically inaccurate. Caligula in reality was victimized, his family were murdered by his enemies and once he gained power logically took great revenge.

Also, though the pre-release version removes Guccione's hardcore scenes, they are replaced with Brass's softcore scenes, still remaining true to the authenticity of Caligula's life. You can't make a movie like this without having at least softcore scenes. LOL!

Yes, it is sad that Bob Guccione fucked this movie up. Luckily, the Imperial Edition of "Caligula" has both his version and the original Tinto Brass version that doesn't have the hardcore scenes and the editing is MUCH better. This pre-release version truly in essence is "Caligula: The Director's Cut" where McDowell and Helen Mirren give fantastic audio commentaries. This is the "Caligula" that should have been released. Watch both versions and see the difference!
