Technically, The 4th gen dragons weren't the trio. Mesprit, Azelf, and Uxie are the 4th gen trio. They're all found in caves in lakes. Plus, one of them is a roaming pokemon.

The seccond, the Kami trio has the first two with identical base stats plus the seccond taking a note from rayquaza and being stronger than the other two.

The dragons must be included as a trio; each of them were a version mascot, identical 150-120-120-100-100-90 Base stats with a 680 base stat total (not even Kyogre, Groudon and Rayquaza have that), each are dragon type and each can be created by Arceus in HeartGold/SoulSilver. While the lake guardians are also a trio, but the roaming idea is a miss. No trio has contained ONLY one roamer. They are both legendary trios.

dialga and palkia and arceus are bad guys, darkrai and giratina are good guys

Arceus only attacked because it wanted revenge for almost dying in the far past. Palkia and Dialga constantly fight but help Ash and friends by preventing the betrayal. Giratina protects Ash and friends from Arceus's rage after being reminded of the previous time Ash saved teh Reverse World. Darkrai however only helped but failed in trying to stop Dialga and Palkia fighting.

Darkrai is still cool. He goes through different personality changes. In PMD, he's the final boss (well, in EOD he is). In the show, he doesn't speak, but is only at canalave city because its attracted to the machine Team Rocket set up. In the Movie, he's just one of the good guys who was misunderstood. Eventually, they find out he's only trying to help, and he does his best to stop Dialga and Palkia's fighting. Unfortunately, he can only give Ash enough time to get to the top of the tower.
