While costing slow through traffic. I pulled my clutch and dropped my gears down to first and gave it full throttle three times in traffic. Showing off mu loud exhaust. I released the clutch for a take off and the muffler shot right off the bike and I lost a lot of acceleration. The engine shut off. To my right there was an officer standing next to his cruiser just laughing his ass off a me. I stopped my bike next to a park and went back for the muffler. Trying to play it off that it was hot.

California bikers need to be aware of the laws regarding exhaust systems. If your pipes have any kind of internal baffle or restriction, then it's a bogus ticket. There are two laws they can cite you for violating. They do not carry decibel meters nor conduct noise tests, so they can only ticket you if your pipes are wide open, thus making them illegal under the statute requiring all engines to be equipped with mufflers.

Wow, a new police 'ticketing for cash' scheme that I'm actually happy about.
Not every motorcycle is unbearably loud, but the few that are are 'bleed your ears' loud. Even the more normal motorcycles makes me grind my teeth every time I hear them.
Finally, the government is actually doing something for taxpayers instead of forcing the police to arrest schoolkids for 'sexting'.

California bikers need to be aware of the laws regarding exhaust systems. If your pipes have any kind of internal baffle or restriction, then it's a bogus ticket. There are two laws they can cite you for violating. They do not carry decibel meters nor conduct noise tests, so they can only ticket you if your pipes are wide open, thus making them illegal under the statute requiring all engines to be equipped with mufflers.

I have some idiot that lives by me who has a pos truck that is louder than hell and the moron gets up and goes to work at 5:30 every morning. But he goes to bed early too. Last week I poured about 5 gallons of regular in his diesel, and I have seen or heard that pos since. I wonder what happened. It was worth $20 just for at least one week of peaceful sleeping. I'll do it again if necessary.

That is the stupidest fucking thing. What was the cop using to measure the pipe's decibel level? I never saw a meter or anything to confirm it's over the accepted level. I would be curious if any of those tickets stand up in court since the officer didn't actually confirm a violation of the law.

I have Cobra's on my V-Star. Not very loud, just a nice rumble. They were a 5 out of 10 for noise in 2001. Now that these twits are running Mega phone exhausts, my Cobras are a 2 out of 10. I've had friends stand on a sidewalk and witness me driving by. They say it is a nice tone ! Not loud at all !

There was this really loud guy in the neighborhood. He used to love gunning his bike on his way to work (very early) every morning till he "ran" into a bunch of bricks that had apparently "fallen" off of a construction truck one day- A broken arm and a busted eye socket later...the asshole moved.

I'm aware of the theory behind a loud pipe saving someones life.. but in the 4 years I've been driving I have never once be alerted to a motorcycle being anywhere near my car because of the noise. I also ride a cbr600 with a full two brothers exhaust.. prob not as loud as a pipe.. but loud enough.. Dont say it saves lives when 9/10 cruisers I see have no helmet or leathers on.. if you want to save your life shell out the cash for a decent exhaust and some safe gear lol.
