I was doing some research on the octahedron last night and I was VERY Fearless; bold; brave today and my 22 year old cat passed away this morning... so I guess its just fitting I would be reflecting now
i wonder what the man himself could have done with todays kickass technology.
the whole point in his work is that it only works in 2 dimensions though. he plays with the fact that the observer is forced to view his world from a fixed perspective, so rendering it in to 3d loses the magic.
theres another way to do it. make a right triangle and bend the hypotenuse so it curves from horizontal to vertical. theres a google sketchup model on the wikipedia entry of the imposible triangle (Penrose triangle).
You might be able to request a free eval. Students can get it for free if they use it for class, but there's a fee for commercial use. You can get more information on the SpaceClaim web site.
