I think you have every right not to believe, but it's worth knowing that if ever you're facing the world alone, somebody is always there for you. I take comfort through the many trials in life in that I am never alone, and whilst you may not believe, I ask that you bear in mind God is always waiting if you ever you find yourself in a difficult situation in life :)
Db, I understand you. But taking comfort in a belief that you want to be true does not make it fact. I would like to take comfort in knowing there is a loving power above, but then it is scary to think of a jealous power that condemns non believers despite good deeds or moral living. To me, faith is the same as hope. We wish for a certain destiny, but knowing what will come to pass can not be seen, and if it could I'd move to Vegas.

But I think a problem with many 'religious' and non-religious people are that they try to place God in a box, with a set, narrow definition. The bible does mention that non-believers may face 'damnation', but what is belief? Surely if you live morally and by good deeds, you are living through the spirit of good will, so believing in morality and good?
I think you have hit on something important. Living the life of good would be the right path, whether or not a person is a "believer". I would think that there is enough room in heaven for those people even if they didn't believe in God. Deeds speak louder than words. An atheist could have the same chance of the heavenly reward as a bible preacher at the end of the day. This is what I surmise from you post, but if I am wrong, let me know. I don't know if I'm atheist, btw. Just don't know.

hell is very real, very scary and very tormenting. Christians are who they are so they can choose eternal life over pain, misery and eternal death. Hell isn't just a pull. Christians try to tell the world about Jesus and His indescribable love so others won't have to endure hell.
My thought on this is that perhaps we've created an idea of hell because we hope that the real evil folks get some severe punishment for what they have done to humanity. "Faith without deeds is useless" (James 2:20) - if one who claims to be a believer has no evidence, then they might not be saved.
Whether your Jewish, Christian, or Muslim, your little books/scrolls all tell the same story, they just word it differently and use different names.

God's / Jesus's love is quite conditional. He says "I love you" but then he gives us a message which says "But if you dont love me, you will go to hell". Think about that.
Dear dolorismachina2 - Jesus paid the price for us to get to Heaven - if we accept His free gift paid for with his own blood, then we can make it to Heaven. Only perfection can make it to Heaven, and only He is perfect - so it's not that He will just throw us to hell if we don't love Him, it's just that He makes us perfect through His blood so we can make it there. So hard to explain - but yes, He does love us so much - more than we can ever know.
Alright. But let me ask you very easy question. If he realy loves us more than we can ever know, why dose he let people to make wars? How about third world countries facing poverty and lacks of food? Db, I understand you. But taking comfort in a belief that you want to be true does not make it fact. I would like to take comfort in knowing there is a loving power above, but then it is scary to think of a jealous power that condemns non believers despite good deeds or moral living. To me, faith is the same as hope. We wish for a certain destiny, but knowing what will come to pass can not be seen, and if it could I'd move to Vegas.

It's nice to be able to discuss without arguing :) I definitely see where you're coming from - I've thought the same things too. But I think a problem with many 'religious' and non-religious people are that they try to place God in a box, with a set, narrow definition. The bible does mention that non-believers may face 'damnation', but what is belief? Surely if you live morally and by good deeds, you are living through the spirit of good will, so believing in morality and good?

I think you have hit on something important. Living the life of good would be the right path, whether or not a person is a "believer". I would think that there is enough room in heaven for those people even if they didn't believe in God. Deeds speak louder than words. An atheist could have the same chance of the heavenly reward as a bible preacher at the end of the day. This is what I surmise from you post, but if I am wrong, let me know. I don't know if I'm atheist, btw. Just don't know.

Oh no, that is what I meant. I'm glad I made sense, lol, I have a tendency to ramble. Well, at least it's what I personally believe. At the end of the day, no one can really know the basis of God's judgement. I think it's great you could keep such an open mind :) and definitely, I believe, faith is such a personal thing, that if it is to be discovered, it should not be through another's influence but through your own self discovery. I hope, though, I have opened a new window of thought for you.

I understand that this is core to your belief system. To me, the whole blood and death thing isn't in my beliefs and I don't get the whole salvation thing either. But in the end, we'll find out the truth anyhow. You claim to know the truth now and you may be right. I will never say you are wrong or that I'm right. The best I can come up with is I don't know. I respect the surety that you have, but to me it doesn't make sense. I do wish peace for all good folks like us, though. :-)

Many 'believers' convey faith through words only. It's not enough just to believe, it's living the belief. Many are in situations where they have not been exposed to the idea of God, so cannot believe. It strikes me as odd to strike them down, as God must have had his reasons for creating them.... I don't know. Other theists may think I don't know what I'm talking about, lol, but that's what I'd like to believe.

Jump, you are absolutely correct. It is discouraging to see insults one way or the other, as if one person's beliefs or non beliefs threaten another's. If the faith is that strong, then contrarian views should not anger the other side of the issue. Weakness or uncertainty breed anger, contempt and conflict. I want no part of that.

Not buying it. I think it all comes from the fear of dying and hoping there is a reward after. I get that. But if that is all religion is about, then it makes no sense to me. Out of fear, comes belief in something unproven. Makes us feel better, even if maybe it's not true. It's sort of like a pacifier, at least it seems to me. Then again, I make no claims to know and you could be right. I'm honest here. I put nobody down and respect everyone's beliefs. I just don't see it.

Exactly. I don't need to call someone an idiot or sad because they think differently than I do. I'd like to know what your definition of God is and if it is the only definition that is true. I guess what I'm after is are we controlled by God, do we have free will, are we punished for merely not being observant the way someone tells us we have to be? This is a dilemma in my mind, because I'm not so sure one way or the other. Questioning is good, I think. Being open is good too.

My thought on this is that perhaps we've created an idea of hell because we hope that the real evil folks get some severe punishment for what they have done to humanity. I don't know if there is such a place. I'm pretty non religious. The question I have is who is worthy to go to such a place? Is there a litmus test of some sort? Do I have to be a believer to escape such a sentence or can I be a good person and still end up there because you don't like me? Just wondering aloud.

we're told about the Trinity (Father, Son & Spirit) in 2 Corinthians 13:14, etc.
to my knowledge Jesus never called Himself God, but He made it very clear that He was the Son of God.
now when you think about it, why should God be completely understandable to us? if He's truly God and we're just mere people, shouldn't He be very different from us? we are each one person, but He is three Persons - Father, Son and Spirit. it's tough to understand, but they're all God.

yup. the Godhead, is a shorter term to call him. the trinity works together. there is the father-who taks care of his son and looks toward the spirit to do it. the spirit-who helps the son look up to his father and the son-looks up to both of them because they help him through life. there are so many trinities in the world. but this one is the biggest.

in Luke 16 Jesus tells the story of a rich man who goes to hell and a poor man, Lazarus, who goes to heaven. in verse 27 the rich man cries out to Abraham (who's also in heaven) to send a witness back to his family who are still living, but Abraham responds that " 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead' " (Luke 16:31).

What if a good person, an atheist scientist who has devoted his entire life to creating cures/vaccines for/against various terrible diseases, and did it to help others dies, does god send him to hell for not believing in him, or reading the bible? Or does he notice the fact that this person has actually devoted his life for others?

we also have to realize that we're saved by grace through faith NOT of works (Ephesians 2:8-9) - we can't DO anything to be accepted by God; we simply must have faith.
now not every Christian will devote their life to curing diseases and such, but we are told in Galatians 5:22-23 about the fruit (evidence) of the Holy Spirit in a believer's life. "Faith without deeds is useless" (James 2:20) - if one who claims to be a believer has no evidence, then they might not be saved.

Dear dolorismachina2 - Jesus paid the price for us to get to Heaven - if we accept His free gift paid for with his own blood, then we can make it to Heaven. Only perfection can make it to Heaven, and only He is perfect - so it's not that He will just throw us to hell if we don't love Him, it's just that He makes us perfect through His blood so we can make it there. So hard to explain - but yes, He does love us so much - more than we can ever know.

God does want to help you. But maybe not in the way you want it. God looks beyond that.

He didn't fail, oh no, he didn't. Even though He was human, He was God, too! He didn't sin in his entire life. One sin would have been fatal, but He didn't!!! And for that we thank our lives! We are loved and saved! Our God is an awesome God!! HE LIVES!!!!!!
