This one and Mercy street send chills down my spine. Listen to them at 3 in the morning with the lights out. Then play Somewhere down that Crazy River by Robbie Robertson.
Good song, very scary thought though. Milgram's results scare the hell out of all of us I think. And knowing about the experiment I cant help but hear this as a very sinister kind of song.
Yes, in the past the people have done only what they were told to do. today, some can't make a difference between right and wrong. they do waht they were told.
we do what were told. don't question authority be a good little sheeple(: bahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! some power trip took out the video of chemtrails being done to all of us.
milgram's 37 we do what we're told we do what we're told we do what we're told told to do we do what we're told we do what we're told we do what we're told told to do one doubt one voice one war one truth one dream
The last two songs of So aren't as great as other parts of the album, but still hold up well enough. This track is one of them, Peter Gabriel's creativity at work yet again.
@waypor1 Your "explanation" is wrong on so many levels. There is no transgression implied, spoken, written or sung, nor is their any endorsement or indictment made of ANY economic system. Nice attempt at vilifying capitalism though.
Unfortunately, the perceived transgressors of the collective of socialism have always been dealt a MUCH worse penalty than the 63% in Milgram's study - see the Killing Fields and Stalin's Purges for examples in recent history.
@purpledynasty You are simply mistaken, transgression is all about control such as was your comment attempting to seduce me to your own view, you first must truly understand what transgression means which is simply a form of control due to the fact that people share no common understanding to the effects of comparison or one up man ship, being deeper than the superficial nature of most peoples understanding...Transgression is the root toall repression when people buy in. Physical mental duress
@waypor1 Measuring to an external authority is a distraction forming an identity which no one sees but the self, it is the illusion thats all there is to it, the thing is that being told rather than learning by our own curiosity rather than because we have to in order to comply to the Egonomic Machine as a transfer of our forage occupation, economics is all about force in the compliance to the law countering the principles of our nature.
I don't know why everyone keeps talking about Miami Vice. Neither the title nor information of this video mention it. Anyway, I just love Peter Gabriel. He's a musical genius.
Peter Gabriel wrote this song in reference to the Milgram experiments, where 40 people were instructed to give electric shocks to others x he carried it out after studys of war criminals under the hitler regime ! x
@kezanddaz1 it's not 40, but 37. yes, it is because he wanted to study why millions of Germans blindly obeyed orders in the mass slaughter of the Jews during world ward II.strange, but that's what alws happened when ppl r under the power of the ruling authority.i studied this for my learning and the learner subject.
I just heard this song on Miami Vice (as already suggested by others in this discussion, the exact episode is: season 3, episode 11: 'Forgive Us Our Debts'). Just as jeffsmonte described, this song was so entrancing that I had to look it up and hear it again.
@jeffsmonte totally agree. The song fitted in well with that episode. One of the top 3 Miami Vice episodes for me, coming from a big Miami Vice fan too
@jeffsmonte forgive us our debts is the episode and for my money it was one of the 1st occasions where the good guys didn't win on a cop show Manipulation at its best great episode...
i never saw the chocolate war so I don't know what any of you are talking about BUT i do remember watching an episode of Miami Vice, that TV show in the 80s with Don Johnson and in the episode, Crockett and Tubbs have a death row prisoner released but it turns out he duped them. he really was guilty and the Miami guys felt really dumb and this was the song that was played at the very end of that episode. It will always remind me of that.
That episode was the precursor to one of the best downward spiral/main character story arcs in TV history. Miami Vice really had something special about it.
@durpadoo - I was 1 when that episode aired. Boy are you stupid!? And if I haven't seen it - it's a spoiler. Ever heard of looking back and catching up?
God bless the Fairlight CMI.

what was the arc, was that sonny losing his memory, or a different thread for his character - it's been too long for me

saberblock might be talking about Sonny losing his memory but he/she might also mean Down For The Count 1 & 2 as well.

The episode was "Forgive us our debts" with Guy Boyd as the bad guy(Frank Hackman) In a later episode he killed Crockett's wife.(Sheena Easton)
