STOP CRITICISING HIS CHOICE OF GRIP!!! Judges don't look at what kind of grip the snares are playing with, so why should it matter what grip you play with??? Use whatever grip you are best at!!! CHOICE OF GRIP is NOT on the judges' score cards, but how well you play is, no matter what grip you use. One of our snares this year sucked at traditional, so my band director told him to play everything with matched grip.

It's impossible to play cleanly with one snare playing with matched while the others are traditional, and vice-versa. Everyone on the line needs to be playing EXACTLY the same as everyone else on the line or it will be dirty, and that's that. If everyone is playing matched, or if everyone is playing traditional, fine. It doesn't matter which one, so long as it sounds good and everyone on the line is the same. It's his drumming that sucks, not the grip.

I started on mallets, did it for 3 years, final year, snare. But I can play tenors at a slightly below moderate level, same with bass. And I do it with proper STYLE too. So, this guy probably knows how to play them all as well.
