  • Great video, well done. Thanks for your time!

  • Keep in mind if your 1911 has a free floating barrel, the disassembly goes a bit differently.

  • The first step is to eject the magazine, NOT check the chamber. Someone who is not used to guns may watch this and then unintentionally and unknowingly chamber a round. That is not a dis-assembly. you took the slide off. most parts were still in the gun. The 1911 is unlike other handguns because it has a lot more internal parts which should be maintained often. You have failed to show how to do this, and worst of all you call it a dis-assembly.

  • Good video, appreciate the tips on reassembly so I don't have re-invent the wheel. You're a good man.

  • Dropping the slide without a round inside shouldn't hurt anything. Firing pins are thin and fragile, hence the reason you don't dry fire the gun.

  • damn now i want one... :/

  • Great video! However I cringed just a little when you slammed the slide without a round in the chamber. I found that it reeks hell on the innards

  • everyone talks about how hard it is to depress that spring but for some reason I have never had any problems with my springfield ro

  • you won't dry fire your gun but you will drop the slide on an empty chamber

  • great video I have one of these coming and its always good to know about the gun gun before you get it

  • first time i did it the spring retainer flew through the room as i rotated the barrel bushing...that was the most frustrating part for me...so be careful...you dont want it to get in your eyes.

  • The technical term for the part you depress at the beginning of dis-assembly is 'spring retainer thingamajig'. FYI.

  • A great way to avoid using any tools (swiss army knife or otherwise) to field strip a 1911 is to use the back edge of the magazine to depress the recoil spring plug.

  • Great video - the tip with the safety is great - certainly isn't mentioned in my manual anywhere!

  • great vid, now i can clean the 1911 my grandfather used in WWII!

  • @morfin2300 in certain firearms dry firing can put harmful stress on the parts, however unless it's a competition gun, i wouldn't trust a gun that couldn't be dry fired most combat pistol can

  • The first step in breaking down a weapon is ensuring it's unloaded.

  • @morfin2300 It's just like regular firing but with no ammo. It's just wasting the life span of the firing pin. Not so much on the centerfires, but with the rimfires.

  • chubby hands for a small gun? is it still easy to shoot though?

  • Nice vid. What is your opinion of the Rock Island 1911?

  • Good job! It was helpful to see all the details. Because one part step in the assembly was a little difficult, I could see where I could run into trouble and how to get out. You made some good suggestions that were new to me and I've disassembled my 1911s dozens of times.

  • This video is extraordinarily helpful. Thanks so much for producing it and making it available.

  • Great Video and great tips....I've sure learned a lot and wanted to thank you for taking the time to produce it.

  • @morfin2300 With most centerfire firearms, nothing. Rimfires however, dry firing can ruin the firing pin.

  • I appreciate your demonstration of the assembly and disassembly of the 1911. I will be watching more of your videos and thank you for doing such a good job.

    Paul C.

  • Thanks alot dude. You actually took the time to explain, unlike all the other useless hobos that show you with some lame music over the vid. I picked up a RIA M1911, but I've been getting the bastard/stepfather treatment with it and been getting some feeding issues. I think it's the magazine, anyone know a good place I can order some replacement mags?

  • Thank you. Got my RIA tactical finally and this helped. Good info.

  • Fabio couldve used this video

  • This was helpful. Thanks

  • anyone else cringe when he let the slide slam?

  • Buy a revolver, no need to ever field strip ;)

  • 9:45 u dont have to have that straight up and down, just push it foward and it will all line up.

  • 3.00 spring bushing maybe?

  • is that a Rock Island Armory 1911, if so how is she?

  • @hcdub, LMAO!

  • I bought a Springfield 1911 and this video is very informative. I'm going to use this video to oil my gun then I'm going to shoot a round right up my neighbor's dog's ass!

  • Great Video! Very Direct w/out a lot of Talking 'Off Topic'... Great Camera work as well! Thanx for this

  • Excellent job on the video.I just bought a new Sig Sauer1911 and I have been a little nerves about taking it apart..After watching this video I had no problems..Thank you very much for sharing this with all of us..Take care and keep you powder dry..

  • thanks for field strip

  • oh! you have the multifunction knife in 127 Hours !!!

  • @lunchboxbandits - NOTE: You do not NEED any special tools. Browning designed the 1911 to be completely dismantled without any "extra" tools. Several of the parts from the gun act as "tools" to disassemble others. Example, the base of a standard magazine works to depress the recoil spring plug - it fits curve in the barrel bushing -- so you don't need your Swiss army knife. I don't know, but can a Glock be totally dismantled (not just field stripped) without tools?

  • I find it interesting you dont like to drop the hammer, yet you have no problem slamming the slide home on an empty chamber, and you let the recoil spring bind against the bushing as you turn it,. Not a big deal, but it can over time loosen the tolerances there which can affect accuracy. The releasing the slide on an empty chamber thing allegedly isnt good for it, so I avoid it. Ive never thought to click on the safety, that would slmplify the process a little bit. Good tip. Nice gun too.

  • Great video man, thank you! I was wondering if any oil is needed on any of these parts before I put it back together. Thanks

  • Search up tacome1942 and he made a full sized fully functioning 1911 that shoots live rounds out of paper..

  • Damn guns knives and zippo's I'm not messin with u

  • have a llama 380 which takes down like the 1911,i know this now after watching this great video,to tell the truth i was getting ate up till i watched your show and now i can do it,but will put this in my favorites if i have any trouble in the future.thank you cutlerylover for your help.

  • I just wanted to thank you for your video. This was a great, clear visual instruction on how to disassemble and reassemble my new 1911. Turns out, I had the same problem with the small piece for the slide lock falling as well, and your video was instrumental in my fixing the problem. Nicely done!

  • i like your gun.. a PHILIPPINE-MADE gun..

    well, based from wikipedia.. :-)

  • Thanks for posting this video. It's very helpful.

  • I watched your video so that I didn't look like an idiot when going into a few local gun shops to buy my first 1911. Thanks - appreciate it.

  • Great job. Love the tip about the safety use for both disassembling and assembling. A tip I gleaned from You Tubes is when you have finally secured the spring/guide rod, drop a pencil into the barrel and pull the trigger. If the pencil pops out, all is done correctly.

  • ha..sry I was trying to help out the guy below me..I actually just cleaned my RIA tactical two-tone only hours ago..I liked your review enough to try one out ;-) ...oh yeh no disappointments here

  • By the way..I've seen the others..I like ur disassembly/assembly video the best..simple, to the point, perfect...thanks bro

  • I thought that Ops M.R.P. was an airsoft gun! I realize many airsoft guns are authentic replicas, but I couldnt find a M.R.P. that was chambered for .45, only BBs

  • @SirSmok3Alot225 its an RIA, not a MRP...

  • @SirSmok3Alot225

Thanks for teaching me to field strip my 1911

  • Man! There is this gun I have. I disimbeled it and couldnt put it back together. It's because when I pulled it got stuck. I don't know what model it is but in the side it says ops-M.R.P cal45 and in the other side it says P.202. Can someone help me?

  • nice work man! the kimber i have disassembles just like this!

  • not all 1911's break down the same way. Most kimbers do not break down the same way

  • I am getting ready to clean mine for the first time and looked at many 1911 videos. Yours is the best! :)

  • Thanks for the video, mate! You just made disassembling my first 1911 a breeze. The extra tips (locking the slide) were very helpful!

  • 3:15, that's what she said. ;)

  • Just bought my first 1911, this was very helpful. Thank you!

  • hêy_Î_fÉël_sõ_lônélý_tÖdÂý

  • A tool to field strip a pistol? No wonder why people love Glock

  • @lunchboxbandits I didn't need a tool...

  • @Smokeyvette Victorian Nox Tinker, screwdriver, or that rubber thing you mentioned at the beginning. Now I love 1911s but if I had to choose only one it would be Glock. But lets thank the Constitution we dont need to choose only one, but unfortunately my wallet doesn't allow me the same liberties . other then that, great breakdown vid

  • @lunchboxbandits I didn't mention anything. I am a man, and can strip my weapons without any tools...

  • @Smokeyvette Lol, no you didnt. Cutlerylover did, lol sorry.

  • Those hands have held quite a few burgers in their day.

  • wow it helps me a lot especially the technic in returning the lock, im having a hard time to return it into place... thanks a lot

  • thanx. very great info.

  • you could always just put a cloth over the screwdriver if you are worried about the finish

  • I'd use the stock GI recorle spring plug with a short guide spring rod instead on a full leanth, it works a hell of alot better and gives you another way of racking the slide

  • Used this on my Taurus PT1911 and worked perfect, you were very descriptive and loved your step by step. Thanks for the video!

  • never stick yout finger in the ejection port when the slide is racked back. it could end badly.

  • "of course, the first thing you want to do on any gun is to check it to make sure it's not loaded."

So why didn't you do that first, of course?

  • @turdismiller I was JUST about to write that. GOOD CALL

  • @turdismiller probly cuz hes not an idiot and he knows the status of his weapons and doesnt need to prove to the youttube safety sallies that the gun is clear.

  • very good field strip. Highly technical.

  • Is there a reason you rack the slide before stripping it?

Also, I saw another video by hickok45 where he says to keep the barrel link down when putting it back in..you do yours facing up. Any reason for this? Is this because you have an extended guide rod?

  • How do you like your Rock Island? i have heard some mixed reviews

  • Nice job! Very well done!

  • I found that the butt of a magazine works well to remove that piece as well. Generally they are plastic so you don't have to worry about it scratching up the finish as much as a screwdriver and they are always there to use.

    Great video by the way!

  • Thank you for such an informative video. I just purchased a Springfield 1911 Trophy Match and was worried about field stripping it. You were so clear and concise. It was a pleasure to watch.

  • I've heard that dry firing a 1911 isn't bad at all, and that its actually the proper way to drop the hammer in an empty chamber. Am I mistaken?

  • Hi cutlery - very well done & easily understood 5 stars. How many round do you have thru it so far? Is it broken in? I am considering it as a purchase. I'd appreciate your advice. Thanks. Sincerely, JAMES.

  • Great video for this 1st time 1911 owner, thank you !

  • Pushing that slide lock lever down and in to click in place is scratching your frame. I use that screwdriver tool/ knife edge to push in that pin and then the slide lock lever falls into place without scratching the frame on mine.

  • thanks man you are a good help!!!, for gun lovers!

  • Thanks for not using all the tech part names during the take down. My wife purchase a Kimber Rapter ll as a gift from Turner's.

Do you have cleaning tips? Cleaning Brands, etc...

    Thanks again.

  • @Empidai The type of product you use do very a tad based on usage bc different cleaners, oils, and greases have their advantages. But if you are just a regular user like myself I use Hoppes #9 as my cleaner and Rem Oil (by Remington) as my oil of course. Im going to get a gun grease soon to put on my rails bc it stays put longer at higher temps (due to friction) than oil does. Both Rem oil and Hoppes are at walmart in the sporting goods section. You cant go wrong w/ those two...

  • super useful vid. My Dad's old Gold Cup had a view variations but all the principles were basically the same.

  • Thanks for the vid dude.I've owned 1911's for years & never even thought about turning the gun upside down to keep the barrel link in place..Thank You

  • wat kind of 1911 is it ????

  • I just got a RIA 1911.... my first 1911.... THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO!!! Very helpful.

    Thanks again!

  • Inserting the barrel pin can be a pain when doing reassembly in the dark. Having practice with that (I can manage a field strip/ rebuild in under 2 mins blindfolded) I'd say once you have the dissassembly notch on the slide lined up with the hole on the frame you can lean the gun back towards the hammer and the barrel link will kind of fall into place for the slide stop pin to go through. Gravity will hold the link in place against the frame of the pistol just in front of the magazine chamber.

  • I had been told that dropping the hammer like that can mess up the engagement surfaces. Dry firing doesn't hurt this design that much anyway.

  • Great video! I love the M1911 and plan on getting one in the future some time. This video will help me in keeping it clean and functioning perfectly for quite some time. :)

  • Good video, well narrated even tho you don't have all the proper terms down. Easy on the ears... Some videos make me cringe listening to their babble.

Can you do a video for the lower receiver?

    Thanks

  • thank you for this video

  • just wanted to say thanks for uploading your video it was a big help

  • Never let the slide slam down on an empty chamber, You should pull it back and ease it closed. You can damage the face if you let it slam home. You should either have a live round or a snap cap if you do that.

  • Unlocked for free, with the rest available for an in app purchase of one USD each. Availiable on the app store but not the android yet.

  • I recommend highly that if you have any problems with disassembling any of your guns, at least the more popular guns, including the glock17 and the Colt M1911 (yes to all trolls, I know his isn't colt, but I'm stating the model, not the brand) to use the respective app called "gun name here" disassembly, or to use the "main" app which has a total of eleven different guns to disassemble, operate, and reassemble (not in that exact order 0.0) which you start with o believe 3 pistols and an mp5 unl

  • is this gun worth 375 bucks?

  • @sovietsks45 Heck yes

  • excellent!

  • That piece on the barrel, you keep referring to, is the connecting link. It's a good idea not to let the 1911 slide drop on and empty chamber. The force of a sudden stop, when empty, can damage the the gun over time. It's okay to do when loading a round. Good video for beginner 1911 owners.

  • thanks,,, pretty simple,

  • could you make a video on how to disesemble the lower resiever?

  • What do you think of painting bright nail polish on the front blade sight?

  • Great video! Thanks.

  • Ive been looking for days for a decent, well lit, informative video on the 1911. This has got to be the best video on the disassembly and reassembly of the 1911. WELL DONE,SIR! WELL DONE!

  • Its a lot easier to assemble the gun with the guide spring and barrel inplace like you would on most modern handguns. Then you just worry about putting in the slide stop the right way.

BTW I just got this gun after drooling over your vid for a year now. Thanks!

  • 7 people tried this and shot themselves

  • 7 peopletried this and shot themselves

  • @himynameisedward1

I see what you did there... LOL

  • THanks for posting this vid - I am hoping to get a 1911 and I think the RI 1911 will be one I look at.

    Keep up the good work.

    :)

  • Nice detailed video. Thanks. I also have a RIA 1911, if you're interested search google for 1911 reliability secrets. good stuff!

The part you were refering to at min. 2:54 is called the "recoil spring reverse plug" :)

  • i just saw another video of a classic 1911 field strip..he has the loop down instead of straight up like yours. is this due to a difference in the model? doesn't seem like it tho...the vid is by hicock45 if you wanna see it...

  • @corismsyn sorry that's hickok45 not hicock45...

  • Great vid! I wanted to say that the reassembly is easier if the gun is upright. I've found that gravity kinda does its work on the swiveling part and keeps it down in position. Also, pushing the slide lock into place helps grab that part as well, even if it's a little off center.

Also, if you don't have a tool to take off the bushing, you could always use the butt plate of a mag. That works well too.

    Again, great vid.

  • Thanks man, just got a 1911 and your vid was very helpful :)

  • yo... tanx really so much i just field strip and clean my ria 1911 not all break tghe same way but it works bro tanx again

  • Nice job ! Years back I got my 1st 1911 and I had oiled it after purchase after stripping it. I got everything together but couldn't get the spring back in at all. Everytime I went to push it in it wold slip and fly out ! LOL. I think it was because my hands were oily. I just bought another 1911 Sig 45 and I do want to try field stripping. Hopefully this video should make it easier, thanks for the good instruction.

  • nice i like your video.im gonna learn frm you soon..im gonna disassembly my sti spartan..thank you for the video

  • Awesome breakdown!

  • The 1911 waa designed so that the only tool needed for complete deconstruction was a .45 casing.

  • thanks, I just bought a 1911 and needed some help on reassembly, great video

  • Thank you very much for the video. Fantastic job. By the way how do you like your Rock Island? My son is looking at one for his first 1911 purchase.

  • Thanks for the tips. Only part you missed was how to remove the ejector... It's pretty simple once you realize it goes out the back of the slide and not the front.

I just bought my first 1911 and I think we got the exact same model and variant judging from the video.

  • excellent vid...how has your 1911 held up so for cause im thiking of getting a rock island 1911

  • for a start when you pick up a pistol or any weapon you do your NSP's that's normal safety precautions, take the mag out first cock the top slide then hook it back look into the chamber to check for a round do not pull the slide back first before taking the mag out because that in effect cocks he weapon and makes it a hot gun. apart from that its a good vid keep up the good work

  • A dab of greese on that annoying little piece that keeps falling over will hold it in place.

  • great video thanks

  • Thanks a lot. You simplified it for me. My grandfather and I were trying to clean his 1911, it was like yours were it had that infernal ring rather than a cap, it took us like an hour to put it back on (which I find funny). I need to remember this video because even after we got the spring in, the slide can't be pulled back all the way, do you happen to know a possible cause of the problem? Also that is a really nice finish on your 1911.

  • dude nice job on the vid its helpful to beginner 1911 owners. however you should have probably shown the full disassembly of the frame/reciever instead of just the slide. thumbs up though.

  • Great useful and well explained video! A gun everyone should know how to disassembly! Thanks!

  • dude thank you so much !! a helpful video indeed :)

  • this video was great help and very easy to field strip my 1911 versus other videos i had watched great job and thanks alot.. jesseo77

  • cutlerylover, Have you shot and hollow point ammo in your RIA 1911 yet?. I notice from your take down video that the barrel apparently does not have a feed ramp, will this be a problem for hollow point ammo?.

  • Yeah Cutlerylover I agree with TheVVV888 I actually used your video to help me do my first field strip of my rock Island Armory. Although mine was a regular government model so some of our parts were different. However it was really imformative and got me out of a lot of jams with it no pun intended lol

  • The most easy to follow/understand 1911 take down video on the net.

  • My KWA 1911 (airsoft) actually has the same field strip steps (it jammed), thanks a bunch for this awesome guide!

  • true that TheVVV88 everyb other takedown of the 1911 takes down everything so all there is left is the skeleton of the gun

  • good video. But, One thing you did that made it harder on you is when you slid the slide and frame back together you had the gun upside down, which with that particular gun, allowed the barrel link to pivot out of position, especially when you set the gun down to grab something else. The way I do it, is when I'm reassembling, keep grip pointed down, as in a firing grip. This allows Gravity to help keep the link in position. Slide the slide on SLOW. Holes line up, replace pin enough to hold.

  • Thank You... This is one of , if not, the best 1911 take-down videos on utube - Well done!!!

  • @TheVVV88 thnak you very much for the nice comment, but I realize now there are lots of variations on the 1911 and not all break down the same way..

  • @cutlerylover I have a Kimber Eclipse Target II , purchased shortly after our new President took office... I cleaned it once upon purchase; then I cleaned for a second time recently after much use. I was to unable to reassemble after this recent second take-down. I watched many uTube videos on 1911 reassembly to no avail. I stumble upon your video, and presto, I was able to put it together...

Your video is lucid, well shot and very clearly narrated - Thanks for making it...

  • @TheVVV88 THAT PIECE TECH TERM IT'S CALLED A RECOIL SPRING PLUG

  • @TheVVV88 It's a good beginner 1911 owner video. That piece on the barrel is the connecting link. The part up front is the barrel bushing. It's a good idea to NOT drop the slide on an empty chamber of a 1911. That force can damage the gun. Of course it's okay when loading a round, that slows the slide enough to not cause damage. Nice job.

  • Who made this 1911, there should be an enclosure/cap so you can use your thumb, not a screwdriver.

  • @FatherTime1970 RIA...not all 1911's are exatly the same...

  • @cutlerylover QUESTION ON A NEW 1911 SHOULD I PUT THROUGH ABOUT 200 RDS THROUGH IT AS A BREAK IN BEFORE DOING AN INITICIAL CLEANING ON THE GUN OR FIELD STRIP FIRST THEN PUT THE 200 RDS THROUGH IT ?

  • @cutlerylover hey man you probably already know this but its kinda bad for your gun to release the slide on an empty chamber

  • @cutlerylover hey man you probably already know this but its kinda bad for your gun to release the slide on an empty chamber

  • @cutlerylover

Somebody's watched a few too many movies...

  • @FatherTime1970 If the 1911 has a full length guide rod, the recoil spring plug is milled out for the rod to slide through and can be difficult to press down by hand. If the guide rod is the stock, short one then the spring plug will have a solid face and be easier to press with your thumb.

My Taurus PT1911 came with the barrel bushing tool but I find it a lot easier, actually, to use the side of a magazine to depress the plug and just turn the bushing by hand...

  • @FatherTime1970

This applies to 1911's with Full length Guide rods. Those are the ones that have the tubes instead of a closed end cap for the spring.

  • That's only if the recoil spring guide rod is not full-length. A full-length guide rod protrudes from the bottom when the slide is pulled back, so an enclosure cap would stop the slide from moving backwards.

  • @FatherTime1970 I Have an RIA like this one and it doesn't have an enclosure cap like that. Mine has the standard cap that is checked on the end.

  • Thanks! I F'd this up because I tried to take the slide off with the recoil spring still in, and I didn't have a full length guide rod so the spring went flying as soon as I took the slide off and then I had one hell of a time getting the spring back in and the slide back on. It was my first time field stripping a 1911 so I guess I deserved it. Well now I shouldn't be able to screw it up in the future. So thanks for enlightening another idiot (me).

  • if u want to paint over the worn out finish take black spray paint and spray it on a Q-tip and gently go over the worn out finished area i do it to my 1911 and it looks brand new

  • i love that beaver tail grip safety. and the hammer looks cool

  • Dude I've been watching all your reviews, and this video has helped me a lot! Thanks to you, today i learned how to field strip my 1911 the right way. always had trouble on the same spot too! Thanks.

  • can you take the slide off first then do all that

  • Great video but Padna the very 1st thing you should have done before picking up the screwdriver and showing the end of the gun is to check to see if it was loaded. If I had done that as a kid the next 4 times we went dove hunting my Dad would have taken my gun away and I would have just picked the birds feathers as punishment, caught again and I wouldn't have hunted the rest of the season. Alway check the gun first and never, ever point a gun at anyone, even a cap gun!!! You cannot be too safe!!

  • cool! but isnt it different on a para ordnance ?

  • thanks man, you are a life saver
