  • I was at this concert in 89. It was probably the best show I've ever seen. (living so close to SPAC, I've seen quite a few) I got a heads up about the tickets going on sale and was fifth in line at the box office. We weren't on the floor, but the way the stage was set up, we could have almost reached out from our seats and touched Daltry. Amazing...

  • Simon Phillips just kills it in this. Amazing drumming.

  • Simon plays like Keith, if Keith were normal, which he just wasn't, which is why he was so great and so perfect for this band..the combination of genius in all of the Who is really even more unique when you consider their personalities.. and their acute senses of tone, playing style and creative imagination to carry P.T's BROAD ideas through...A Brilliant band..Simon is a badass dedicated Moon man without the drugs/alchohol.

  • This song always sends chills up my spine. I remember watching the concert at the Universal Ampitheater on PPV in 89

  • Nice close-ups of Simon Phillips on drums. He powered the Who greatly.

  • That drumkit is fucking huge.

  • best live band ever

  • thats simon phillips on drums...he destroys that wanker imposter zach starkey off the fookin map....this tour was one of the greatest of all times...i was there...they played 3 hours and 20 minutes solid.....u2 is a bar band compared to these blokes

  • This was The Who On Ice years...but not being old enough to have seen the original 4-piece set of Tommy, this was incredible. They also brought out the odd solo work ( Free Me by Roger, Too Late the Hero by John, A Little Is Enough by Pete ) but also played hardcore hits like Tattoo, Too Much Of Anything etc...and agreed Rabbits synth solo was a tad over the top but John's bass on this was, well, as usual, the BEST! That was until I saw the Quad bass solo live during 5:15 on the Quad Tour...

  • WOAH. I would love to hear Free me from the 89 tour. I take it Daltrey is a beast on it?

  • I never quite understood why this tour was always savaged so badly. I mean, for The Who, it does sound a little too clean, especially with Simon Phillips on drums and the extra guitarist, who can't play at all like Pete, and that cheesy synth solo at the beginning of Sparks. But it's not THAT bad. I mean this is still light years beyond almost anything that's mainstream these days.

  • What do you mean with "savaged so badly"? I don´t know about hown it was recieved? What happend?-To me personally as a big fan of TOMMY (i grew up with this record), of Simon Phillips and Phil Collins (who appeard as Uncle Earnie ;) this was a dream coming true..

  • Well, I've read reviews of the tour and the live album that came after it, and it seemed that alot of people just didn't like it. Me, I'm slightly indifferent, as you can tell by my last post.

  • John Entwistle freaking amazing player.

  • I need this video ... can you make me a copy? I will gladly pay you for it ... Thx again ..Saratoga Springs here ..

  • F'ing awesome !! I had such a great time at this show. I heard they had been walking about town as well ... will never forget that night .. Thx

  • OMG!!!!!!

  • Keith Moon was the best drummer ever for the who.RIP Keith!!

  • I was at this concert - my first real date with my now wife. To think The Who would play a town as small as my hometown (population 13,000) is just amazing. To see Tommy performed, and then more Who hits was awesome. Less than a mile from my house - I could have walked to the concert.

  • Yeah they were hanging out here in town (I live here, too) for a few weeks while they rehearsed for the tour. There's some videos of the rehearsals on here too.

  • @DiamondRabbit

did u nail her on that first date? least she could have done with the cost of tickets, dinner etc...wear and tear on your car..

ps- i took my ex-wife when i was dating her to that tour....greatest show i ever saw or heard....

...i went on to make millions and have great success..when i screwed up a bit..she dumped me...left me virtually homesless and i let her get away with it for the kids sakes...i can always make more bread...

  • I saw this tour and it was amazing. Simon brought the conviction to the table and turned the Who into something they've never been (IMO) THE best rock concert to date. No question! The power felt by the abilities of everyone on that stage brought the "musicians shiver" down my spine. No joke! If you've ever felt that, then I'm sure your LOL!!

  • @ghpbmx Simon Phillips Yep! AWESOME!

  • Amazing show! I was there. Thanks so much for somehow finding this video and posting it!

  • Thanks for posting this !!!!!

  • Debate about drummers aside, listen to (and watch) that work by the Ox...

  • Check my video called "Classic Rock Riffs on my Autographed Acoustic" - I put an interview with Entwistle in there.

  • I was there! Great show!

  • Thank you. A fan for 39 years and never saw the Who play Tommy straight up

  • Aww, it didn't get through all of Sparks... fantastic video, anyway.

  • Why didn't you put the drum solo that was just about to happen in that tune??????????? why does it cut out there?????

  • That's all I have. The tape I have ends right there. I think that is all that was broadcast - it was for the BBC and they aired it locally, too.

  • Simon Phillips is the perfect drummer for the Who. I love Zak, but I wish Simon was given a chance to play with THE WHO, not the giant band of 1989.

  • None of the later drummers were as EXPLOSIVE as Moonie, but Starkey, Jones, and Phillips are/were all very good. In the last tour Starkey didn't let loose nearly enough, IMNSHO. "Competent, but unisnpired," as my date aptly put it. Jones and (especially) Phillips let their hair down a bit more. Phillips was obviously enjoying the hell out of this! Great clip!

  • Amazing how this and the other clip I've put up have turned into a discussion on the drummers! I met Zak, John Enwistle, and Pete's brother Simon backstage on the Daltrey sings Townshend tour. I gave either Zak or Simon a bottle of Goldschlager.

  • Its pretty hard core how Daltry broke a skin on his tamborine. I like Simon Phillips better then Kenny Jones because Phillips plays more 'moonish', as in he just brings more energy then Jones...but Zakk is best replacement in my opnion.

  • Great one....the wHo deserve kudos...Daltry & Townsend set many standards they never got credit for,..for you teens to those early 40s-if you've bot seen it, rent the movie Tommy...amazing!

  • Simon philipps >>>> Zak

  • Literally an amazing journey, thanks for posting these clips!

  • I agree with stewart. Everyone raves about Zak. He is great. So is Kenny. But this guy is amazing.

  • I went to this show when it hit Giants Stadium 1989...there I was in the fourth row...absolutely incredible...the sheer power of the performance...Simon Phillips was the best drummer since Moonie.

  • Zak Starkey's pretty good, too. I saw this tour in 1989, from the last row of CNE stadium in Toronto. Wish I could have seen the Glens Falls show - I live 5 minutes away from this place now.

  • I went to all 4 shows at Giants Stadium. it's a good thing the altered the sets a bit!

  • @StewartSummers Agreed!
