Her outsize nose acts as a megaphone in unexpected wrong places in songs. This is ok but Nicole is so much better and that young kid Griffith Frank sings this better than anyone I've heard.
million billion gzillion times better than nicole kidman.i thought she ruined the song and her voice remained completely expressionless throughout....but barbra streisand is in a league of her own...i love her <3
Barbara Streisand sings with such emotion and clarity. Thank you for being a true artist. Technique is one thing, mastering it with emotion is another playing field. Barbara Streisand has both.
I'm not a HUGE Barba fan, but I really like the way she sings this song. She puts so much emotion into it and makes you feel the way the narrator of the song feels.
I am still wondering why she did not record this song ages ago. When I first heard this great song in NINE in 1982, it had Barbra's name all over it. The lyrics are some of the most romantic written in decades.
@missuser2490 Sure. This is the sort of song that modulates all over the place - Barb sings this in a lower key than it was written. Her first note sounds like F natural, making her opening / home key Bb minor (the mezzo/Belter key). The original was written for a younger soprano voiced, in C# minor, where the vocalist's first note is G#. Both beautiful though I think. PErhaps the sheet music is also available in this lower key, unsure.
This song means so very much to me. I owe you so much Barbrabliss for sharing this with me (us). The simplicity of Streisand's rendition makes the words and the music speak for themselves. That is the hallmark of a an excellent singer. Thank again and again.
SOME THINGS ARE NOT SHARED BECAUSE THERE SO SACRED TO INDIVIDUALS. I CAN RELATE TO THIS SONG AS HOW MUCH I DEARLY LOVE SOMEONE THEY TOUCH A DEEPER PART OF MY SOUL SO PROFOUND THAT YOU FEEL THE PRESENSE OF GOD IN THESE MOMENTS. LIKE YOU DONT KNOW HOW TO RESOLVE THESE FEELINGS AS THEY CAN NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. I THINK THATS WHY BARBRA DOESENT ELABORATE. I TO AM FEELING THIS FOR SOMEONE PRESENTLY. A LOVE SO PROFOUND IT BAFFLES ME. IMISS THEM AND I THINK THEY ARE FEELING THIS TO.
Absolutely magnificent...Barbra is beyond words and this performance is proof positive. I hope and pray that ONE DAY I will allow myself to be vulnerable enough to speak these words to someone...the lyrics take my breath away.
like Streisand in Rain on my parade.. Prefer Kidman's version of this.. Both have alto tenor sort of voices but Kidman takes the cake:)... Streisand is on first record list though.. since Kidman is only in the movies..
I really like this performance. I like how she uses her cabaret roots. BTW, does anyone know if she performed or recorded Sondeim's "Loving You" from "Passion"?
though the play is from 1982, this wonderful bitch found out that there was coming the preproduction of Nine and she did what she always do, like with Sunset Boulevard:" I sing it... and then, u try to do it better!" LOVE U BABS
I don't believe what I am gonna write here right now... but... This performance is bad for me! And it loses this special mood... I can't believe myself (again) that I am writing this, but Nicole Kidman has sung it so much better than a woman who has one of the best voices in the whole world... o.o what's wrong Barbra?...

Did you loose your mind??? Nicole doesn´t take out of the music and lyrics half what streisand does...no feeling at all, and an awful low key tone....because of her bad voice
@Alfie17 I don't like Nicole Kidman and believe me, I'm really suprised, but the low key was not a bad idea... I think it sounds even better. Just my opinion :)
oh, come one, the low key kills the climax of the song "you are the reason why....." We can not expect every singer to sound like Streisand but I had high hopes with this song because I love it a lot and I found it meaningless in the movie, the frustration and dispair are not there...and that is the spirit of the song, is not a love song...
@Alfie17 I'm sorry, you won't convince me. I love Barbra Streisand and I think she's an amazing artist, but this performance is not good for me. And a movie version is lower what I really like. That's why I'd rather movie version.
are you guys talking about nicole and streisands? vs. Eder's? Well if streisand was just 10 years younger (50 something) she still sings better and interprets better than Eder. But vocal recordings reveal Eder as being more full. A great voice but lacks the factors that makes Streisand the best. However, technical vocally speaking, this live performance shows a tired voice. Feelings are still there :). And yeah i like it slowed down like this vs. Eders.
@Alfie17 that's not fair... nicole's voice range and tone is excellent (no one compares to barbra, of course)... i think that low key is great, subdued as it is.

Barbra is so overrated. I mean she seldom does any films, she's only done a dozen in the course of almost forty years. It's annoying. She can sing well but she is just so damn overrated and so picky. She isn't that good, I mean she directs but she has just done so little to show for it.
OMG! 59 recording studio albums, 9 Grammys, and an Academy Award for best composer is nothing for a musician I see!!! (If u wanna talk about the actress, that's another point... but she took the role and she won another Oscar!)
@RajaMCool And it's better to do every piece of crap that comes along? Overrated? I guess the rest of the universe has been wrong for the past 50+ years. I guess all of the honors including the Cecil B. DeMille, Oscars, Emmys, truckload of Grammys, The Kennedy Center Honors and tons of others are not enough validation for a 9 year old like yourself. You obviously know little of the woman's priorities and other interests.
Just incredible! I don't what it is...the sound of that voice, her tonalities, the heart she puts, her inteligence, the actress that she is, her soul,...I really don't know. But, it is like a drug! Sometimes I repeat over and over and over and over a single note just searching where the hell it came from...so sublime, so unique, so private...I don't even think you can find such a sound in the outer space but definitely not on earth!
It is the same for me...and most of her best performances are not hits...songs like Moonfall, Just Because, Places that belong to you...are priceless...
i don't know if you people have heard other renditions of this...but barbra sounds far from amazing, nor in comparison to her own large catalog of recordings and live performances.

Being a fan since my senior year in high school ('83/84), she always seems to awestruck me with her voice. This performance, Barbra and the lyrics, moves me to tears
You can tell that the voice has raspy edges now, and shows the wear and strain of time, but what a magnificent performer, and what incredible control, still. The ultimate singing actress, Streisand brings amazing depth, passion, understanding and delicacy to this song.
Just dawned on me....Jennifer Aniston must be related...though not much of a singer. Barbara, like buttah..

someone once told me that a great song gets reduced to nothing in the hands of an immensely talented but unskilled singer/musician.
i see a lot of singers nowadays who just belt and scream their lungs out and their loyal fans proclaim these as the best singers in the world.
these video is proof that a simple song, in the hands of a true disciple of her art, can weave magic with her voice.

The ultimate singing actress, Streisand brings amazing depth, passion, understanding and delicacy to this song.

...and that raspy voice is so much more mellow, rich and deep. I love it :-)
