  • I used to adore Torchy as a child, I used to have an old Torchy annual. I had no idea he'd been on TV, he was way before my time (I was born in 1975)

  • no wonder we are all nuts how scary was this dude lol

I feel sure Children would love to see it again.

    I am now 61

  • Hey Torchy! It is called "BLINKING". You may want to try it before your corneas dry to the back of your brain.

  • It was kinda like an early Terminator?

  • Umm..Torchy You Do Not Put On Eye-Liner Like That [=

  • Torchy look's high on crack, you can call me crack head,

  • This gave me nightmares shudder

  • "Mr bumblebrops started to make his toy boy" You couldn't make this up. This is just scary.

  • thanks for posting this. When he grew up Torchy took the moniker of Mr. Sin, aka the Peking Homunculus, you can see him in the Doctor Who documentary 'The Talons of Weng-Chiang'. He was a guy nobody messed with, but he was good to his friends.

  • Scary!!

  • omg

  • "build me a rocket ship!". That creepy little shit ain't half demanding!

  • at last my dad thought he was the only one that knew this kiddie programme.

  • Isnt the old man a little bit.....pedofilish :S

  • @Tokiohotelgirl97 He seems now like a prototype for Herbert the Pervert in Family Guy, who was always after Chris!

  • This is so scary!!! im gon a have nightmares now!!!

but then again.....scooby doo used to scare me :L

  • It was not suppossed to be called Torchy the battery boy it was suppossed to be called Torchy the batty boy.

  • hello dear old bumble wuble drop! im so glad you made me, NOW I WILL TAKE OVER THE WORLD. god that kid is scary :\

  • This is sinister

  • @trossachs2003

Sinister?? this was kids TV in the early 60s when kids were not afraid unlike all the scared brats now.

  • @twoslices Kids these days are wimps and spoilt brats. They're now scared of things like Thomas the Tank Engine (the old episodes) because of all the crashes and stuff which is totally retarded. I mean I watched that in the 60's and no one was afraid of it. It was much more entertaining than the Thomas out now which is horrible. Everything has to be dumbed down these days. -_-

  • @boffinme80

    thanks for that :/

  • @annie10103 Hey! I'm talking to you!!

  • Torchy's eyes were somewhat too starey for me to watch this programme from anywhere except from behind the sofa.

At 2:32 it all seems to go a bit 'Sound of Music'. Kept expecting a Julie Andrews nun puppet to drop by.

Didn't take Mr. Bumbledrop long to design, source the materials and construct the rocket!

  • This British stuff is creepy.

  • @markthemiles Its not so scary any more :)

it was in 1950 though :D

  • i wont sleep tonight

  • thats some scray shit

  • And you had better be nice to Torchy, or he will kill you!!

    LOL

    He is kinda' creepy.

  • WOW the realism of this is so impossible

  • How did the glasses get on the clock pendulum! Thats crazy.

  • good grief, this is spooky, I vaguely remember this, but dont recall how weird it was!!

  • Thank you so much for posting these two videos. Brought back so many happy memories of my childhood and I'm now 56.

  • ooooh, scary! I don't quite know if splendiferous is the word I'd use. Nightmare maybe, I think this is where the irrational childhood fear of dolls in the dark came from. I would be scared of the dark too if this toy was in my bedroom at night!

  • A great improvement seems to have been made with the animation puppetry since Anderson's 1957's Twizzle. The sparks from the rocket seemed in slow motion to me so I suspect the film was slowed down to make the puppets appear smoother, less jerky and more realistic than they were in Twizzle. The Amazing Gerry Anderson! Thanks auspete...memories locked away..... now released! Gasp!

  • happy memories of sunday afternoons a long time ago

  • HOW SLENDIFOROUS~

  • Torchy is nice but CREEPY.

  • @SuperDooperVideoBoy

I so agree I remember it being very different I think this would be a pG today its almost supernatural

  • @SuperDooperVideoBoy Not only that, he can fire GAMMA RAYS out of his head. Be scared.

  • CRIEKEE!! Ows dat fer a shockin bad at?

SHYTE!! The little slave an masters got devil eyes.

  • the eyes freak me out! always have! always will!

  • 0:33-0:42 IT'S ALIVE!!!!!

  • I'm from Germany, and here, there is a group of Pupeteers Called "Augburger Puppenkiste" that made much Series that looked like this. But they made it like this even in the 90's. But Gerry and Sylvia evolved it and then some years later the Puppets had not seeable strings and moving mouth. The Technology behind it is amazing.

  • HOLY FUCK THAT FINGS EVIL

  • hahaha because everyone leaves there glasses on the grandfather clock and all... lol

  • They made some right old crap in the 60s!

  • Unitentionally hilarious. LOL

  • The bumbledrop prof is who mummy and daddy told you to steer clear of hes bent

  • Wow! The special effects make the likes of Star Wars look.......well, really good.

  • crikey - after all these years I find myselfstill frightened!

  • bloody hell he doesnt joke with the whole designing crap.... one day a living toy... 2nd day a rocket ship and what on day three :P??? a planet?

  • looks like old bumbledrop gave old torchy a length, the way he walk up that plank into the rocket.

  • @pimple22 ah, well. that was in the days before outsourcing and layers of beaurocracy bogged down the wheels of industry. today, hed have to have a commission from the european parliament approve each phase and get the funding by...cutting childrens progarmming......

  • Torchy You ugly little bastard

  • @blissy1 How dare you sir!

  • I remember this very well, but its been edited. The original showed Prof Bumbledrop inserting U2 batteries in a very inappropriate place, he was arrested shortly after for assult and battery... Haaaa!

  • I guess you coud say he got 'piles'.

  • Yeah no doubt, thats one gay puppet !

  • It's more scary than the exorcist!

  • Torchy, Torchy The Batery Boy

    He's a walky, talky Toy.

    I must be old!

  • I preferred Rag, Tag and Bobtail. But, later came Supercar and Fireball XL5 - BRILLIANT!

  • he looks gay......is he?...I saw the old man touching his crutch area..... LOL

  • you are one creepy person, you really should be listed as someone to keep their eye on, you have been reported, not here but elsewhere

  • torchy makes me hard..LOL

  • He sounds very well spoken does Torchy. Like he's got a plum in his mouth.

  • WOW is this a LOST art form!

  • auspete...Well done mate, some truly brilliant and nostalgic stuff here...priceless!

  • This is (just) before my time. I don't think I ever saw this but then I would have said I'd never watched Four Feather Falls until I saw it and the bells started loudly clanging.

No bells so far with this. When was its last transmission?

How old was Kenneth Connor when he voiced this? He genuinely manages to sound elderly.

Thanks, auspete, for the sight of this and everyone else for the further info. Hearing about pussy cat willum also rang a bell so I'm going to investigate that next!

  • Is it just me or is Torchy incredibly creepy?

    Those eyes are weird!

  • No, LtColKroenen, it is not just you. I watched this first time round quite happily as a child, but now I see Torchy was actually sinister looking...very creepy as you say! I admire the BBC accents..no regional accents allowed in thise days.

  • I want to be 5 years old again, and enjoy great programs like this!

Didn't realise it was prodced by Gerry Andserson.

  • He's sososo scary when he comes to life!

  • a remba warching this then a was lil lol

  • does anyone remember seeing Porus the Woodcutter? it seems to be a forgotten series

  • Do you mean Paulus the Wood Gnome - or something like that?

  • I wasn't really going to see the rest of this video, but for some strange reason I was hooked on it.

I have never seen this children's programme before.Way before my time!!

  • Torcheeeee!! With weird blue eyes and golden hair.

I guess we got to imagine he has then.

Too bad it's in black and white!!

    Olwyn Griffiths did Torchy's voice.

  • Torcheeeee!!! With weird bright blue eyes and golden hair! Too bad it's in black and white....

I guess we got to imagine this instead!

    Olwyn Griffiths played Torchy's voice.

  • I recall going to see santa in a department store and to keep u amued whilst tanding in line the animated displays were of Torchy,

  • This first episode was broadcast on my Birthday - 25th Feb - in the Granada area - which N- Lincs was then. I estimate would have been my 8th or 9th b'day which makes it 1960 or 61? The other kids at school were so excited by the advance publicity, they would only come to my party if I promised to watch four Feather Falls - but my brother and I were just as keen to see it.

  • Yes - the first series was broadcast between Feb - Apr 1960, and a second, shorter series around Feb 1961.

  • My god it's Eddie Izzard.

Got to start somewhere I suppose.

  • I've gone right back to my childhood watching this, I loved Torcgy & Twizzle. My younger sister was a big fan of Sarah Bown & Hoppity. She was more like Hoppity than Sarah tho'. pollysgang.

  • Ditto all the other 50 year olds comments. You Tube is soo Coool!

  • Most people my age think I'm imagining things when I mention this show. Now I have proof. Thank you - I think this was the first tv programme I ever saw and on a screen about the same size!!!

  • my god i am 50,and i just came across this on you tube,i remember watching this when i was about 4 years old.....i thought i was making it all up! strange thing,i used to call my penis "torchy" when i was a kid!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

  • but do you remember four feather falls

  • @preddo53 you know, for a long time i wasn't sure whether four feathers was real, or if i'd imagined it, i no longer live in the uk, so i couldnt ask anyone if theyd seen it...strange to think..we actually had a telly pretty early on. unusual for those day. i think it was a murphy. not sure.

  • @aardvarkmcgillicuddy you can get all the old kids tv shows on play.com. theres loads, even the yank crap, Mr Edd and co. a fucking talking horse. and they slag our programming, wankers.

  • thankyou - people thought i dreamt this show up -

  • I remember this, it looks so crude now and innocent.

  • i loved it when i was a kid never thought i would see it again thank you

  • It's SaTaN!

    RUN!

  • oh my gosh, I remember watching this as a kid, Now I am feeling old :-( lol.

  • So do I but I have a smile on my face just watching this brilliant.

  • Will it fined the Blue Fairy to become a real boy

  • NASA should sign this old fellow up,builds a rocket over night!

  • Isnt it great to see puppets on strings for a change instead of stop-animation and one dimensional cartoons. Classic!

  • He probably put them there when he was working on the clock or fiddling with the pendulum. Give him a break, he's an absent-minded professor!

  • Why the hell did the old man put his glasses on the pendulum in the clock?

  • This second part takes a while to load, but it's so worth the wait...... marvellous!

  • GAHHH!!!!!

    That older guy is creepy!!!

  • toy boy ha ha

  • i wanna cry, it takes me soooo far back, to my childhood and when my mum was alive, iloved this prog.

  • But, oh dear....that mad ol' Torchy was too bizarre for me at age 8. Those crazed eyes, that Von Trapp jacket. However, that there 'Twinkly Star' is something we genuinely all need today, especially as we grow older .... and loose things.

  • The immaculate 'Torchy' set and its introductory puppets from the first show, posessed brilliant characterisation and exquisite set-lighting. Pom-Pom the dog was a triumph - a poodle with straight hair?!? That HAD to have come from a bad-hair-day-trichology-diary of the originator/narrator (mixed with more than a little of mother's ruin)....

    continued...

  • Part 1 plays okay, but this second part seems to have a fault and doesn't play.

  • Ok, that just scared the hell out of me.

  • Its supposed to!

  • Oh good, I was starting to think I was the only one feelin' that.

  • That was so sweet. Takes me back to when I was a kid. I'm sure I watched this when I was littl
