I'll bet Randy hadn't yet signed with WCW yet when this aired...so part of the reason for Vince putting him over so hard was perhaps he thought it might re-open Savage signing with the WWF. Just a thought.
I believe the other rumor. It's more logical, when Savage left for WCW he took the Slim-Jim advertisement with him, and as you know the WWF was in a bit of a struggle during that time period, so naturally that effected Vince majorly. According to Bret, he found Vince in his office on the floor, crying, begging Savage to come back over the phone. So really, if Savage really did "beef' Stephanie I doubt Vince would be begging him to come back. Until Vince or Savage speaks up we may never know.
Was really hoping for a "I wish you the best in all your future endeavors" Also that glare from Vince's eyes at the end there tells a different story. I mean....
this is before Randy signed for WCW. McMahon and Savage had a special friendship and when he never agreed a contract with the WWF, Vince uncharacteristically gave him a thank you on air for all his contributions. Savage signed for WCW and it hurt Vince. that's why he isn't in the good books now. Nothing to do with the bullshit rumour that he slept with Stephanie. McMahon and Savage were tight and McMahon felt like Savage betrayed him.
That makes sense. I guess I'd feel the same way too if someone backstabbed me like that and left me high and dry right there. Kinda bizzare how McMahon still holds that grudge even to this day.
That's all fine and good to work somewhere else but you'd at least give your two weeks notice or something and not just up and leave out of the blue which is what Randy did.
With the others you mentioned, I'm sure they were either let go or chose to leave on there at the time.
For starters why does McMahon have all this hatred for Savage for all these years, which includes him personally removing his character from the Legends of Wrestling video game. Seeing how stubborn Vince is, it wouldn't shock me if he holds a grudge for years.
Second, When Lawler got his start he said that Randy Savage just up and left and Vince asked him prior to one of the shows to fill in for him. He's been on RAW ever since.
Watch the footage. Vince McMahon's just said they couldnt come to terms on a contract. He signed for WCW while this was going on. Which meant WWF not only lost there main colour commentator, one of there star wrestlers, they also lost a shitload of money on Savage's Slim Jim sponsership deal. McMahon must have wanted to kill him.
@ianhitman You are 100 percent right. You needn't look any further than the slew of guys who left between 1992-1994. How many of them got on-air send-offs? ZERO.

I don't believe the sleeping with Stephanie rumor one bit. He just up and left for WCW for more money.

Backstabbed? ...He chose to work somewhere else for more money. That isn't backstabbing. What about Hall, Nash and Hogan? He doesn't hate them still.

You can tell Vince was upset, but was trying to be professional at the same time.
