Today it is the repair facility for Amtrak (National Railroad Passenger Corporation) and the size is down to about 100 acres.
In celebration of the City of Beech Grove’s 100th anniversary, Amtrak opened their repair facility for public tours on 11/11/06. The place was originally built in 1906/07 and was the New York Central Engine Repair facility.
NYC paid $5 Million for 640 acres of land about 6 miles SE of downtown Indianapolis, IN. They say there was a large stand of trees nearby and hence the name, Beech Grove.
Amtrak was pleased with the quality of the work and the central location of Beech Grove. After much negotiation, Amtrak acquired 62 1/2 acres of the shop for approximately $3,500,000. The Beech Grove Shops officially became part of Amtrak on April 1, 1975.
As for that Ge Switcher in the video? IF you search on "Amtrak Shop Switcher 1100." That reference to AMTK 7 may not be as accurate.AMTK 7, AMTK 11 and this 1100 are all GE switchers.
In 1971, Amtrak came into existence and took over the passenger rail service for all other railroads with the exception of the Southern Railroad and the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad. An ambitious program was undertaken to repair the old and uncared for passenger cars and bring them into a usable state of repair. In 1973, Amtrak contracted with the Penn Central Railroad to have its passenger cars repaired and refurbished here at Beech Grove.
These two merged to form the Penn Central Railroad which took over operations here at Beech Grove. But even this merger was plagued with financial difficulties and many years of deferred maintenance existed. The facility came to a state of general disrepair.
During the war years there were more than 5,000 employees. This was certainly the peak of activity here at Beech Grove. After World War II, trains met with a fierce new competitor known as the airplane. Passenger train travel began a gradual decline, and with that decline, there was a decrease in the operations here at the Beech Grove Shops. Financial difficulties arose within the New York Central Railroad as well as the Pennsylvania Railroad.
The Beech Grove Shops were built in 1905 by the Big Four Railroad, more appropriately called the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad. It was designed to maintain steam locomotives, passenger cars and freight cars. In 1922 the parent company, New York Central, absorbed the Big Four Railroad and took control of the shop. New York Central continued to make improvements and expanded the shop operations.

That's the worst concentration camp I've ever seen. The fences were only slightly higher than than the chairs sitting by them. You're fucking retarded. Me and some friends got into that facility a few months ago to just mess around. Got into the buildings and there is nothing in there but tools and spare train parts. The only "suspicious" thing that was in there was old empty spray paint cans. Probably from people throwing art on the trains. Nice try on the video though. Not to say that these places don't exist at all, but I live here in Beech Grove and this is WAY blown out of proportion. Half of the fencing in falling down around the facility, there are holes in the fencing. And of coarse there are winds socks and security cameras, there are helicopters that fly very close to the area with a landing spot at the police department and the hospital also near by.
If you know the city at all, you know that this is very close to some crime ridden neighborhoods. When this place was in its prime, this security was necessary to secure the expensive equipment and dangerous chemicals. LOOK at that sign at 3:48 carefully. When have you ever seen a government sign attached with tieties? When have you ever seen one with no other printing on it. That's the worst concentration camp I've ever seen. The fences were only slightly higher than than the chairs sitting by them. And I don't know what this lady thinks you can watch from a tower that looks to be around four stories high, other than birds. But you certainly don't put guards multiple stories in the air where they need a sniper rifle scope just to see the ground, with no awning, or guard rails. The only "suspicious" thing that was in there was old empty spray paint cans. Probably from people throwing art on the trains. Nice try on the video though. Not to say that these places don't exist at all, but I live here in Beech Grove and this is WAY blown out of proportion. Half of the fencing in falling down around the facility, there are holes in the fencing. And of coarse there are winds socks and security cameras, there are helicopters that fly very close to the area with a landing spot at the police department and the hospital also near by.

Now anothyer question? In the first few seconds of the video it shows something thru a fence? Does anyone recognize it? I do since I am a pilot. It's an omi directional radio transmitter. Used at airports from instrument navigation. There is NO SUCH antennae located at Beech Grove as it would interfer with the regional airport navigation equipment for Indianapolis. And every one located in the county is listed on the airmaps for that area. NON Such is listed for Beech Grove.
