she still has a bit of her old til tuesday persona, but the last tt record kind of fed into this. Jon Brion was the perfect to launch her into solo mode.
You are so right, bb420. How Aimee Mann keeps going in a music industry that promotes only the most flashy, soulless, and craptacular artists, I don't know. But I'm glad she does. In the non-stop sh*t-parade of modern pop music, she helps to remind me that mankind really IS capable of producing something complex, enduring, and beautiful.
She has the ability to write really melodic sad music. The song builts up until she says "hello, is anybody home" and you get that huge surge of release in that solo. Quite intense.
she was and still is one of the most consistantly intelegent songwriters in the business... really, i could listen to her sing the phone directory, such a great voice...thanks for this post...
This is an awesome video! Thanks mannfan! I have always especially loved the "dot dot dot" instead of plain old bop bop or something she sang the punctuation! LOL
I dunno...I love them both, but it's Bachelor and Lost in Space I've found myself coming back to the most after all these years - near-perfect stuff imo. (Not moved so much by her last two albums.)
That's really respectful of you. I'm glad you think about her looks before noticing the millions of records she has sold and the brilliant lyrics she has written.
I luckily stumbled across Whatever the year it was released and have been a diehard Aimee Mann fan ever since. i agree with many others here - one of the best debut albums by any artist. so many great songs to choose from. i always liked "Fourth of July". and kudos to jon brion, too. a brilliant player and arranger.
This, along with "More Than A Feeling" by Boston, may be the 1 of the 2 greatest debut singles in pop music history - if only she had sold like Scholz, Delp (RIP) Goudreau & Hashian .....Jon Brion's lead guitar is as searing as any I've ever heard in my life.
I agree with Bosma64, why the hell hasn't she had the support she so obviously deserves. The music industry continues to pump out unmitigated shite while genuine talent is passed over time and again.
Rant over...thanks for posting all of these great videos
this AWESOME CD came out in 1992/93...her first solo LP. She's had such a hard time with record companies, etc over the years, she eventually started her own label. LOVE HER!
When the hell is the music industry going to stop promoting mindless fembot music like Jessica Simpson and throw a bone to real (incredible) talent like Aimee??!!
We're talking 10 years ago if not a little more. I think she had alot of fun doing this. Aimee is now 46 I believe and still keeps pumping out great lyrics and music. I've been a big fan always. Yeah I know..get a life.
Great Song!!!...

My ex-wife used this song to beat me. It's taken me 15 years to appreciate it. She was right - but not in that she meant!

Yeah olytanis and the fact that she sang through a dixie cup in the last few measures of the song! Who would have thought of doing that?
Albertan1956 2 years ago
Bought this in '93. Classic all the way.

is it just me, or does aimee mann in this video look like the psychotic albino monk from the 'da vinci code'?
