Our little Opie started showing the symptoms of DM when he was about 11. We got a cart for him and he took to it very quickly. He'd run so fast chasing squirrels in his cart I couldn't keep up with him!! The cart gave him an extra two years with us. Our vet was very supportive, she said he did not have any pain with the DM. We eventually put him in "Depends" (his body thru both legs of the diaper) and that worked great! RIP, Opie now you can chase all the squirrels you want!
My vet has not suggested a doggy wheelchair but if she does not im changing vets asap. No sense in putting down animals just because it is more work to keep the dog.
@CorgettaAspiring15 I feel for you my cocker is at the vet hospital getting a treatment for his spine. He eats and wags his tail so I would never put him down. I have been doing research on what we can do to improve his quality of life. I just would never put down a dog that still wants to eat. Even tho you did not know about this dont feel guilty. I would change vets if they never suggested a doggy wheelchair. Even tho they only make money putting animals down. My vet has not sug this but if
I THINK IT'S SWEET THAT HE CAN STILL GET AROUND! HAVE ANY OF YOU SEEN BABE: PIG IN THE CITY? THERE'S A DOH NAMED FLEALICK THAT USES A CART JUST LIKE THAT.
omg! my male corgi is 10! all most all the symptoms have already happened. My vet said my dog broke his back in 2 places, he can walk still, he has injured his back left hip somehow. what do I do and where can I get the balancer should I ever need one?
Degenerative myelopathy is common in middle-aged to older corgis. It starts with the toenails scraping on the sidewalk, then loss of balance in one rear leg, then the other, scissoring of the legs, and finally dragging in the rear. There is no cure - but we can give them years of mobility with a properly balanced and fitted cart.
@2007006096 - corgis, being so short, just lie down at will. Larger dogs go for walks in their carts and then are put in their beds. Yes, it's work having a disabled dog, but it's also another beautiful layer of intimacy and connection between you and another species...
I don't know how old he was, but dogs that come to us for wheelchairs may be anywhere from 7 mos - 15 + years old. He was most likely around 10, or so.
what sadistic bastard would dislike this video

This is so depressing and so adorable at the same time. It's cute, but I really hope my corgi never has to have one of these.

We had to put our corgi down due to disk disease. I wish we could've done something like this for her so she could live :'(

It is nice to know that he can still move around! I read about a boy who did this for his rabbit!

Corgis are cute, but I'd be afraid to adopt one because of their genetic issues. Dog breeding has done some horrible things:(
