  • i want that engine in a metro!

  • mazda gtr 1.8 own 210bhp stock mate..much better than rover

  • cant belive i own the first press releace car reg k405 ahp :) its a red one with a load off prolems but dunno if i should fix it just coz its the first one ???

  • I used to have a 220 tomcat turbo coupe great looking car fast in a straight line but imo one of the worst handling evers ever produced had to sell it a month after buying it as otherwise i knew it'll end up being my coffin !! shame as l Iove the look of them :)

  • @Mrpulsargtir the 22 gsi and gti turbo where much better in the corners. my brotrher had a 220 gti turbo and it was amazin in the bends!

  • That is still a quick, and good looking car, even by today's standards.

The only problem with the T series was that it was never as tuneable as other turbo engines due to its cheap, cast pistons. Kept standard though, they are very tough. We had an 820 Vitesse Sport at work which did 140,000 miles with pretty much routine servicing only, and it still went like stink.

  • read what i said properly.... i said prob 1 of the fastest cars for the money... and u say they handle like shit well ye ok ill give ya that 1

  • tiff shoud have never left top gear..

  • Awesome car, plus the purple colour as well !!!

  • It's a pitty that very few British cars have the awe that some Germand and Italian cars have around the world hehe

  • yup

  • Had one of these in the late 90's.... it was the acceleration 100+ that was impressive. A very underated car that nowadays has fallen into the hands of boy racer chavs. Mine never gave me any problems and if i could buy it back today i would.

    L62YNR where are you? :)

  • Did anyone pick on what Tiff said on the Autobahn? It's so true, road conditions are always the overiding factor rather than speed when it comes to collisions. The speed is the contributor not the cause.

There are 70mph A roads where I live that are safe for over 130mph in the right car and with the right driver and at the the right time, the exact same stretch of road at rush hour in the wet in a Vauxhall Corsa at 70mph tailgaiting is the cause for nearly all the collisions on that road.

  • The Rover in this video is still on the roads today: The vehicle details for K408 AHP are: Date of Liability 01 11 2009 Date of First Registration 28 08 1992 Year of Manufacture 1992 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1994CC CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type Petrol Export Marker Not Applicable Vehicle Status Licence Not Due Vehicle Colour BLUE Vehicle Type Approval null The information contained on this page is correct at the time of enquiry.
  • did you use that new service to check a car reg on a mobile?

  • No, just used the DVLA website.

  • i just checked it on the insurance database and it is still insured aswell!

  • This is fifth gear not top gear.

  • no this is top gear when tiff and jeremy did it!

  • i dont know how many times this has been mentioned but this is TOP GEAR you imbecile.

  • I don't know how many times you sounded out the words in the message above your's, but its already made clear.

    Thanks for looking more retarded.

  • am i right in saying that these cars are called the "tomcat"

  • yes

  • i seen one of these for £500 to bad am 18 years old

  • I just bought Rover 220 turbo... its nice car but to be honest Im going back to my old Calibra Turbo... ;)

  • matV6cali, i feel a bit sorry for you mate!! Its hard for poor people to buy a car. cant you get a refund on the rover?

  • i dont care what any1 says amd im sure alot of people will agree that for the money the rover coupe turbo has got to be 1 of the best cars on the used car market. there s nothing that i know of that can beat the rover turbo in a straight line for the same money and power. credit to rover for producing such a great car.

  • agreed

  • @gelly1985 Alfa Romeo V6. about £500-600

Full Mono leathers. PAS,ABS ect ect

  • @antonyr123 a v6 lol. no chance. a 220 turbo would demolish it

  • @TheLance66

2.0 turbo vs a 250bhp Quad cam, 2 headed alfa romeo V6 with top end of 155mph.

    i dont think so mate. i own a 213 with a 210bhp 1.8 turbo MG engine.

  • Comment removed

  • @gelly1985 200 bhp from a 2.0 16v turbo is fucking awful, they handle like shit and fall apart. Quality car lol

  • its not fifth gear, tiff is in 5th gear now but a decade or so ago tiff and jeremey were in both in top gear. this is top gear.

  • I love Rovers!

  • 18,400 my god! u can get these for like £100 now! u sure its not 5th gear?

  • £100? i dont think so unless its in 10,000,000 pieces or made entirely of rust. try £1000-2000

  • errrrrr no ya cant.... dont talk shit.

  • I don't think Channel 5 existed when this was filmed!!

  • For all those wondering if this is fifth gear, the guy's name is Tiff Needell. He used to do top gear, but now does fifth gear. His other career was motor racing.

  • im a better driver than tiff,he should have L plates!8-)

  • Post a video of your Racing trophies and I will believe you.

  • i was kidding you you humourless twat!

  • lol. fuk ur reply made me laugh.

  • thats fifh gear

  • well said.

  • no, its the original top gear from the 90's

  • rovers are bad tho they went bust repeatidly lol and oh yh alloy blocks well dun numptys head gaskets are killers on these cars

  • I have a rover 214 SEi as my first car being 17, just thought i'd say " its all about the walnut" the plastic walnut is legendary :P

  • it's real walnut actually

  • Yours might be, the stuff on my 25 aint... :D

  • on the dash around the heater knobs is plastic on the 25 and 45, due to MGRs cost cutting in the later years. The original R8 and later model is was real walnut

  • Nice, looks like I missed out... :/

  • The K-Series engine is the most modern engine britian has produced even to this day

  • and the most troublesome...

  • Lol, notice how you'd never get an explanation for 'driving too fast' these days!

Nice car though, I wouldn't mind one myself.

  • great car i own one! very very fast and cheap as chips and look and sound better than alot of newer cars or equivalant powered cars in my opinion!

  • Βeautifull car!!

  • 18,000 pounds is $36,000 in todays money! And this is the late 80's early 90's! No wonder Rover croaked.

  • Please consider that a Focus costs over $23,000 in today's money.

  • A Focus with comparable power cost closer to $40,000 today! They're about £19,000 with the leather and stuff...

  • You've got to remember that the new car market had a serious correction in the late 90s, before that all cars were very overpriced. Yes Rover's were a little more than Ford and Vauxhalls etc. but Rovers were a higher quality product. And before you argue, the 1992 Escort was under engineered and badly built and the Astra's power outputs and styling were flaccid.

  • i wouldnt have said they were a higher quality product, they had more class but the quality was average

  • morgrp, you're talking bollocks.

The K design is totally different to the T, K is a modular build, T is conventional build. T for turbo? are you stupid?

The T series is a decent, strong motor. Headgasket failure ISN'T common with these engines, however, some earlier units were known to weep a little oil at the front of the block, this isn't a big thing however as the amount lost is negligible, and is not a sign of HGF.

Get your facts straight before you post complete tripe.

  • Calibra is better , 220 is nice tho

  • I own a rover 216 coupe that has the k series engine and I really cannot fault the engine at all. Its quiet when cruising, sounds amazing when pushed, economical and if maintained properly it will continue to do its job!!

  • This car looks soo damned good and shifts like shit off a shovel! Why do half the people on here insist on bitching about rover and running them down!! Rover interiors are alot better than the likes of say a peugeot interior, rover leather is good and not cheap and nasty like peugeot, yet rovers leather wouldn't quite match a Merc, but then again rovers were priced more affordably than the likes of a merc!!

  • 130 in one of those bits of shit? goodbye head gasket....

  • piss off, go do some research, its waterpumps usually, not the gasket itself.

Lotus elise's use rovers k engine, they never fail the gasket. why? they get the perfect amount of love and care, rovers get forgotten.

  • I'm a mechanic, think I know a bit about Kseries 1.1 and 1.4s are less prone the 1.8 has a poor track record yes it is an inefficient cooling system that need lots of care but neglect results in gaskets going at an alarmingly low mileage. The design of the gasket is totally floored being too thin between the cylinder walls. From a mechanics point of view Rovers are worthless, shit to drive with poor build quality Thats why I love em'! they make me a living!

  • ...so you love to hate them :D

yeah, i understand rovers have flaw's, the original gaskets were too thin! The cooling system (mnius the w/pump) is fine, its the fact they used a low quality cheap to buy waterpump that fails all too easy.

Sorry for telling you to piss off, was in a bad mood yesterday, i spent ages bitching on pootube to calm down somewhat.

  • This is a T series not a K series, shows how much you know!

  • This is a T series not a K series, shows how much you know.

  • Same basic block and head design and therefore has the same problems - T is for turbo

  • Err, no it's not. The T series is nothing to do with the K series, shares no components, uses a totally different block and head. The K series features long head bolts, T series is of a more conventional design. And T isn't for Turbo. The T series was available in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged form.

  • They were both a running development on the basis of the o-series engine.Yes the SOHC Oseries engine is reliable but the t series just isn't, They still do head gaskets, they nearly all piss oil out of the head not to mention the fact that the pistons aren't strong enough to handle more power. Say whta you like but i think its a shitty engine in a lack lustre chassis that simply can't handle the power. If you've gotta have one then get a 216 with the D16Z2 DOHC honda lump

  • k-series has nothing to do with the O-series.

No part bar the MPi alloy Trottle body on late O-series MPi and early MPi K are interchangable. I've got a few examples of both engines :D

  • Eh? Do you know what you are talking about? The K-series was an all new engine. It is of sandwich construct held together with torsion bolts. The K-series was the first production engine of this type to be used on a production car. It had been on motorcycles previously before.

  • The T was based on the O series. This was of conventional build. Power extracted from the T16 have been in excess of 500hp used on RWD applications. It is a suitable alternative to the Escort Cosworth engine and is just as strong when tuned correctly.

  • the bottom end of the T16 is pretty indestructable, install a 4 layer Klinger headgasket and if you keep it cool enough, they are hard to break.

  • I've just bought one of these bad boys, I agree that they feel cheap when sat inside because they share so much in common with the standard old 200's but the handling is amazing. I was genuinely amazed with the standard suspension and steering arrangement, it gives such a sharp and responsive ride.

  • I just can't like this car. All the Rovers I've been in just feel cheap. Especially the 214/25 or whatever it was. Another thing that annoys me is when they put plastic wood trims on the dash etc. It just makes it look cheaper!

  • The wood on the dashboard and door cards on the Mk2 200/400 series is real wood veneer!

  • Really?? That's not like Rover :)

  • Who wants f***ing traction control!

  • neyce konuşuyonuz a.q.

  • I accidently thought that this was fith gear because tiff needle is the co-presenter there right now. I didn't know that he was a presenter on TG before.

and you folks should not make fun of my spelling. I am from sweden and I have never spoken with a real english person in my life. sorry once again. you still suck

  • You "accidentally thought", I love that. You got it wrong, you corrected people who were correct, you abused them and misspelt it. Real English people probably run a mile when they see you coming

  • ya right

  • ok ok sry my mistake i get it

  • does anyone know where can i get the second part of it?

  • I think you'll find that this is Top Gear but the "old version". You're clearlt the moron. The rover coupe ceased production in 1999 way before Fifth Gear was made.

  • I think you'll find it is Top Gear. It will have been the "old" Top Gear. Fifth Gear came out after 2001 long after this Rover ceased production so it must have been the old Top Gear

  • this is fithgear not topgear you morans

    //topgear forever

  • you misspelled "morons"...

    and yes, TopGear IS better.

  • this isn't TopGear it's fifth Gear!!

    morans

  • it's top gear. tiff nidell (i think that's how you spell it)was top gear's main presenter in the mid 90's

  • its top gear you "moron", do a bit of research!!

  • i remeber clarkson did the review

  • My mondeo doesn't even sound that loud while going 130mph. Although it's not like I'm a boy racer but I like to take it on little test runs.
