Dear MMRJL, Okay. I would agree that any kind of art that makes somebody happy has an undisputable value for that person at that moment. But wouldn't you agree that taste in art, music, etc. also develops while you experience more, broaden your scope, get more mature and more conscious? I listened to Miles for 5 decades ( saw him live in the 70s and in the 80s) and my preferences are with the more free and intense times of his music, when he had more strength. But: Enjoy what you want and can!
My favourite Miles show is the Isle of Wight, so I agree very much with your premise.I simply was saying that as an older man, his 80s comeback stuff was right for that time too, though very different. He just kept reinventing the music and himself over the decades and left one of the best legacies in music as I'm sure you'd agree.
yeah sure, I have no problem to agree with that. However my peferences are clear and in my opinion his concerts of the 80s would have been better without certain songs - like a road without holes in it . Yes, Miles did have his moments of excellence even in songs like Time After Time, Human Nature, etc. A master is a master and if a master plays a simple or even stupid song he'll add something to it that gives it at least a little more quality than it had before.
If you want to see a really happy, ecstatic smile from Miles during a show, watch some of his shows in 1973 when he was at the peak of his power, playing free funk, for example in Montreux 1973. This "Time after Time" or "Human Nature" shit is sad because it shows Miles's degeneration. But it's okay if it still makes some people happy. Everybody likes what fits them. Many people also liked Elvis after his time in the Army, when he looked and behaved like he'd been castrated.
@MrHajuebe Harsh. Miles played these later songs beautifully and touchingly. It's some of his best work. People were happy to pay to see MD superstar; they didn't dictate his choice of music, he did. He has never seemed that happy performing in the 'early day' (famous for this) and after the early Montreux shows he became a recluse in NY until 1978. He looks happy very much in the 80s' Montreaux shows. You shouldn't pontificate, mate

Awesome!! Thx a mill. Somebody knows what happened to Joe McCreary? And to see Miles smile by the end - he was obviously content himself...
