i love this, but my damn fingers would be too big for it! :( i'm wondering how this guy is playing it so easy! i just got a Palm phone and it's frustrating as hell trying to text on it because my fingers are so big!
i maybe heard this song over 40 years ago. i never 4got it. the mellotron was banned by union musicians but john lennon used it to open strawberry fields (1967). it was under rated since then- except for true visionaries. the song was cursed as to be about satan because it was too good.
That's a very accurate sample set, you can hear on the cello sample that the bottom 5 notes are actually a sampled double bass, just as on the original mellotron, as they couldn't persuade the cello player to tune down for the session!
@SheriffCarruthers If you're a kid and you know King Crimson then you should already be happy with the fact that you're lightyears ahead of your peers.
@ybrik222 how though? I didn't find this song until I was about 22 and only because I was really into ELP and wanted to trace back the roots of the group. You never hear it on classic rock FM radio or TV, which is what fed me most of my classic rock in my teens..
Well, there are many more alternatives to radio for finding music nowadays, like the internet. Pink Floyd is probably one of the most popular "older" bands at my school (despite the students' terrible taste in modern music), which leads me to believe that some of them would be knowledgeable of other prog rock bands.
Also, we're playing the shorter version of ELP's "Fanfare for the Common Man" adaption in our school band. I play the drums, and it's my favourite song to play.
@ybrik222 Sure, I certainly found KC on the internet, but that's because I was looking for other good prog rock. I think it was on Pandora which *was* a great tool to find good obscure stuff. That's great that your school is more in tune than most and have an appreciation for otherwise unheard music!
@goodolarchie Many kids when they are board go on youtube, and just start searching. I have been listening to King Crimson, Yes, Comus, and many other progressive bands for a few years now, and I am 20. I just saw the label progressive on wikipedia on Pink Floyd, and searched for many other bands, I found to be crazier. If you like creepy folky prog stuff you should checkout Comus, Jan Dukes De Grey, and Spirogyra. Also, I love Van Der Graaf Generator, Magma, Camel, tons of good prog.
@goodolarchie Opeth's lead singer Mikael Akerfeldt, also has many interviews where he tells people about all this bands, and albums in particular that influenced him, and he is always coming up with much other obscure stuff. Bands like Porcupine Tree, also help people to look into the past because they are a modern progressive rock band.
(Opening section) In the Court of the Crimson King (KC) - King Crimson, Tales from Topographic Oceans - Yes, Close to the Edge - Yes, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - Genesis, Photos of Ghosts - PFM, Red - KC, Fragile - Yes, The World Become the World - PFM, Lizard - King Crimson, Selling England by the Pond - Genesis, The Six Wives of Henry VIII - Rick Wakeman, Yessongs - Yes, The Lark's Tongues in Aspic - KC, Foxtrot - Genesis, Starless and Bible Black - KC, In the Wake of the Poseidon - KC
(continue) Caught in the Act - Grand Funk Railroad, One Live Badger - Badger, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway - Genesis, This is the Moody Blues - Moody Blues, The Book of Taliesyn - Deep Purple, Houses of the Holy - Led Zeppelin, Out of Our Hands - Flash, Diamond Dogs - David Bowie
@M400fan If memory serves, that's "Todd", a rather experimental one that was released in '74 or so, following "A Wizard, A True Star". I'll whip it out and play it now, for your listening pleasu.... Ohw...
downloaded it 2 days ago. what a trip. people in the elevator at work were getting a real kick out of it. never could get my M-Audio keyboard to work. this is a real gem. just wish my fingers were smaller.
I'm quite impressed by this. Frankly, some people I know are so attached to that Mellotron sound I anticipate them going out to buy one and having me repair it. Although I love a tech challenge, I probably will tell them about this app!
I have LOVED the mellotron ever since first hearing DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED. This makes me want to ditch my NV2 & go out & get an iPhone, too. Wow! Ain't technology great??!!
how about an Android version, then I would buy it !

When you put all the covers up, I didn't see any Tangerine Dream.
They were very well known for their extensive use of the Mellotron
