  • these three, especially Ed, were the main reason I fell in love with this movie as a child, well, next to Timon and Pumbaa.

  • Always love these kind of sequences :) Thanks for sharing!

  • True story.

It took me about 11-12 years to understand what they meant by "We can eat whatever "lyin" around" As in "Lying".... Lion. I'm so slow. lol. I understood cub sandwich but I never understood why that was so funny.

  • i wish that Disney still did their movies like this with storyboards and stuff

  • 0:10 - HEY WHOA?! Is that a picture of sexual penetration?!

  • Favorite scene, ohyus <33

  • I just realized...Ed is retarded...

  • why do the backgrounds not seem so drawn unlike the characters? It seems like the animated characters are just pasted over the backgrounds or something.

  • @marneebox they are, the backgrounds aren't drawn like the characters, they're painted and the characters are layered over them, it s a MUCH better technique that creates realistic backgrounds and dimensional, z plane movement

  • @marneebox That's how animation works. Don't you think that would be faster and easier than drawing the background hundreds and hundreds of times? Plus it makes the finished project look better, too.

  • haha, i love the variation in styles in the storyboards. It's reassuring to see that different artists on the same production can draw the same characters so differently but still so expressively.

  • classic

  • Pixar is the only reason that Disney is still alive.

  • Hey why does one of the speakers doesnt work.

  • Old Disney: Fun

    New Disney: Piece of Shit...

That also goes to Cartoon Network, Nick (ohh, i miss you soo much invader zim) and etc..

  • @psxworld101 Tangled and the Princess and the Frog are fantastic. Adventure Time is a great CN show too.

  • @cartoonmarc with a few exceptions. Few are ok... but meh.

  • @psxworld101 well what about Pirates Of The Caribbeon? That's an awsome series they made! :/

  • @legendarywerewolf206 I was think more along the lines of what they show on the telly, and not the theaters.

  • @psxworld101 except for Regular Show and Adventure Time.

  • @OhSeamus MAD is what will get cartoon network shut down, which I am ok with.

  • @psxworld101 I agree. Even Stevens and Kym Possible and etc on Disney were great. now the actors suck the newer they get. Wizards is the only watchable one left along with Phineas and Ferb. CN- Ed Edd N Eddy, Dexter..., Scooby Doo(old), Nick- Invader Zim, Jimmy Neutron, Spongebob. i rarely watch these channels for tv anymore since they just arent the same great channels they started out to be. I am really dissapointed in Disney.

  • I cant wait to get to this level.

Would you check out my animations and tell me how its an impossible dream?

  • @callous21 I checked it out. I don't want to discourage you, but at the age of 23 you should get to this level at least when it comes to drawing abilities. You can learn how to animate later on. What I'm trying to say is that if you'd like to become as good as these animators you should do nothing else but train from this minute on, and maybe one day you'll get closer.

  • Fantastic...

  • @anonymous3939 Of course not, but that doesn't stop people from doing it. The majority of shows and movies posted on Youtube are posted without permission.

  • flawless so much flawless ness in this T_T

  • Quick, call Disney and alert their lawyers! Thank goodness there are upstanding people like you in this world who.... Wait a second, your a jackass!

  • omg Mufasa is so BADASS

  • I'da ran back into the pridelands

  • how do disney animators do that? when i animate something the lines always turn out a little wiggly, and theirs are like still!

  • @kairiuxiuxdragon Years of practicing a steady hand and good line art. Also the amount of frames put into a scene or an action. I forgot the frame rate for the movie, I'm gonna assume its 24 fps, but regardless you would need a lot of drawings for it to come out smooth. I just recently saw the movie and you can still see the lines being wiggly. But there were so many drawings done for a certain scene you don't notice.

  • @Brakex It's 24 fps in 12x2

  • Lots of respect for the animators in this age of animation. Even more respect for back when there weren't any computers at all.

  • Stunning, just amazing

  • Wow, I wonder how long this scene took the animators to make. It's stunning :)

  • Testing is the Bitch in animation... yet needs to be done. The patients and the weight on each animators shoulders when working on a project like this is admirable. Bet they wish they had Aftereffects though. Things are easier today. Yet, hardly any studio will risk the money and the time it takes to make true hand drawn features. CG is cheaper and Quicker, considering how fast you can rig + muscle dynamics and mostly everything else can be run through with the program. although that isn't easy.

  • i like the part at 2:55 :)

  • Fantastic.

  • Oh, how I wish I was born like a decade or so earilier! I was born in 1991, even that was too late to be able to work on classics like this becauseI had a few years of growing up to do before I could even start to learn about animation :( Sucks to be born now, haha XD

  • @Melazee01 it's never too late. to be honest, disney needs some good movie soon, because this last decade was pathetic

  • Why can't they go back to the 70s, 80s & 90s?

  • The Lion King: Disney at their finest.

  • see! Disney works incredible hard and most people do not appreciate it AT ALL! pfft to them! lets see them do it any better in less time.

  • some pictures from movie... some not animated drew pictures... but i gotta tell... i could never do such amazing work.... it's awesome :)

  • @Eradictus this video actually shows the different stages that animators go through to make a movie. it takes months for just a few seconds of footage

  • @acmulhern oh ok, i see now, thx 4 explanation

  • @Eradictus no problem :)

  • I LOVE THIS!!!! This gives the movie a whole new perspective. I absolutly respect what the animaters do. When we see the finished film, we either forget or don't relize the time and energy infolved in its creation. This is why I would love it if they would involve this in the DVD releaces. The whole movie in its raw and unfinished form.

  • wow. comparing to todays shit. i mean wow. its like every frame is a work of art.

  • its so beautiful.

  • What happened to Disney??

  • 11 people got pinned

  • 11 people need to be put into the Birdie-Boiler.

  • i want a job doing animated movies how can i do this

  • @TheMOEBUCKS Start learning flash, get into art, and most importantly, start drawing. I'm a Time Arts major so we're currently doing flash animations. Aside from animations, this major can also lead to video game designing.

  • @TheMOEBUCKS go to an animation college, all ye need is a portfolio. thats how i got in. and btw. flash sux trust me.

  • i like watching the raw pencils better.

  • @jokez112

You mean, Old Disney + Pixar = Love. Dreamworks etc *Legerds* Or stupid Question.?

  • I do believe I can see Chris's work (Chris Sanders, the creator of Lilo and Stitch and How to Train your Dragon) in this, especially at 2:29)!

  • @twilightmarauder That's possible, but he did the layout for the song "I just can't wait to be king"

  • I love how the 2D animation looks so smooth it almost looks kinda like 3D animated.

  • @Hniisan Plus the music its just so!

    GAH! Goosebumps all over.

  • hmm i dunno, whddya think ed?

    OOhh ooOOh HHaaha oh (. )_( .)

  • nice

  • HOOOW!... there must be some sort of animation course based in my area of the UK (Leicestershire) that can teach me how to anmaite like this... If so please let me know. It's my dream to work for a comapny like Disney and to be able to draw to this extent. At the minute I'm on an A-level Fine art course, that has life drawing lessons and various other subjects...

  • @crazyfoolo117 best place to learn animation like this in england uk is Bournemouth creative arts - animation production! trust me - its aaaamazing there :3

  • @crazyfoolo117 Sort of late to answer but if your curious about Disney Animation I would suggest the "Drawn to Life" Two volume series written by Walt Stanchfeild.

I have both volumes and I can't even say how many times I have read them. There is such a vast wealth of information in them that actually isn't taught at most animation colleges around the world. You can find them on Amazon or sometimes at a book retailer like Borders (Don't know if thats in the UK)

  • This is fantastic. Animators are amazing, I will never get over how extremely gifted they are.

  • Whoever drew this must have took months, it's a masterpiece

  • @blackxknight Your right must have taken a while, it was worth it. masterpiece

  • I forgot how wonderful Mufasa's voice was

  • @utopiangem And Darth Vaders.... <3 James Earl Jones.

  • <3 I can't wait to do this as my job. This will be a great reference for my school admissions portfolio. The half storyboard half animation.

  • the longer the sequel takes to make the better it will most likely become

  • do you know how they videotaped this? Like when they actual made the animation how did they tape it?

  • @CocoHotpix they do pencil drawings on cels then they record it with a special type of camera that takes it and they photograph each frame onto a camera that splices it onto a film reel. However most people nowadays just scan them into their computers and put it together with software. But traditional 2D animation is done with a special type of camera.

  • this is awesome!

  • Hyenas are actually very beautiful animals

  • this is the kind of animation i like most, its what i grew up with. thats why one of my favorite new disney movies is the princess and the frog, because of the old school like animation. :3

  • Originally during this scene Shenzi and Banzai were going to be arguing about who ate who. This is from the 1993 script:

Banzai: Oh, man! I don't know when the last time was I had lion cubs

Shenzi: Wait-wait-wait! I'm having the lion cubs!

(Simba, Nala and Zazu sneak away)

B: You will not. You can have the bird.

    (Ed notices)

S: Don't you give me the bird!

B: Alright-alright! We'll split the bird! But i get the wings!

S: Oh sure and I get stuck with the bill.

B: Okay, we'll split the bill

  • @blingblinglemon

HAHA, that's a brilliant one! split the bill... lmao :P i wish they'd kept that in. brilliant animation. good ol' TLK, yay classics <3

  • @blingblinglemon The last four lines of that dialogue are why I think Banzai and Shenzi are a cute couple! :D

  • @KrysOfSorrow EEE! ANOTHER PERSON WHO LIKES SHENZIxBANZAI! I'M SOOO HAPPY! THANKS FOR BEING SO AWESOME!!! :D (Sorry, got a little excited there...)

  • EPIC!!!! i wish my work was half as good.... even my finished work is not even to this keyframes level.... ugh...

  • this is what i want to do for a living :)

  • That's animation! And not TV anime.

  • Heh, they look funnyily-cute in storyboard X3

  • I absolutely love when Disney actually puts effort into these 2-D movies... I'd prefer waiting 7 years for a fantastic 2-D movie than 3 weeks for another cruddy Hannah Montana movie... -_-;

  • @Pinknarf95 Yeah but not many people would prefer to owe you 7 years of their life.

  • @navesele Or anyone else, as I have noticed. :P

  • @navesele Serious question, though, why'd it take you so long to respond to my comment? :) (I'm not kidding or being a sarcastic jerk like a lot of Tubers: I genuinely want to know. :D)

  • @navesele Ah I see: sometimes that happens on videos. It's strange. Anywho, at least they're showing the older cartoons of Tom and Jerry on Cartoon Network, but I do understand why the Disney animators would be apt to shift to methods that don't consume as much time as before: things are all about getting everything done and done fast, so I get that. :) I just prefer great 2-D movies over half baked movies any day, because, thinking about how much time they have to put into it, (cont'd next)

  • @Pinknarf95 Well there are people who care about new exciting achievements and the ones who care about making money. Whoever conceived this cartoon's ideas and look cared about creating something great.

  • @navesele Yes, and it really becomes evident in not only the artistry of the animation, but the actual storytelling as well. :) I only regret that more of the second type (i.e. money makers rather than idea creators) are getting much more demographic appeal. :(

  • @navesele (cont'd) it's usually a good story (because they have to make it worth their time. ;) )

  • @Pinknarf95 I can agree to that. Love these old Disney movies ^^

  • @Pinknarf95 lmao too true my friend, disney is kickass

  • i just enjoy seeing pencil tests it shows the animators aren't sloppy idiots just messing around XD and it shows their skill

  • So effing pretty. I love roughs, I love the life in seeing just the lines shifting around- hell, I'd love to see them before the cleanup in more of the shots. Thank you so much for posting, not many of us probably have Laserdisk players to get to watch stellar stuff like this.

  • "Who are you calling Upidstay!?"

One of my favorite lines ever.

I love this- the work that goes into this is just amazing.

  • Pencil tests look really cool : ). You can really appreciate the hard work and just really begin to imagine the long hours the artists spent on this movie. I can draw pretty well, but I can't animate (yet) for crud!

  • Since hand drawn animation is such a time consuming process, about how long does it take to make a cartoon that's hand drawn, such as Arthur or Spongebob?

  • @hedgehogamy300 Well, film is shown at 24 frames per second, so, every second is 24 drawings, making a 30 minute show without commercials, 43200 drawings, and this is assuming they did all the animation on a single layer, which is not the case. So to answer your question, a whole helluva lot.

  • @purpleindicabrownies 24 frames per second??! thats a lot! that must take forever!!

  • I wonder what all the hand drawn animated films would look like if they were fully CGI. That would be interesting.

  • @hedgehogamy300 Cel shaded video games are the perfect example to what 2d animation would look like in 3d

  • The laserdisc version has bonus features?

  • I absolutely adore seeing how animated movies start out, it's so remarkable and amazing!

  • That's awesome, Lion King is one of my top favorite movie

  • it truly is amazing how much work goes into these (this is my fave movie of all time) and i hate how some people want movies and sequels to come out so quick and they dont know how much work is needed and it just gets annoying

  • ya, animation takes more time and money than live action. People wanting sequels etc. so fast is why animated tv shows are so bad in terms of the animation

  • @rockinthepolkadotsox Sequels come out to quickly and they are never as good as the original. They are just made to make money. I wish Disney cared about their films like they did pre 90s

  • I really enjoy lot much more when I watch these Walt Disney movies on pencil test... I can apreciate at first hand the wonderfull job behind each move,,,,

  • Amazing!

  • This is epic. The animation is simply amazing!!!

  • animation films by hand are very hard now days, espically since everything is done by computer but all the oringal animations get tons of agremment on all their hard work plus its alot more cooler to.

  • U should check out the linetests for the new disney movie princess and the frog! There really out of this world, and probably better looking than in color!

  • my 2d animation teacher says the Princess and the Frog is the best Disney movie in like 30 or 40 years (animation wise at least)

  • in terms of story or animation...... because Its not the best story wise.

  • at least beauty and the beast or aladdin have better stories

  • traditional animation is dead mostly because its so much more expensive

  • That simply isn't true, especially when you take into account the cost of decent CG films. Wall-E, for example, had a budget of US$180 million, more expensive than any traditionally animated film in history.

The average price for a Hollywood-style traditional feature is about $60 million. If you knock out the historically anomalous bloated Disney budgets of recent years, that drops to $30 million (including adjustment for inflation).

Good CG can't compete with traditional as far as cost goes!

  • your right that is true

    my mistake

  • I totally agree, I do think that 2D animation puts alot more effort into its work, seeing as everything is done by hand (mostly) and that its alot less expensive, I do wish more animated films could go back into 2D animation, such as the lion king and so many others, thats why I'm raelly excited about the new animated movie The Princes and the Frog, cause its one of disneys first films put back into 2D.

  • Yes, the feel of 2D is AMAZING but what most people don't realize is that 2D and 3D have worked together in a lot of the 2D movies such as Tarzan. It depends on what you mean by 2D.

  • i know, but iam saying like the "Bolt" or "Madagascar" 3D, i prefer the 2D mixed with 3D rather than ALL 3D, sure 3D movies are cool-assaid- but i just prefer 2D/3D way better. But w/e its all good.

  • I'd love to know on what planet do elephants get that big? XD

  • compare the elphant, lion cub and hyeana ;]

  • Old Disney + Pixar = Love. Dreamworks etc just sucks.

  • I agree with you but The Prince of Egypt was great

  • @jokez112 Dreamworks sucked? Since when?

  • @5psi to be fair old 2D Dreamworks was pretty awful - all they did was try and fail to be Disney (with the exception of Road to Eldorado). Now though, they don't try to be anyone but themselves and make great CGI movies.

  • @jokez112 No it doesn't. Shrek and some of there other films are great. Yeah some are crap but just look at Disney these days!

  • @jokez112 yes yes yes yes yes.

  • love the hyenas. hate the lions

  • ok emo...we get it...

  • How is that emo? Hyenas fucking rule

  • yea? is that cuz most ppl hate them and it makes you different and misunderstood if you like them

  • Dude, all animals should get treated equally

  • No, it's cause hyenas are amazing animals. This movie made them look like retards compared to lions, when hyenas are actually more intelligent than lions.

  • umm last i checked its impossible to actually objectively and exactly measure intelligence, especially in animals. they are animals just like lions are animals...you only think of them as more "amazing" because of a bias your subjective emotions put on it...get it...EMOtions...

  • Emo doesn't stand for emotions lol.

And if i was emo, i wouldn't listen to Radiohead, cause Radiohead aint emo.

  • wait wait...it isn't called emo because it is emotional?? you sound pretty confident "lol"...what does emo mean then?

  • Someone told me emo stands for emotive or something like that. It has to do with music.

  • what does emotive mean?

  • then how do scientists figure that dolphins are more "intelligent" then other mammals and animals?

  • ok if there is a huge difference in intelligence u don't even need to be a scientist to see it, but measuring intelligence is DEF not exact enough to for sure that a dolphin is smarter than a chimpanzee or that a lion is smarter than a hyena

  • well depends on what intellegence is defined as.

Scientists use problem solving tasks/game/etc. to figure this

  • rite, without being able to control for a willfull tempermant specific to a particular species among other factors that can fudge results. like i said, intelligence testing is definitely not exact, even in testing our own let alone on an animal that can't communicate with us.

  • It's based on the ratio of their brain mass to their body mass. Dolphins have the second highest brain:body mass ratio after humans.

  • They take the good stuff out man!

  • Aww, I wish they put stuff like this on their new DVD releases instead of crappy games. D:

  • Oh my God

  • lol the storyboard is so cute.

  • they didn't draw this it's in the description box

  • He didn't drew it! This is just from the dvd

  • yea you are right, i was wrong because before to watch this video i was watching others vids that were created by amatheurs....and I thought this video was like the others I had seen ^^'

  • they look ghosts

  • in this scene shinzi sounds gheeto

  • I should have gotten education in cartoon drawing --I would love a career in animation. On the other hand, they don't make enough of these movies anymore. Maybe animators are going jobless these days. I wonder why studios don't maintain animation units like they used to? Cartoons are popular on TV, anyway.

  • because nowadays this kind of animation is more expensive than 3d in terms of time and people involved. with 3d making a 90 minutes animated film requires the half (or less) of people that a classic animation would require, and this means less money to spend. Also, 3d movies are done in less time. so it's all for money, and it sucks cause 3d will never give the feelings and emotions that classic animation gives.

  • yeah "alexav88" this "sucks" really : (

And we have a lot of examples of such bad "new" animation movies. But the lion king is some special movie, and it would be one of the greatest forever.

  • it's my personal all-time favorite. i was 6 when it came out, and it left a great sign on me. 3d movies are so cold, you see a 3d movie and nothing happens inside you. you've just occupied 90 minutes of your life. except for that piece of art named toy story, and recently wall-e
