  • Star Control 2 is a *way* better game than ME.

  • Can we get back to the Frungy championships now?

  • Mass Effect is also influenced by Knights of the Old Republic, Star Trek, Stargate, and a number of other science fiction works.

In particular, the role of Sovereign's ability to "corrupt" its followers was very similar to that of the Star Forge in KotOR, though Sovereign is given a more tangible identity.

The council's history with humans is reminiscent of the Vulcans.

Stargate also has an ancient system of rapid transportation built by an ancient societies.

  • wouldent it be cool if bioware made a stargate game?

  • @swimfeared Wouldn't it be cool if Bioware made a TRUE Starcontrol 3?

  • @Raptoridaner

I dont know how i could miss that Star Forge thing

  • I think that Mass Effect was inspired by Star Control. The Reapers definitely a lot like the Ur-quan Kor Ah.

Mass Effect 2 will even have a fuel system like star control's. Looking forward to it. Tho a ME2 remake would be nice as well.

  • I mean star control 2, not ME2

  • No. Ur-quan Kor Ah and the Reapers are both influenced by H.P Lovecraft's Old ones.

  • cool. thanks for clearing that up.

tho, it is clear after plying mass effect 2, that the game itself seems influenced by star control 2. You know, space travel on the starmap, modding your ship, fighting against an ancient race of insect-people, etc. Tho, star control 2 still does some stuff way better. Like, it has space battles and so on. But ME2 has exploration on foot and so on.

  • Just started playing ME, so I haven't gotten this far and had to pause the video. I'm just glad someone else sees the StarCon influence (SC2 = one of the greatest games of all time). I've noticed influence in other games as well, notably Puzzle Quest Galactrix.

  • Kill the interloper, RIP OUT ITS LIFE!

  • You have spoken the words, and you have spoken them rightly

  • Even if they begin to question, it'd be due to programming that tells them to.

For example, a random number generator does not randomly generate a number, there is a code involved that gives an answer you could theoretically predetermine. The number itself, however, is still random, which is why it is usable for basic applications. The problem is, you hvae to have a really detailed code for a nearly true random number.

You could argue that genes/psychi give humans the same flaw. Eh :).

  • Are the reapers afraid of something that is more dangerous then they are?

  • Yes, they are afraid of the Ur-Quan, which are the supreme evil alien species next to only the Daleks. lol

Seriously tho. I think they know that organic life can exceed them but they know that organics can never be totally annihilated.

  • @sc0pl355

no way humanity could exceed a sentient race of supermachines. think of how EDI is more intelligent and capable than any other human, and cast it in a shell with enough strength to destroy a city or fly interstellar distances :P

  • We do not kill, we cleanse. X_x

  • What if the dinosaurs that we discovered were actually remains of an ancient advanced civilization not unlike the protheans? Reapers wiped them out 65 mil years ago and were next.......

    omg i'm so scared

  • lol, the game you linked has the sickest sound effects :D

  • I'm just wondering why this pinnacle of evolutions needs to exterminate some pitiful organic life every 50,000 years... And how can a MACHINE (complex! synthetic!) say they've always been there and that they weren't built? It's even more crazy than a transcendent God ;)

  • Because they're machines. The very attitude of a machine is to start a task, monitor, and complete. If they didn't allow civilization to start over, they would have run out of a purpose. Just like Smith, The Oracle, and others pointed out about the Machines in The Matrix. We wouldn't understand because we define our choices with reason, they apply logic: Yes or no.

  • that is a very good point. but i thought reason and logic were the same thing.

  • sorry logic was the wrong word. The Reapers apply rationality.

  • okay could you explain what rationality is?

  • Being rational is acting in a predictable manner, yes or no. Having a pattern that always ends with a strait answer. We humans are often categorized as being irrational because reasoning can cause us to act in ways we did not expect.

Reapers are rational. They operate on a pattern and don't believe in the possibility of chance.

  • The reapers seem more like the Dnyarri with their mind control.

  • That's a good point, the appearance is very similar. But unlike the Ur-Quan, the Reapers don't seem to fear the threat of slavery or anything else.
