But i am a newby with fondant and all that..So i really dont get how to make a cake like this are these the steps? 1st make the cake 2nd ice it (could i use any kind of icing like pilsberry icing? or does it have to be like homemade icing?) then let it chill for a while then do the fondant?
mayen...magandang araw saiyo..sabi ko na nga ba magkababayan tayo eh...i've been watching your videos and the only thing that i can say is wow ang galing mo naman...i was inspired by your videos...thanks a lot...i learned a lot from your videos..
I love, love, LOVE your cakes! You are such an inspiration. I have just started dabbling in fondant, and am addicted!!! I love watching your videos, and have gotten so many tips. So, thank you!!! One ques....how did you make the leaves and stems? Do you have a template? So Beautiful!
I used 20 guage craft wires--threaded the crystals -- and bent it to the shape I wanted. I used smaller guage wires to secure the parts where wires cross by winding it up on those parts. remember to leave enough wire to make it stand on the cake
It took me two days-- well, i did not work on it for two days straight since my baby takes up most of my time.. so during his nap and at night--that's when i work on my cakes-- took me couple days to get it done.
i have that book & i love it! you did great! i am definetly not advanced enough to attempt that cake yet, but it's nice to see that someone who teaches themself (like me) to decorate cakes succeed! you're awesome!
This Cake design is awsome.......I just LOVE it, I am looking into making a cake for my Sisters Baby Shower so I am thinking of doing it fondant so hopefully I can pull it off....great job and very artistic.... You must have gotten many many complaments and I am positive your friend Loved it......
The technique i used here was making sure the whole cake is really a perfect square FIRST before I put on the crumb coat or the coat of icing. And after the crumb coat of icing, I did not put a lot of butterceam...so when you use the fondant smoothers -- you need 2-- the ressure will be against the cake and not so much on the icing since it is not a lot . The fondant will follow the cake's shape better with less icing . you can put a lot of filling though.
Another question, how can you get your cakes to be so perfectly square? Sorry for asking so many questions. Do you freeze the cake first? If so, for how long?
Hi Mayen, I haven't purchase a sugracraft gun yet... but I just want to share to some, I learnt and read somewhere... using a cake smoother to make the strand is much easier than rolling them by hand and I learnt from tonedna... just use a pencil or any stick that will serve as your guide to how thick your strands want it to be.
hi. i usually stay within the classic flavors like chocolate, yellow, moccha and marble cake. in cases where i have to carve the cake, i use the pound cake recipe and for regular cakes, it's the regular sponge recipes and they hold up fine against the weight of the fondant.
This is so clasically elegant. I really love the look of it and you're right, that crystal topper is the perfect accent for it. Once again, you've done a beautiful job.
Happy New Year Mayen, thank you so much for all the information you provide and the attention to details in explaining your cake projects. You are the reason I am starting to bake and decorate cakes as a newbie. I will not attempt this without the wonderful help and directions you provide in your videos. I have two questions. Can you use
any other type of glue to attached items to cakes besides tylose, and what type of cake batter do you use? Thank you again for sharing. You are the best!
wow thanks...your comment made me smile ( real wide ) ... now for the tylose glue alternative...i know of only one so far--some 'melt' the fondant with a bit of water--the only downside to this is that the glue dries to that color only. with tylose, it dries clear.
the extruder i used is called a sugarcraft gun-- but any other brand can also give the same result, but it will be a bit harder to squeeze out. but to answer your question -- yup, an extruder was the only thing i used for the stema
for this- i used foamcore boards. three stacks of it glued together and then covered with foil then fondant-- and then ribbon on the side-- made this cake board. store bought ones are foamcore boards too
i used fondant glue or what they also call tylo glue. it is made by mixing tylose powder with water at 1:30 ratio and it should shaken and kept in an airtight container and refrigerated overnight. the next morning, it will be a clear gel. look at aine2's site and she has a tutorial there too
Your hard work has paid off! I haven't tried this, but I was wondering whether the extruder could help with the little balls of fondant. My extruder comes with 3 different size circles (I assume it's the same with yours). If you make a thin string of fondant with the size of your choosing, cut it into very small pieces, turn it onto its cut surface then use your finger to 'form' or flatten it, do you think that would work??
thanks :) i think that could work too... i guess for the look i wanted, id still need many diff random sized smaller balls, so i opted to roll em out one at a time. the border circles here are MUCH easier to do with royal icing. i was just so into it already that i did not have time to make royal icing anymore. but it is definitely easier with royal icing.
thank you! the border is just fondant dots-- but to hide the seam on top of each tier, i used the sugarcraft gun to make the line where the dots are attached to.
It's called a "foamcore" board, costs less than 3 dollars and you can make a couple of big cake boards from that. it's the same one used for the ones we buy too. cover it with either foil --if you intend to cover it with fondant. or the specialized & more sturdy foil made specially for covering cake boards if you wont cover it with fondant.
The 20 guage craft wire was held up by inserting the same 20 guage wire into the bottom part of the letter that touches the cake-- this has to be shaped like a 'hairpin' and you twist it tight to be snug--and stick it on the cake-- it will hold the weight :)
Absolutely GORGEOUS Mayen! I can just imagine the time and patience it took you to create this beautiful cake. But if anyone can, YOU CAN! :) Simply stunning girl! Now get some sleep! Oh, and don't forget to put your beautiful rings back on! Hee hee! :) Once again Mayen, I am completely AMAZED! Great work! One question, how do you get the 20 gauge wire to stay in an upright position with the crystals on them? Talk to you soon!
thanks Laura :) i also forgot to mention-that it doesnt show well in the video -- but the cake was pale pale pink... and it was a nice background and it sets the stage for the dramatic dark brown accents. Thanks again for appreciating the hard work here. you should see my eyebags now haha.
very beautiful great ideas

stubby1203 2 years ago 2
the leaves are the medium sized and the smallest sized cutter from the wilton set... costs less than dollars i think- for the set
the stems- i used a sugacraft gun to squeeze out the fondant in that diameter. you can also use royal icing for that if you want.

Hi there,
I would like to ask you a question. How can you get the square cakes to really look like a very defined square?
I tried but it was a bit of a disaster to get the edges so well defined.
Thank you :)
