That's the way I remember my Ammonium perchlorate blue star mixture whose recipe I have found in Pyrotechnica # I. They were self-propelled and made a good blue color.
I do have some purple flying fish but it really isn't nearly as purple as these stars. I haven't been able to get them to ignite in shells often though and haven't had much luck with experimental primes either. If anyone knows of a good ammonium perchlorate based prime I'd love to have it...
Well it's a new comp I'm working on. The formula is messy because i developed it in the mill and adjusted it every hour or so until i liked it. What i came up with is:
Ammonium perchlorate - 70
Charcoal - 15
Sulfur - 8.5
Copper(II) chloride - 7
Dextrin - 4
The stars were originally meant to be blue, but instead turned out a fairly deep purple with small orange sparks extending 3 inches or so.
I'm firing a shell with those stars tonight, should be interesting if my camera picks them up. I wonder if there is a way for you to synthesize some ammonium perchlorate from maybe ammonium nitrate or another oxidizer you have? I've never tried to find a method.
Those self propellant stars are cute. I think there are lots of uses for that comp. Omg, I wish I could get some ammonium perchlorate, only a little jar ful,

You should make a nice shell out of these... the stars would spread themselves.

They have been in both of my 5" sun and planets shells. They are purple when viewed in the dark.

Yeah, they're interesting stars.
But why just not use thick flying fish fuse (1/4)?

Also, the stars were made by dripping wet comp on wax paper, they ended up like small Hershey's kisses.
